hard to believe this came out in 1988. discuss this masterpiece of an album. "To Live Is To Die" has got to be one of the best songs I've ever heard.

I think Master Of Puppets has more classic songs, but a big "fuck yeah" to this album as well!

that would be my fave of theirs, but they're all legendary, up until justice, after that, they get worse as they go

Truth...and does anyone else think the self-titled is at least decent? It's definitely not legendary but I still find myself spinning it from time to time mostly for the catchiness factor.

i was one of those people that didn't like the black album when it came out because it was a pretty drastic departure for them, but i definitely dig it now. some awesome songs on there

I remember when I got Master of Puppets in like 87, and they kept talking about this new album that was coming. I bought it(Justice) at Von's grocery store the week it came out(1988?), I lived for that shit when I was a little kid... bikes, skateboards and metal! Anyway, I remember that the guitar tone was so heavy and bassy it sounded like my stereo was fucked up... I'd never heard a guitar sound like that before that point. What an absolutely amazing album, and for me, definitely a life changer! To Live is To Die is probably my favorite track, but every track crushes on this album!!!

I never bought this album so I didn't really get into it much. I loved Ride The Lightning and Master Of Puppets though. Haven't listened to either in a few years.

yup, without doubt the first four were the pinnacle, after that descending in quality. The guitar tone is so fucking heavy on this album that one can imagine what it could have sounded WITH bass. Mindbogglingly heavy.

nah it's a classic man. commercial yes. but still it has the best production out of all the Metallica albums and James' best vocal performance. the radio did kill that album a bit for me since the singles got played so much.
and Justice has Kirks best solos. he SHREDS on this album.

Great album and their career best. It's also the only Metallica album I listen to completely, as there's not a weak song on the entire record. Hell, I think I'll listen to it right now. Too bad they've done nothing but embarass themselves since this :emot-fail .

Yeah 'Justice' rules incredibly hard, but 'Sad but true' was the first metal song I ever heard (thus getting me into heavy music) so I gotta give the black album major props for that. I also enjoy some of the stuff from load and reload. Not on the same level as the first 4 albums obviously, but still... there are some good songs on those albums (IMO).

I'd say at the time it was one of the most technical thrash albums, for sure. The main thing though is not the technicality of the album... its the composition, all those great riffs were put together so well!

truth. but do you know any Metallica fan who likes that album? every Metallica fan I've talked to hates that record (rightfully so, it's fucking horrible) but I seriously haven't come across one person who likes it.
it truly is a shame what a disgrace this band has become. fuck any band that sues their fans.

I can't take any album over any album (well, out of the first 4 anyway).
I simply cannot find myself liking one that much over another. They all fuckin' rule! I have come to the conclusion of late Kill 'Em All has a few not so awesome angles, but the other 3 are all fuckin' supreme and whilst I have preferences at certain times they are ever changing.

All my Metallica CDs were stolen out of my car many years ago. So I don't get to hear them much. But last night I was cleaning out a room in my basement, and came across an old Ride The Lightning cassette tape. I put it in and it would barely play, it was all slow. But I was still into it. After a couple plays through it started to play at normal speed. I must have rocked out to it like 10 times through last night - it was awesome.

I cannot begin to express how much the first four albums mean to me. ...And Justice For All is probably the best metal album ever made.
For you gear heads, this is what Hetfield used to get that insane tone on Justice.
Mesa Boogie Mark IIc+
Mesa Boogie Quad Preamp
Marshall JMP/JCM Heads
Roland JC120 Combo
Marshall 4x12
Mesa Boogie 4x12
Mesa Boogie Heads slaved into Marshalls
Talking about Jason's bass being obscured on ...AND JUSTICE FOR ALL: "Also, my tone on JUSTICE was very scooped-all lows and highs with very little mid-range. When my rhythm parts were placed in the mix, my guitar sound ate up all the lower frequencies. Jason and I were always battling for the same space in the mix." Guitar World, October 1991
James Hetfield has three Gibson Explorers and a Jackson (the "Kill Bon Jovi" guitar featured on the cover)[Jackson King V], all without whammy bars. Like Kirk, he opts for Mesa Boogie amps. "When my Marshall got ripped off, I couldn't find a new one that was as happening as the old one, and I wanted to try something different because everyone was playing Marshalls. I went to the Boogie factory, plugged in, and said, 'Yeah, this shit is pretty happening.' I use Marshall cabinets though." James uses no effects-just an Aphex parametric EQ and an A/B switch, "Clean and Crunch." He strings up with Ernie Balls, gauged .010-.046.
"The whole album is doubled all the way through, if not tripled. I double pretty much everything, just to get it a little thicker. Live, we both play the riff all the time, unless it's the intro or Kirk's solo. There are three part harmonies, and they're all doubled. On 'To Live Is To Die,' there are plenty, plenty guitars going-maybe 15, counting the acoustic tracks.
We wanted to combine the big sound of MASTER OF PUPPETS with the rawness of the GARAGE DAYS EP, but now that I hear it, I think it's a little too dry. It's really in your face, but it could have had more guts to it, somehow. It could have been heavier sounding. We spent five days getting the guitar sounds, but I think I like the guitar sound of PUPPETS a little better.
We had mics everywhere. I had a full stack, but side-by-side. I had mikes up close, at 45-degree angles on the sides, some crossed farther away, and some way far out that were useless."
Commenting on downpicking:
"That's the key. They key! Downpicking! It's tighter-sounding and a lot chunkier. Guitar Player, April 1989

I like the tone on Ride The Lightning more than And Justice For All...I think they're essentially the same thing, but the tone on Ride The Lightning was recorded/mixed a little bit differently...It sounds a bit warmer and without the overload of low end in the chugs.
