This thread is for advices for beginners who want to buy an instrument. So share some knowledge about the do's and don'ts. I guess one would be play the instrument before buying it :emot-blin Anyway I want to start some bass playing and thought about this one http://www.deanguitars.com/bnds_v1/edge_9.htm

Dean quality has taken a huge shit as of late, everything is made in China now. Best affordable bass I've ever played was a Warwick Rockbass, check those out!

I bought my first electric guitar 3 years ago along with a small marshall practice amp for someghing around 500 bucks.

It plays decently for the price even (i guess?) and is supposedly some kind of an ibanez replica, in fact i think the lower end ibanez guitars are made in the same factory in korea. the trem is pretty much a piece of shite but other than that i think its decent for a beginner.
Edit: btw how do i get that image to show up in the thread insted of just the url? i clicked the insert image thing and put the url between [IMG] syntax

The fretless squire P-Bass actually has a very good feel and sound, and I think it's only about 200 dollars.

YES!!! Warwick Rockbass FTW!
But, also, my uncle has this Korean Ibanez bass, it's a black fretless... an SR-400 Fretless, I believe. I think it must have been a fluke for some reason, a special case of a factory pumping out an instrument far above the abysmal QA standards of these korean factories, but that's one of the most comfortable, best playing basses I've ever touched. That thing made me fall in love with fretlesses!
http://www.datemusica.net/tienda/images/uploads/SR400BK.jpg just like that, except fretless... You can probably scoop one up on ebay for $300 or so.

I cant stand Rockbasses... they look so cheap with that chrome hardware. I could never play one without feeling extremely lame knowing its not a real Warwick.
so? not everyone can drop a G on a bass, yo...

Yeah, I know, but thats the thing, you dont have to. Most Ibanez's are better than those rockbasses and still cheaper. Take that one you posted for example. Thats a great bass, and like u said, can be found really cheap. And besides, when it comes to Warwick, its not about dropping a G on a bass, its about dropping 4 or 5..:emot-fail we can all dream

The resale value on warwicks is ridiculously low, so you can buy them used for pretty cheap.
Here's a random ebay search:

A bass that's 2,200 new for 950 used.

i was about to say that there is nothing better than ebay for most musical purchases. with some patience - the regular player in is will find a great deal on great gear.
(the exception in my mind is boutique, collectors, etc...)

I've never liked the idea of buying guitars/instruments online as I like to play a guitar before I buy it, make sure it feels comfortable to me etc. I'd hate to buy a guitar and then find out when it arrives that the neck profile doesn't sit in my hand nicely or something...

I've never actually bought an instrument online, but to save 1,000+ dollars I definately would.
