gay thread, but I'm pretty bored. anyone have a favorite time signature they like to mess around with or a particular scale(s)? I'm pretty fond of 5/4 right now and 7/8. 7/8 is such a mindfuck though for me right now. 11/8 over 4/4 polyrhymeters (meshuggah ftw), and 7/8 over 4/4 are awesome too. scales -harmonic minor usually in the key of A, major, whole tone, diminished, too fucking many. Also, anyone else just pick up the guitar sometimes and just play random notes and let your fingers do what they want with no preconceived thought(s) of what your going to do the next bar or note? that can result in some cool stuff IMO.

I don't use scales to write music, at least not intentionally. I don't know, some of our stuff is in 9/8, 6/8, and 7/8, can do some pretty cool stuff with those sigs.

do you have any riffs in your new tunes that have riffs in those signature that are longer than a couple of bars? I don't remeber the tabs too well from what you sent me, but I think you use some of those sigs as quick fills before you go into another riff. which I think is pretty cool. it's common, but it works nicely when done well. you guys nail it perfect on a lot of parts.

In song 1 (if you've got the tab still) there's a good section of 6/8 towards the beginning. Use it instead of 3/4 because the notes are grouped in 3's instead of 2, 2, 2. I find myself using that more often because of the grouping of the notes, for example the most recent song I'm writing I have a couple of sections of 12/8 (could just be 6/4) because of the division of the notes, also experimenting with a couple of 9/8 grooves that are sounding really good.

Packard Goose is in 17/16, and part of keep it greasy is in 19/16. That shit is nothing though compared to some of the stuff he does with polyrhythms.

I was just listening to keep it greasy, it goes from 19/16 to 21/16 in the song. Vinnie Colaiuta rules.

Cool thread. I'm quite fond of using middle eastern scales, chromatic, and the half whole diminished scale.
My fav time sig is probably 5/8. Like 6/8 a lot as well. Hell, I'm partial towards 8th notes in general :p

I wrote a riff entirely in 15/8 doesnt feel or sound very odd though.

because thats 5 groups of 3. 3/8 6/8 9/8 12/8 etc. ends up sounding pretty normal if you set it up right

i only know a few scales but im starting to focus on modes moreso anyway. cant say i really have a favorite as i can make up nice stuff in any key, though i guess i tend to use minor ones the most. As far as time signatures, id say like 6/4 is pretty cool. I tend to switch TS a lot when playing

Man, how do people pick up these time signatures from songs by ear? Any tips?

Tap along to the beat. If it's a tricky time sig you might have to listen to it again and count.

this is a pretty horrible thread, lol... it kind of goes against my whole philosophy of music writing, but if I had to be a dork and name a favorite scale... the Hirajoshi scale. it's a Japanese pentatonic scale, but only in the name sense of having five notes, it doesn't follow the standard pentatonic intervals - it's just a minor scale with a note or two taken out. i just love the mood it creates.

My favorite types of these are simple, really. I love the sound of a minor chord and I love playing 16th note triplets on a minor chord in 4/4 time.

I'm not so sure about that notation. It doesn't add up. Especially the last line. a quarter note triplet, half note plus another quarter note triplet does not equal 4:51. At all. Now that I look at the second line 5's cannot equal 3 's at the same tempo. There must be a lot of tempo changes in that piece or something. But at that point who cares that triplets in one tempo = 5's in another tempo. All music is that way. Can someone explain that to me? I've read a lot of crazy polyrhythmic pieces (Cage, Delecluse etc) and I can't even understand that section.
My fav time sig right now is 15.
15/8, 15/4, 15/6 - - they are all the same to me. I like that you can give it a 5 feel, or a 3 feel. Or both.
My fav scale is harmonic minor but I'm a drummer so I don't even use it that much. The good ol blues scale is fun too. That's what I resort to when I play guitar.
