John Patitucci, Matthew Garrison, Janek Gwizdala, Dominique diPiaza, Steve Disgiorgio, Victor motherfucking Wooten, ALEX WEBSTER, Eric Langlois, Francois Mongrain, Steve Cloutier, Les Claypool, Bootsy Collins, Jeff Berlin, the list is fucking huge.

Stephan Fimmers - Inspired me to really pursue four finger picking.
Derek Boyer - I love his tone, and just watching him play. In my opinion he's one of the most stylish musicians out there. The way he plays the bass vertically half the time and down low. I saw Suffocation the other night and half of the entire show I was just watching him.

Come on dudes, wheres the love for Dominic "Forrest" Lapointe!? The guy is a wizard on bass, easily the best i've ever seen. My other favorites include, but aren't limited to: Stephan Fimmers, Alex Webster, Erlend Casperson, Derek Boyer, Rainer Landfermann, Jaco Pastorius, Francois Mongrain, Steve Digiorgio, Sean Malone, CLIFF BURTON, ChaotH, and Murray Fitzpatrick.
edit: bassed (pun intended?!) on the videos ive seen, i really want to add Mikey Flores to this list, but untill I can actually hear him he will have to remain an honorable mention. Hopefully the new Origin cd will change this.

Harris is the man. Listen to Killers and realize that album is from 1981. That was something totally new and diferent. Harris is one bassist who managed to develop his own style. There is not a lot of bassists who did that...

What dictates how an instrument should or should not be played? Even better, Who is qualified to dictate this? One should just play the instrument how they like to, experiment when they want, come up with good music and have that be that.

WHAT you play should be the only deciding factor. Holding a guitar like it's a gigantic phallus is just a sad show for kids who think it looks "Sick".
And to Phoncible, every instrument has to stand it's test of time to be considered even remotely respectable as a lead instrument. I mean, the electric bass itself wasn't even respected as an instrument worthy of Jazz until the 70's. You cannot judge a musician based upon his instrument's expected role, only his technique, musicality and uniqueness. And judging by that criteria this mother has some credit.

I do. Think of how many people Jaco got to noodle with solo/lead bass and now look at how many people are covered by major publications that do the same thing. In 10 years the amount of bass-centered music will be stupidly greater than it is now. With guys out there like Adam Nitti and Vic and Claypool and whatnot kids will always have the incentive to be the biggest and the best and none of them will think that just playing a walking like will make them such.
Phoncible
11-27-2007, 09:09 PM
most music today is bass-centered (that is, not centered around soloing on a bass guitar, but bass-centered). and yes, there's tons of kids today who want to be vic or nitti or whoever.
i just said what i was thinking when i saw that vid. yes i absolutely think upper register-play on the bass has its place in music, but in general i think its better beeing creative within your element than trying to make it something else. what i like best about wooten is his basslines, not his wankery!
