I am not exactly sure what they do. I think they boost the ultra low frequencies and boost and delay the extreme high frequencies. Either way, I personally like the sound it gives to my amp. Although, I haven't tried it in a full band situation. It could be the complete opposite there.

it's just another type of eq basically. I don't like them anymore cause of the "scooped mids" it added to my tone. The reason why I regret buying it isn't cause of the sound (I liked it at first), I just don't see the point in having 2 of them. I suppose it would be cool if the other guitar player used the other side of it, but if not then what's the point? It's a useless channel and I should have just gotten the old ones where it was just one and $100 cheaper.

I like the sonic maximizer. I got it for less than $100 so I figured what the hell. It cleans up the sound a bit IMO and does add low end, but on the 2120 I add more to the mids. I'm personally liking the sound I'm getting out of it. I'll see how it sounds recorded next week. So far it has sounded great for me live. For now I'm keeping it. As time goes on and I mess with different sounds and amps and what not it may leave my setup.

Mind you I'm still learning the ins and outs of the 2120 (and settling on a tone I like, which changes often) and I'm no where near advanced with guitar/guitar rigs like you and some others on here. Feedback will of course be appreciated.

Oh gotcha, though I hardly ever play standing up anyways haha. Hows the access to the upper frets? I know with the Kelly and Warrior bodies, sometimes the horn thing tends to get in the way when trying to play up around 22-24 frets. How about the Deactivators? I have a 7-string version in my Universe, but don't really know how I feel about it...

actually, i find it much easier playing on the upper frets. the body doesnt get in the way at all, infact makes room IMO.

goddamn that must be over $10,000 worth of gear, haha.
what's this volume knob "mod" you speak of? did you just get rid of it?
Sounds about right for all the guitars, work I've done to them, and equipment/rig.
The guitars alone, going by price I paid for them at the time and mods/pickups comes to about $4000. (I only paid $600 for the Gibson when it was new back in '91)
Everything I listed for my rig/equipment (including various tubes and cables) I've paid about $6500 for. But I got a couple things at a discounted prices or bought them used. If I had paid full price for everything listed I would have probably paid close to $8500 (something like that). So my guesstimated total that I've spent is around $10,500 for everything listed there.
The volume knob "mod" I do is to relocate the volume knob where the tone knob is. I use about 2 dollars worth of supplies from home depot to plug the hole where the volume knob was. It's very easy, cheap, and effective. Looks good too.
ChAAPY
01-07-2008, 02:07 AM
but why did you get rid of the tone knob? I often here people say, "you don't need it in death metal" but I kind of beg to differ. The tone knob adds a lot to your sound so I just don't get it.
M.Gilbert
01-07-2008, 02:24 AM
For playing death metal rhythm sections I have no use for it. When playing other styles, or cleans or leads, the tone knob is very useful. But the tone knob doesn't add to your sound, it gives you the ability to take away high end from your sound (I know I'm stating the obvious). What I think you meant is that it gives you more versatility in the sounds you can achieve, which is true. But I have patches dialed in specifically to do the exact same thing.
So for my mainly "metal" guitars, I do this mod primarily for comfort and so there are no accidental volume knob changes, knowing that I still have the ability to lower my high end for certain things when needed via my presets on my preamp/fx units. Or even via CC pedal controlling either a parametric eq, or filter, etc.

WARLOCK, RG5720, RR1, RG550FM
- The Warlock has EMG's (85 bridge, 81 neck... yep that way round courtesy of Ryan on here)
all the rest of my guitars have Dimarzio's now, but not in the above picture
- RG5720 has a viper neck (2mm wider than a PGM model) and Dimarzio's:
EVO 2 bridge, HS-2, Eric Johnson Custom neck
- The RR1 has a Steve's Special bridge and a FRED in the neck...
- RG550FM has a Double Whammy in the bridge which is a fucking great pickup... like a Tone Zone but without all the bass, HUGE mids and really vocal, HS-2 in the middle and an Al Di Meola neck pickup which, again is by far my favorite neck pickup i've ever played.
I also have a Frankenstrat, which is shown here in it's old form with an old ESP George Lynch neck which twisted on me, so I bought a mighty mite strat neck... great choice!
http://photos-b.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v71/108/93/551480256/n551480256_341869_3378.jpg
And I also have acquired various Superstats, I do them up and sell them on...
At the moment I have a Maison (cost me Ģ30) a Gibson Superstrat thing with the WEIRDEST floyd rose i've ever seen on it (Ģ60) and two old Ibanez's.
Effects wise I use a Phase 90, a DD-6 delay and a Budda wah...
and of course an ISP Decimator.

Or even via CC pedal controlling either a parametric eq, or filter, etc.
so you not having a tone knob.. = me just turning my tone knob down all the way?
usually makes everything sound like garbage. :|

The opposite. Not having a tone knob wired up is the same as having a tone knob turned all the way UP not down. The tone pot only removes high end when turned down, it doesn't add high end when turned up.

yeah the caparison is really cool, imo. Quality throughout, heavier than most, but I like it that way. Neck wouldn't suit Ibanez freaks - it's a bit thicker than that.
The standard pickups rule.
Only thing I don't like is the odd location of the cable input, but you soon get used to it.

I have no probably at all with heavier guitars, especially since I know that they won't have a thin sound. How would you compare it to say a Jackson neck? I'm really used to my RR1 neck, but anything close would do.
-Gibson SG Cherry Faded serial 02994635 w/ EMG 81 in bridge, stock in neck
-Emerald Green RG450 Korean w/ stock pickups and maple fretboard, currently in the shop
-A V-Amp 2 (with a currently broke-ass power supply that doesn't even fucking work)
And that's it.

Dude, go down and play an Ibanez PGM model neck, they're pretty much Capirison territory. Jackson wise, sort of, but a little less flat... more of a C backshape than the Jackson/Ibanez D

Damn, looks like someone dropped some major cash "two days ago".
Cool to see someone else with an Invader (I have the Invader 100). How do you like that Invader 150? Does it have good tones for death metal? I was told by Derek as Rock Solid Amps not to get the 150 because the 100 had better tone for death metal. So I'm curious what you have to say about the 150.
That ENGL cab looks really small to me. How do you like it?
stuh84
04-27-2008, 08:08 PM
Good tones for death metal? In absolute spades. This thing absolutely decimates for death metal. The only reason I think people are saying get the Invader 100 instead is because of how its easier to get to power tube saturation.
However, I'm not just a death metaller, I'm a progger just as much as I'm into death metal, so I want that clear tone you can only get when the power tubes aren't burning up, so this fits the bill for me better than the Invader 100 would.
Saying that though, I've not had chance to A/B them, but the Invader 150 nailed the EXACT tone that was in my head, not even close to it, it was absolutely spot on what I always heard when I was composing, so I had to get it (been waiting since November to get it :()
Now I just gotta get a couple more things and I'm all done for my live and recording rig. The bits to complete it are a MIDI controlled looper/signal router for pedals, rack, power conditioner, tuner, and new floorboard. Tonally, theres nothing else I could want. I just want to make the rig exactly as it should be for live use, the one click and everything changes route, not a touch of tap dancing.
Edit: Sorry, didn't reply about the cab part. Look small? I dunno, it doesn't to me, you using Vader cabs by any chance? In terms of sound though, huge. Its tight, smooth yet punchy, great highs, bright but not harsh or brittle, and this thing, if you set the amp for it (i.e. badly), you can kill people with bass. However, I aint the kind to overtake the bassists job, so my depth control on the amp is set to 0, most it goes to is 2 :)

Cool man, you're the only other person on these forums that I know of with an Invader head, so I had to ask what you thought of the 150. Yeah I'm pretty much just a death metal dude, and the 100 is prefect for me.
Yeah, I use the Invader 100 with two 4x12 Vader cabs. I just looked at mine and they are about 1.5" wider (on each side) than my Invader head. Perhaps they are considered oversized or something.
I've also got a HUSH Super C, which I'm going to eventually sell to be replaced by a Decimator rack unit. And I'm still on the waiting list (for 6 months now) for a Fractal Audio Axe-Fx Ultra. I also have the Behringer FCB1010 foot controller. Guitars are Jackson SL1 and Ibanez S-Series.

I don't know of many people with the Invader 150 full stop, every forum I go on, everyones always saying the Invader 100 is better, but I know of none who have played both.
The Vaders are definitely oversized, I've seen pics of them compared to most cabs and they are huge compared. I still would like to get hold of one someday, but with no UK dealer, I'm a bit out of luck, and I don't have the space at this present time for one anyway :(
I've not tried the Decimator rack, but the pedal is mindblowingly good, so I can only imagine the rack version being even better.

Given that this projects way better than the Mesa cab I had with V30s, I'm going to have to call false on that one. Set your mids insanely low and have too much gain and maybe that is the case, given that the classic mid-hump of the V30s takes care of that. I dislike V30s because of that mid hump
However, I aint scared of mids, I crank them, and dont have loads of gain, therefore this cab fits what I need already.

sure in the practice the v60 sounds great but get up live, you'll get drowned out by everything but the crowd.

I have a mate who uses the almost exact same rig as me, only difference is he uses an Invader 100. His tone absolutely kills and can be heard everywhere in the room.
I'm not doubting your experience per se, just that if this projects better than a cab I already had, and played live with, and had to turn it down below the rest of the bands levels so they could be heard, I fail to see how this isn't going to project.

We are definitely going for different sounds then, because I hate Marshalls with a passion :emot-LOL:, even their cabs I find lacking for the tone I want.
Different strokes though, their cabs dont work for you, whereas they decimate for what I go for :)

I love it. It has a lot less gain than I was expecting, but it still has more than enough for any application. I was expecting it to be like my 5150 where anything past 6 is an unusable amount of gain haha... It's a different sort of saturation though, it sounds very clean no matter how much gain you add, you never get that sort of sizzle that you get with most amps. Sort of sounds like how I'd expect a VHT to sound. Next time I'm home I'm going to make some clips of all 3 amps with the same guitar/cab/mic setup for you guys to check out.

I'll update with pictures when I get back in town, but right now, my live rig consists of:
-SUNN Model T Head
-SUNN Model T 4x12 cab
*runs in tandem with*
-6505 2x12 Combo
-brand new, yet-to-be-gigged Avatar 2x12 cab
-2004 Gibson Les Paul Standard, Desert Burst
-Jackson DKMG w/ PAF Pro/ToneZone combo (the "afterburner" booster on this guitar is SO badass with those pickups...)
-2004 Ibanez S series. Plain as it gets, walnut finish. Dual EMG 81's.
(all tuned to a dropped A#, with 13-56 D'Addario strings)
-BOSS TU-2 tuner
-BOSS PS-5 pitch shifter (original signal to SUNN, harmonies go to the Peavey. of course, the signal goes to both amps when the pedal is not engaged. sounds pretty fucking massive!)
-BOSS PS-2 shifter/delay (just a little bit of delay in my SUNN's loop. stays on the whole time. very subtle.)
-Ibanez Tubescreamer (gives the SUNN a little boost here and there)
Those pedals run in front of my amp (sans the PS-2), in the order I listed them.
I have a lot of other miscellaneous gear that I don't currently use live, so I won't include any of it in my "rig".

But for my level, I felt it was the right move. My intonation is much better now, I can actually play without my ears getting raped.

Is there any specific reason you're switching from Vader cabs to ENGL? I'm still not sure which of the two I want....
And how does that boss noise suppressor work for the SE? I'm getting a Savage (which doesn't have a built in noise gate) so I was thinking about getting a rack decimator, but I don't know if that's overkill...

Careful with keeping your external HDD on top of the speakers man. Speakers emit a magnetic field, which could easily corrupt your files on that drive. I assume with the metal casing it has been just fine, but I thought I should give a heads up anyway.

I'm thinking about getting an ENGL Powerball or a Mesa Boogie Roadster. Both are in the same price range. Which would do brutal death better? Or is there another amp I should be considering instead?

The manufacturer is Status. I'm still thinking if I should go for it or wait for a 5/6 stringer.. Oh well, I dont really have any use for extra strings right now, so I think I'll go for it anyways.

last rehearsal I ran my 2203 and my Powerball at the same time and JESUS do they work well together. The Marshall's full, open midrange bark with the ENGL's tight, focused midrange and low end make for rather compelling playing.

Yeah I had it custom made by Castle Cases (www.castlecases.co.uk) in the UK. Highly recommend them, extremely good service, and the case is an absolute tank.
Of course, it's top-heavy with the amp in the top, but it's far easier to adjust setting. When they're the other way up I always imagine someone kicking in the front of the amp by mistake..

I don't exactly play DM, more tech-y groovy stuff. It's a very cool cab though, really thick and dark, but amazingly clear and tight at the same time. Can't see any reason why it wouldn't rule for DM, but by the sounds of it, Vader cabs are the way to go for DM.

You're right. I still have a little 10w peavy practice amp....sounds pretty much the same as the ENGL Savage I have now. I usually go with the Peavy live because it just sounds so much better...I just have the ENGL in case I need to prove my worthiness to others.

I would say it does help me play a little better, but I'm also looking it as a hobby, as collecting & investing.
If I wouldnt use my cash on instruments, I'd probably blow them on munchies and alcohol etc.
These things wont lose their value during the years, opposite of that and I also got to play them :emot-part
