So I'm planning on buying a half stack and from what I've been able to play at my local music store (krank, marshall, mesa, orange) I'm really liking the Dual and Triple Rectifiers but they're damn expensive and if I'm gonna be spending a good 2-3k on an amp I might as well consider an Engl. I can't find one here in Canada to try to out so what would you guys say? I want a fairly versatile amp not just for metal, I like to play some jazz and clean shit every now and then.

Any suggestions?

right now in my current living situation having an amp isn't practical, so I roll with digital modelling (pod/vamp)

You ever played an ENGL?

Out of all the amps I've actually tried, I would recommend a Peavey JSX... Amp is SMOKIN! I've never tried an ENGL, VHT, Bogner, Diezel or Framus first hand though, so I can't give a real opinion... Lots of great sounds have come from Rectifiers though, but if I had to choose between an ENGL and a Mesa without ever trying either of them, I probably would go ENGL... Probably a Blackmore.

Try a JSX though, brand new they can be had between $1200-1400 and they are fucking awesome.

i'd go engle because they are cheaper than Mesa here.

I got to play a Blackmore once... fucking AMAZING amp, I just wish it had separate EQ's for the distorted and clean channels :( they share the same EQ, so you have to find a setting that will work for both unfortunately...

Spawn of Possession use Mesa's. They have amazing tone on their recordings. One plus about the their amps.

Alright well since I'm basically never gonna get to play one here until Engl's become more popular and start showing up which would you guys recommend? I've heard great things about the powerball but also heard that the noise gates aren't that good? But what the fuck do I know...help me out.

I always found the guitar tone to be way too thin for my liking.

I have owned a dual rectifier and currently own a powerball. Engl ftw!! But I have heard some awesome tones from a mesa. But engl seems so far superior.

ontopic: engl

(yeah i've tried mesa's and engls, and heard lots of clips and other players. i've heard sweet ass tones from mesa's on records, but never out of an actual amp. too flat for my taste)

Fuck I need to get to Europe and test all the Engl's out haha
I really am worried about buying something I've never played, especially if its gonna cost be a good 2000.

But I'll trust you all and get the powerball probably..

Cosmo Music in Richmond hill (just north of Toronto) carries ENGL, I don't know what they regularly stock though or where you're from in Ontario...

I have a powerball, and love it to death. I ordered it without ever playing a ENGL and have no regrets. I tried out so many mesa's and while they are good amps, I'd never take one over my ENGL.

Brampton man...and shit really? I had no idea, I'll stop by whenever I get the chance I NEED to try one of those babies out. Thanks.

I am a proud owner of an ENGL SE. Best amp I've ever tried, and absolutely worth every penny. I was lucky enough to get to try my guitar teacher's out first hand and was hooked since. I wound up buying his off him for a fraction of the new cost. Basically, it can handle any tone you throw at it. I'd recommend an ENGL if you can afford it for sure.

I would take a powerball over a dual or triple rec. just cause the powerball sounds good no matter what you do with it. it's for noobs that can't EQ for shit. the dual and triple rec sound fuzzy as fuck and the cleans suck. Save up and get a Mesa Roadster. It owns the fuck out of any ENGL on the market. Yeah I said it. Fuck the ENGL bandwagon.

Despite me having never played an Engl, I'd go with the aforementioned. Never been a fan of Mesa tbh.

I am a mesa guy, and ever since I bought my mesa half stack i have never been able to find another amp that gets the same power behind it, i play in standard tuning and most other amps cant get the same low end without tuning down, im not saying no amp can, i just havnt play it yet, i am still searching to find something i like better

plus a mesa dual recto has been used to record some of your favorite records, so you cant go wrong
