i have that BOSS metal zone pedal. i really dig the amount of crunch for riffs and lower stuff, but whenever i solo, especially when there;s a lot of picking, there's a shit load of excess noise. and no, its not because i let other strings ring out. what pedals do you all use?

I use the metal zone too when I'm playing guitar.

Have you tried it with a different amp or with a different guitar (different pickups). The amp or the pickups could be part of your problem.

Or just get an amp with a good distortion channel.

I use the Uber Metal pedal by line 6. I know that their stuff maybe not be that great to some people but I love this pedal. I use the Pulverize distortion setting and it totally crushes. But then again I believe that every pedal is going to sound different with different amp setups. The solos cut through pretty well.

umm i have a prs custom 22 (pricy, i know). i know this isnt the standard metal guitar, but imo its low end is a shit load thicker than any of the metal guitars ive used. im planning to get a bigger amp soon, being that i have a Kustom 2x12. it has celestion speakers, not sure what exact model. its a friggin solid combo amp for 300$. but yah, my price range for a half stack is around 700, any suggestions? and today i also turned the actual distortion setting on my pedal down and it helped a lot.

well, if you use too much distortion, it gets noisy of course.

every tried a noise supressor? boss ns or isp decimator.

as for 700 - try to get a used one! why does it have to be a half stack? :)

Metal zone is good for quicky thick rhythm tone, but it really wasn't made with leads in mind.

People playing PRS Custom 22's through Metalzone pedals? Jesus Christ...

Honestly, with stuff like V-Amps around for $100, there's no excuse to be using something like a metalzone, period.

well, a good combo. half stacks arent automatically better than combos.
a good combo ist still better than some shitty halfstack.
as for 700...you need a good head and a good cab; will be hard to get something really good in this price range (but well yeah, you can search for used stuff - thats another story).

true true. i really like my combo as it is, but i figured gigs would require a half stack

I used this before switching over to just rack effects. I used to use the Boss Metalzone and I prefer the Line 6 over it. The Boss pedal was too damn noisy.

Unless that person happens to like pedals and the tone from them. I don't get it either, but a lot of people swear by these Boss pedals.

Well, if you're going to go this route... the Ubermetal is DEFINITELY the superior of the two.

Im using a gibson flying v with EMG's, put through a Boss NS-2 Noise Surpressor, into an MXR Dime Distortion with the Gain at just less than half, into my amp with more gain put through it and fiddled with my EQ, i have a Pig Destroyer-ish tone :) Awesome

ya, well i used to play clean, jazz guitar with like a spanish classical twist, so when i got the pedal i was a n00b. i'll look into this v-amp, as well as the ubermetal

If you only want metal distortion, and nothing else (pretty much) then the Uber-metal is great, it handles leads well too, but the V-amp/POD/similar will be a lot more versatile. I don't know about the pricing in your area, but over here the Uber-metal is around the same price as a V-amp anyway.

On the half stack thing, have you checked whether your combo can run a quad? I haven't used many Kustom amps, but a lot of other brands will have an extra speaker out that you could run a quad with (assuming that you're happy with the current sound) so you wouldn't need to buy a head immediately to get the bigger sound.
