Any of you cats ever make hiphop/triphop beats? It's definitely a departure from the Death Metal/Fusion that seems to dominate this board but it's fun as fuck to make and good background music when it's looped.

I made some crappy simple hip-hop loops with Renoise for someone I know, and it's really easy, but fun nonetheless. As fun and easy as making crappy trance songs that everyone love, haha.Even if I hate hip-hop, some beat makers are pretty good, and really under-rated.Why the hell is the singer getting all the praise?
I love Renoise, but I'm bored of it.I guess I'll get motivated with the upcoming beatbattle though.

Plenty of producers get a ton of credit (even if they're not that great). Just look at someone like Timbaland.
Anyway, listen to stuff produced by Stoupe the Enemy of Mankind, Dan The Automator, El-P, RZA, Blockhead, Aesop Rock, Blue Sky Black Death, Madlib, Prince Paul, Ant, etc. for examples of how amazing it can be.
Not hip hop, but Amon Tobin has a lot of great stuff too.

I just made a beat with guitar intro to Meshuggah - Stengah. Sadly, it sounds like Korn.

I had a program called jayjay hip hop maker or something like that. Was pretty easy to use, it had even virtual turntables =) I imported all sorts of soundsamples from tv, news, history channels and put some beats underneath. Great fun, but that was years ago.

I used to make a lot of beats that were hip hop ish. They were a bit darker than most of the commercial stuff but it had that feel for sure. I even thought about trying to make some money making rap beats. Not hip hop but rap, like 3-6 or Bun-B or E-40. It was a lot harder than I thought it would be. I know some music theory so when I hear those beats I think "piece of cake". Then I sit down to make a beat and it comes out lifeless and dull. Even if my "riff" is great and by beat is good it was still missing something. So I gave up and went back to practicing single strokes and odd time signatures. :grn1:
