View Full Version : The "listen to my recordings" thread

So...since there are a few people here who are into homerecording, I think a thread in which everyone can post his own recordings to get some helpful feedback, is a good idea.
And even people who aren´t recording anything can help people with just listening to the stuff - everyone in here can tell if something sounds good/bad/etc. on his/her soundsystem.
So, of course I opened this thread because I got something I want you guys to listen to:
http://www.file-upload.net/download-477818/phase01mixsample02-05.mp3.html
I doubt that a lot of you will like the music, but that doesn´t matter.
Just want to know what it sounds like on your audio system and if you can hear anything really negative...I mean like an instrument is too loud or the whole mix is too "bassy" or whatever...just tell me!
Thanks already and of course post your stuff as well!

On all the fast parts to be honest, try to get more intervalles between the hits on the cymbals (that's how you call it in English right?). For example: Instread of 3 hits a second, try 2.
Besides that, it will sound nice with vocals and a real drummer I think, so it's good.

the drums sound way too thin (mainly the snare). you did more eqing and compression in EZDrummer didn't you? the kick is a bit "clicky" for my taste but it's not that bad. I like the reverb or whatever effect you on your vocals though, sounds very different. guitars are very clear and distinguishable for the most part.

Does anyone here use Line6 equipment?
I'm going to buy a Toneport UX2 next week, but just wanted to know how people like it, what their experiences are with Line6.
I've heard some good things about it, and it looked/sounded good when my cousin demonstrated it to me, so I'm gonna buy the line6 anyway..and it's pretty cheap, hehe.
Just wanted to know how you like it, if anyone here uses this kind of home-recording equipment.

www.myspace.com/celestialashes it's my band, bloodrage is the only song that was recorded here, the others are live recordings, no vocals yet and one backing guitar isn't there but I think it's ok, I am the singer and I have to record our demo because we're all out of money :D
So drums were recorded at a friend's house, but they had to mix the volume and so on before recording because they were only able to record one stereotrack because it's only a 2 channel interface, next recording will be done with a multichannel interface so the drums will be more brutal, I think mic wise they used 7 mics and the only one I know is a Shure SM57 on the snare.
For guitars it's ESP M-II through Digitech 2101 with a POD Xt as Speaker Simulation, bass is Di and than through Guitar Rig 2 (sounded better than Ampeg SVX) 15 per cent are DI Signal, 45 very clean scooped sound and 40 per cent were very ballsy with distortion on it and so on, but in the end the whole recording should sound a bit bassier, so I have to re adjust the Multiband Comp (I am using Cubase SX3 and the C3 Multiband Comp in it).
We will upload a few other songs in the next few weeks and I will record vocals, too, some songs are totally different, more like Visceral Bleeding or stuff like that, many different styles because they were written through the past 2 years and we all became better musicians in that time (especially bass player and guitar player).
Hope you like it and forget that really boring long post!

Hi!
I´m using the Toneport ux2 as wel...it´s really nice, since its an extern soundcard and lets you record guitar/bass + vocals easily.
Didn´t use the gearbox software for my last recording (which I somehow regret)...if you upgrade it with all model packs then its modelling-wise the same as a pod, just with more inputs etc. ...has phantom power of course (vocals/2 xlr inputs).
by the way...if you didn´t already read it on the other forums...I posted a track a while ago. Now here is the finished version (CD version...mastered - not by me ;) ).

ruonitb - sounds cool, but still raw mix-ish, generally to thin and dry drums and vox to far in the back (i kinda dig the idea of reverberating it like that, but needs more definition imo)
pwnsauce: some sweet playing indeed, and decent guitar tone. if only the other stuff were sounding as sweet, hehe. i like best the parts where the entire "band" plays more things together, like 1:38, could very well be elaborated!
abu: i absolutely dig it! would love to hear it properly recorded, too many good ideas beeing lost in gp forever
i'll post a bit of the latest stuff i've been working on for myself. my dm-thingy, just a sketch, so dont care too much about the playing or the sound, rather the composition and drums (having a hard time making them fit without sounding stupid on this song). vox are so far without lyrics, just to try out a bit of placement and such, and bass is just too out alot of the time, i found out i need to relearn the song before making basslines, haha.

Pick any you'd like to listen to. I has no singer yet, the song I'd like critiqued is Hot Flying Lettuce. So if you'd please listen/judge that one, I'd enjoy it =D
BTW: That's the instrumental version, the other version I'm working on has many fun lyrics, this is them:
Man I love this cold and snowy day. I don’t have to drive, I don’t have to work, and school’s canceled. Maybe today I’ll chronologically order my CD’s again. Or maybe I’ll take a piss in the snow on my porch and spell out curse words. Or maybe I’ll record a song about hot flying lettuce.
The snow that falls, it hurts my toes
Yet in my legs, the pain still grows
I have a remedy if our mommy will let us.
That would be a piece of steaming hot lettuce.
Throw the lettuce, watch it fly.
Burn a patch into the sky.
Each burning drop of lettuce dew.
Will bring about an end to you.
Your slow fiery death with 3rd degree burns.
Will make you screech as the world still turns.
Your death will be forgotten
Your friends, they will not care,
Your significant other will find a new lover,
And you will be hung to dry, by your hair.
Burning produce burns the skin
Swelling, Bursting, Popping, Pussing
Exploding from within.
You pray for death as the lettuce melts your face.
Your family laughs at you, you damn disgrace
HOT
FLYING
LETTUCE
HOT
FLYING
LETTUCE
HOT
FLYING
LETTUCE
HOT
FLYING
LETTUCE
Your burning body quakes in Pain
Twisted and Broken, existence in vain
As you skin melts off you pray to be slain
Hot burning lettuce leaves you suffering
HOT
FLYING
LETTUCE
HOT
BURNING
LETTUCE
HOT
FLYING
LETTUCE
HOT
BURNING
LETTUCE
The death it comes to help you cope.
The lettuce has robbed you of all hope.
The lettuce falls off of your face.
Then lands in an unmentionable place.
HOT
BURNING

first time I´m using it on a song though!
yeah, I use the toneport...I mainly use compressors and EQ for the tone.
fir this sweep picking shit I used a different pick-up to get this "computer" sound. ;)

Chapter I solo test mix was recorded with my friend's headset while there were tons of people in the room so it's not a very good recording at all. Better Days is the newest recording I've made and the others are kind of old, but they're decent. I used a mic from the dollar store to record the guitars and FL for synths (except I used only guitars on Gardens of Stone) and drums (DFH samples, of course).
I recently bought an SM57 and I just ordered a mic preamp for it, so I'll probably be recording and uploading some of my new stuff pretty soon.
Edit: Also, I'll be using Addictive Drums in the future.

i'm just really not a fan of the whole "beneath the massacre" diminished masturbation licks phenomenon thing, and being erlend doesn't give you a get out of jail free card in that respect! some riffs were very good; those few reminded me of a shallow and pedantic record called psalms of the moribund ;)
Erland
02-15-2008, 05:25 PM
I don`t like BTM myself , but i can see some of it being somewhat similiar, though I think the arrangement flows alot better. at least in my head, and when it`s recorded later, instead of having to deal with generic midi. I can`t even make out the riffs on psalms cause of the production, so doing rip offs on my part would be hard. but hey, they`re the shit nowadays, so I guess it`s a hit.
out jail for free card? I don`t think I`ve ever posted stuff earlier that I myself can entirely say I`ve made. So all in all I can`t take credit for any of the music I`ve put on cd`s over the years , and thusly if you think it sucks, it hasn`t been myfault. so far.

hehe ofcourse. Music is a totally objective thing, so if someone doesn`t like it that`s fine. Totally understood... I see that all the time, hard work and dedication put into a piece of music or album... Like Defeated Sanity's "Psalms of The Moribund" for example.. the hard work and sweat they put into that album, only for some people to say "I hate it because of the production" Pretty shitty deal if you ask me.

Just some little ideads I head a few days ago, bad drum programming, I am not really good at it, just used some samples from Chimaira's Resurrection and a few others I found, the second one has also a bass track, very sloppy played, used ampeg svx for the sound. Just used a standard multiband compression preset and a limiter for "mastering".
First one are 4 guitar tracks (Charvel Model A direct into the PC, than different plugins) 2 more distorted ones R100 and L100 panned (-6db) and 2 less distorted with many mids R80 and L80 panned (-10db).
http://www.2shared.com/file/3095587/70b86ab9/riffs.html?
2 guitar tracks, Digitech 2101 directly into the pc, no cabinet simulation, did that with Voxengo Boogex and some nice impulses (Engl V30 Cabinet) panned L100 and R100 (-5db).

A recent mix I finished from that prog rock band. Music probably isn't something you guys are into, but advice on the mix would be appreciated.

sounds good man. I can hear all the instruments perfectly and the cymbals aren't super bright/or any other noticeable frequency issues.
the only thing I find lacking is the kick drum. for that style, it sounds a bit too muffled IMO and it pretty overpowering. sometimes it sounds like the file has some very soft clipping at times but that could be a number of different variables that might have nothing to do with your actual mix (ie, my soundcard or monitors)
regardless, great job!

Thanks for listening man, I appreciate the advice as well. That was the final version for my school project, but things aren't quite ready for their release. I will consider replacing the kick drum, since it doesn't seem to be working. It is overpowering, but I felt, and the band did too, that the kick drum really needs to drive the song. Perhaps it's too loud, though.
There isn't any clipping going on, since I mastered it using an adaptive limiter, and the ceiling was set to -0.2 dB. It's a precise tool, so I am not sure what is happening. Maybe let me know the time code for when that happens and I'll see what is going on. The snare transients might be pushing the limiter a little hard.
Thanks again.

Wow! I guess I shouldn't be so surprised by the amazing talent on this board. I wish I could work on my music as hard as you guys do.
Our myspace has a handful of recordings. One or two of them are studio recordings, a couple are live tracks, and the others were done with a ZOOM multi-effects pedal and Acoustica Beatcraft (very badass program, IMO). We're not quite an "extreme" form of metal... A little more old school...

Since there`s really not a whole lot going on here, I`d like to share my latest creation. My drumming`s really not dynamic at all, so it`s sounds like a bunch of riffs just tossed together without coherency. Experience tells me these things are sorted out with a real drummer at rehearsel when time is due.

I`m supposed to read for my law exam, but I find excuses to do anything else, so I made another song. quarter of a song, to be more precise.

That first one is pretty insane. You should try and record it someday. Have fun nailing those sixteenth note triplets at 200bpm.

Actually it`s pretty brainless up and down wholetone scale stuff tapped. it just sounds alot more brutal in midi when all the notes have the exact same punch. kinda like triggered drums :) we`re working on the song ( http://www.sendspace.com/file/5q92wp ) i posted on the previous page now and it`s coming along nicely, so i think this is the new direction for The Allseeing I musically these days. With a decent production it could come off quite nicely.

Listened to it last night, forgot to mention it. The concept is cool , but you need to work on your timing, your way off the beat at some spots there. still, creative stuff going on.
