Hey. This question is mostly for Scott. I was wondering how you write the guitar lines. do you pick up your guitar and start jamming and come up with ideas? Is there any format that all the songs go by or do you just piece riffs together to sound good.

Any info about your writing would be great

I usually write a handful of riffs that I believe together can be in a song. Then I typically would write some sort of intro riff or two that goes well with the first set of riffs. Then from there I'll start putting these together to start forming the song structure. Once I have some structure in place, I'll build off of it with more riffs until the song is complete. Then I'll play the song over and over again seeing if there are any parts that should be changed or if I need to insert a new riff here or there. Once the song is completely done, I show it to the rest of the band.

you rely on scales or any other theory stuff when writing? or is it done by heart?

Most of the riffs on Dissecting The Angels were written in various keys of Diminished or Harmonic Minor scales. And the remaining riffs were not written in any scale, just came up with stuff that I thought sounds good. But theory/scales always came into play when transitioning from riff to riff.

On our upcoming release Anatomize, I'd say it pretty much follows the same use of theory and scales. Except on this one, there is less use of scales within the actual riffs, and more of just what I thought sounded good. At times riffs may be in scale for a few notes, jump out of scale for a few, and then back in. Stuff like that.
