Do any of you bassplayers use effects? If so, what kind of effects do you use and why do you use effects?

I personally don't use effects. I like the sound from my bass as it is.

IMO I don't think you need effects as long as you have a decent rig. They are fun to play around with though.
@Vriend - what bass/gear do you have?

I have a Warwick streamer stage

The only effect I ever use is a bit of compression and thats pretty standard in the bass world. Flanger, chorus, delay, all that stuff is useless apart from just tooling around, imo.

compression can be handy sometimes.
i enjoy using a equalizer and that's it.

I`m not a bass player but it depends for what kind of music your playing. Death Metal doesn`t really need effects because it`s so tight and all about accuracy there really isn`t a whole lot of room for effects on bass.

when playing death metal do you guys use distortion? i saw that alex webster video and his bass was active and didn't seem to need any distortion because of the hot sound, i usually just use the knobs and shit on my svt3 pro

From my experience using distortion on bass for death metal just makes everything that much more muddy. I think the old bassist of Cephalic Carnage used to use distortion with his bass. point in case.

I would sooner use an overdrive pedal as opposed to distortion.

Yes, but I also love the Fender sound.
I want a Fender >:[

The only Fender I have ever liked was an old jazz from the late 60's. My friend wouldn't part with it but he did let me use it for a gig once.

Another effect I do like to use from time to time is the fretless simulator on my zoom506II... Its not that great though, really all it does is make me wish I had a real fretless bass. :emot-LOL:

My bass player is a nut man. He plays a 7 string(Conklin). Also just started learning stick, plays sitar, standup, plays a fretless 4 string. Just started learning death metal and can hit 16ths at 220. He is in school to be a concert bassoonist.

Auto-panners are good when you are playing fast slap/tap stuff.

One of my best friends is an amazing bassist. He plays in an all instrumental metal/jazzy bad that is out of this world. He uses several pedals. They are all boss stomp pedals. He uses a tuner, bass OD, digital reverb, delay, & a flanger. Makes some out of this world sounds with that shit. Another effect I've seen used is a Mooger Fooger pedal, cant remember which one though.

Auto Panner ? Fretless simulator sounds cool as hell. I was actually wondering if they made those when I read this thread. Cool.

I used to run a load of effects, Octave, Distortion, Wah, Chorus and a few EQ's. But I started slimming down my pedal board, sold all my pedals off except my distortion and bought a dbx 166xl compressor/gate when I moved to a rack setup. Now all I use is an Ibanez PD7 pedal in front of my amp that I leave on all the time, and the dbx 166 between my pre and power amp.

lotsa distortion in one of the bands i'm playing. can do much with the sound, adding just a bit too. i'd also like to have an eq and compressor (or multiband compressor) to nail the sounds i'd like, but i do use those in my pod, so.. i reckon you can make most basses sit decently with most metal bands with the right use of effects and eq

What's an autopanner and how does it make slapping sound better?

Listen to the song A Show of Hands by Victor Wooten and you'll hear some Auto-panner action.

I dislike this whole bass Cult of Personality that has spawned up around ERB players. More strings doesn't mean more talent. That being said I do play 6 string only to allow for more room to stretch. 4 strings are confining but Jean Baudins 12's are just a little much, he should have just picked up a Warr or a Stick.

I don`t have a vid of him. I`ll try and get him to do one. He does a pretty sick 8 finger version of arabesque.

SansAmp.

Not really effects. But sick. After going through like 4 bass amps in the last 2 years, our bassist has been reduced to using our Carvin PA head for an amp, until he gets the cash to buy a friend's bad ass Ampeg.

But anyway, the SansAmp makes a shitty PA sound like a real bass amp. Can't wait to hear what it does with a real rig.

makes it sound like a shitty pa? :D

I use a Line 6 Bass POD and do use some distortion/effects. I like a full, thick sound, filling in the voids when the guitars break into their harmonies and shit. That is just me, i always dug Shanes sound, so i always liked the distorted bass sound.
