I have a Dean EVO short scale strung piccolo and it's a fun little guitar. If you want a full scale I'd go with the Ibanez SR300DX or an OLP MM...Keep an eye out on Ebay. If you are looking into a 5 string get one with humbuckers, I've never been keen on a low B's tone through single coils. Besides that, don't fall for any gay selling points like 35" scale or fancy woods, you get what you pay for and playability is key.
Also - Dean Edges are some nice instruments, you can pick those up for cheap.

I havent really noticed this, although ive only played a few in my day. i absolutely love the neck on my f-204, so slim and fast. Im a big fan of the 35" scale length too and dont really see it as a "gay selling point". Its actually really effective when tuning down, as most basses ive played with the standard 34" length get way more buzzy and clanky when going down even just a half step. Of course this can be ratified with a proper set up, but the 35" scale length allows for tuning down that little bit more without the necessity of a full set up.

I guess I've just never been a fan, my B has always sounded nice with a 34 but whenever I noodle on a 35 the high C is too taught and it makes tapping and slapping too hard.
Realize I play with .28-.120 so I like some slack.
Edit - I had an LTD C-305 and it was definitely a nice bass, Neck-Through, EMG-HZ, beautiful finish and the only drawbacks was the neck's finish. It was a nicely shaped neck,...but the overfinishing made it sticky and slow. The 35" thing is totally my preference, the strings just don't budge on em.
