I've noticed (and unfortunately been involved with) a lot of fighting on these forums as of recently, and I just wanted to divert the hate to something more constructive. Since there's no been no news from camp Cryptopsy for almost a month, I figured I would just like to start a topic about one of my favorite new bands.
Holy shit, why haven't I heard these guys before! They are fucking amazing. Mick has a knack for creating these grindy black metal passages that are totally unique, at least to my experience. And V.I.T.R.I.O.L. has one of the most incredible voices in extreme metal today, he has definitely been inducted into my top ten extreme metal vocalists, thanks to his inhuman performance on "Hell is Empty and all the Devils are Here", their new masterpiece of an album. I seriously feel uneasy just listening to that album, it is fucking unsettling, violent and just raw as all hell. Listen to "Der Holle Rache Kocht In Meinem Herzen" at about the 1:14 mark, that is barely human!
Do any of you guys know of any bands like this that mix black metal with grind? I really don't listen to much black metal, so the only guess I have is maybe Impaled Nazarene, but that is just a guess. Either way, "Hell..." is my top album of 2007. I bow to those two crazy UK fuckers on this one, job well done!

I'll get flamed for this I'm sure, I've heard their name before but I've never actually listened to them. But thanks to this post I'm going to pick up that album.

I like them now and then, but their songs start to get too formulaic. Their first album is definately their most brutal. It's just a shame that they rely so much on the screaming verse, operatic chorus formula. Don't forget, though, they also have an industrial metal influence as well with the drum machine, vocal distortion, and electronic samples (more evident on their first album than later releases.) I do have to agree, though, that the vocals and basic riffs are pretty killer.
As far as black metal goes, though, I prefer first wave and Norwegian second wave stuff primarily. Bathory, Sodom, Celtic Frost, Kreator, Darkthrone, Immortal, Burzum, Emperor, Satyricon, Mayhem, old Ulver, Enslaved, etc. Not to say that I don't like newer stuff from other areas of the world, but I haven't felt compelled to seek it out because I can get my fix off most the albums of the aforementioned. There haven't been too many major innovations to black metal that didn't cause it to completely stray from the genre. I am kind of interested in Shining and Grand Belial's Key, though, just haven't been in a black metal collecting mood lately.
On a side note. I really hope Lord Worm resurfaces with some black metal studio project like he said in that Gauntlet interview before he quit Cryptopsy.

I think one of the reasons I enjoy Anaal Nathrakh so much is because I listen to virtually no black metal, so it was something totally different to hear these guys. It was fresh and new, and it still is. I have a hard time getting excited over death metal sometimes because I listen to it so much, but experiencing AN for the first time blew me away. Cryptopsy did the same thing with the song Slit Your Guts, just bowled me over because it was the first death metal song I ever heard.
Specifically about AN, I haven't heard enough of their material for it to seem very formulaic, just the one album, which is still kicking my ass. But your right, they do have a very strict verse/chorus structure. It's just so full of hate, and those industrial and electronic bits are intergrated so well. It's been an experience for me.

Yeah, see I've heard all of their first four albums, not the new one yet, though. Their first album actually has no clean vocals and the songs are less linear, not exactly multi-faceted, more like an amalgamation of electronica/industrial and raw black metal song structures - which basically means lots of hypnotic repetition. I can appreciate the rawness and outright rage of their songs. I especially liked the numerous guest appearances by Attila on their third album. It's just that I got tired of them quick because their songs started to get predictable.
And if you're just getting in to black metal may I suggest you immediately try out some Bathory, (early) Darkthrone, and Immortal. Sure it's cliche, but you can't beat the original masters. Alot of the songs on Bathory's Blood Fire Death have that level of rage that you'd probably enjoy.

Aha!
OK - I have heard these chaps before, I thought they were not too bad.
A brutal blend of Napalm Death and Dimmu Borgir...Indeed, the song you
recommend is a belter of a track.
I think I will pick the CD up soon.

Dimmu Borgir? I don't hear any Dimmu influence. The black metal element sounds far closer to a mix of early Emperor, early Burzum, and middle-era Mayhem.

Well, that is what sprung to mind to my ear.
The clean singing put me in mind of Vortex...Whatever.
It is brutal and I like it, that is all I have to know...!
Let's not start a new flamefest over minor points, eh?

Oh no, not my intention at all. I'm just commenting that I hear no Dimmu. The singing rather reminds me of Ihsahns singing on early Emperor stuff. The high pitched screams remind me of of a mix of Ihsahn, Quorthon, and Varg and the lower growls and weird voices are obviously inspired by Attila.

The cleans have always sounded much more Emperor-y to me too. Has that dark, elegiac elegance.

I wouldn't disagree that Anaal Nathrakh's Black Metal clean vocal influence
owes much to a whole slew of elder greats of the Norwegian scene...

Elegaic elegance, that's good. Describes the sound, and nice use of alliteration. Those cleans were what drew me in at first.
Just putting this out there, because I don't want it to happen but it's probably inevitable, if cleans can work in a band as extreme AN, why can't they work with Cryptopsy? Probably because their singer isn't Dave Cunt.

I imagine that "Hell is Empty, and the Devil's are Here" is probably quoted from somebody. Most of their lyrical themes are based on philosophers and writers.

The Tempest by Shakespeare, Act I, some sailor dude is talking about how fierce the tempest is, and he says something to the effect of "Surely Hell is empty and all the devils are here", making the waves rough and whatnot. Just a little literature lesson.

ah, I remember reading that on wikipedia or something. I haven't read or seen the Tempest unfortunately. I do know that "Bellum Omnium Contra Omnes" is from Hobbes and there are a ton of Nietzsche references in their songs.

Pestapokalypse VI is a fine slab of choice brutality...
I reckon Anaal Nathrakh are a different vibe.
All a matter of taste, anyway.

I've had Submission is for the Weak on my computer for a few years. It's not a bad song, but I just don't feel like it really stands out as a particularly good song.
Belphegor's material is great. I saw the video for Lucifer Incestus and thought it was too cheesy for my tastes, though. It's terrible. lol

what black metal video isnt cheesy?
i could care less about videos seriously, i think a real good video wouldnt even have shots of the band playing insturments, it would be filled with zombies raping women and dead babies being eaten by zombies
but hey thats just me ;o

I agree VN. Look at the mainstream rap videos, it's all the video and no talent. I don't really like music videos. I like live videos but I'd rather imagine when reading lyrics and such.
