Personally I can't fucking wait, and from what (little) I have seen of Gil Sharone, I can't wait to hear him tear that shit up!

I am very excited :emot-LOL: .

Gil looks awesome but I'm kinda meh on the new album since Pennie isn't involved. I'm sure it'll be great but I'm concerned that it won't do what every Dillinger album does when it's released and instantly becomes my new favorite album. Dillinger has always been that solid rock of musicians and now the backbone of the band isn't there. =[

I haven't really seen what he's capable of, though I like Stolen Babies. People I know who have seen him live or drum themselves say that he's a way better drummer...but who knows if he can actually write. We'll see I guess.

This is true. Who knows how much of Pennie's stuff was actually used though. I hear the dude is an awesome player but who knows. Just have to wait.

Just watching those clips of the new shit on You Tube is fuckin' terrifying! I can't wait to hear those new songs fully, with or without Chris. I think Ben will still be laying down those twisted Psychotic Metal riffs like there's no tomorrow, and I'm damn sure they ain't gonna pick a shit dummer to execute the songs. Gil Sharone looks fucking wild on those clips... really slamming the shit out the kit, but still annihilating those ambidextrous kaleidoscopic grooves that we all know and love from DEP.

Sure, it's always disheartening when a band member leaves, but I can't help but feel it's for the best. If Chris' heart was no longer in it, what's the point of him wasting the bands time & his own? I sure as hell don't want to see DEP split either. There's a shitload of unfinished business there & I wish them all the best.

Can't wait to see these gents tear up the UK with Meshuggah later this year...:emot-blin

Yeah, if his heart isn't in it, then it's for the best. At what point is it still "DEP" though?

They've had a ton of lineup changes already though, and they manage to get better and better, so I'll be positive. :)

True but regardless of the line up changes it's been stated dozens of times that Ben and Chris have been the primary writers since day one. Without Chris, who knows where that'll go. I'm just glad they had this album written before all of this took place.

I personally think it will be very different, but then again, there isnt ONE Dillinger Escape Plan where the don't try something new or overcome adversity.

Calculating Infinity - Im about 90% sure I read in an article a long time ago that they had lineup changes prior to this actual release. They were really one of the only "mathcore" bands of the time and had to sell their stuff without a supporting cast for the genre.

Irony is A Dead Scene - They had Patton do vocals in the absence of Dmitri and wrote one of their longest songs (and one of their best in my opinion).

Miss Machine - They tried just about everything musically, had a new singer, a new label, and they had a member break an arm on tour. They also wrote this album in segments that were very far apart, and still made it fit well.

If any band can just laugh in the face of adversity and continue to come with something fresh and intriguing every single time, it is DEP. No worries.

yeah, the last bassist got paralysed from a car accident before they started writting CI. The guy helped to write the parts and Ben played them, from what i remember. They basicly never had the same line up for each of their cd, 'xcept maybe S/T and the EP before CI. It's just that no member with a role as big as Pėnnie left before.

I bet Ben does more writing, because its a lot harder to write a strangely timed riff to a strangely timed drum beat than it is to write a odd time sig drum to a riff.

Hmmm... I bet the album will be good in some aspect.

Granted I loved Miss Machine but Chris' drumming on it wasn't super spectacular and kind of kept it from achieving it's full potential. It was like some of the parts he did were just to boring compared to the vocals and/or guitar.

Sure he could play fast odd meter swing tempo but it really became stagnant after awhile. He really was a one trick pony in some aspects.

As for the new drummer (Gil?) the video's impressed me to an extent. His drumming was a fresh breath of air to the Dillinger sound, but we heard a drum solo and him playing to a few riffs? I can't wait to see and hear the new lineup... OCTOBER 7th!!! Hope they play a new song or two.

man i think it's the album after ire works we oughta be worried about.. this one was mainly written while chris was still in the band. sure gil kicks the shit out of those drums, but that's not the point..

although i still think ben is the main dude so no real worries then.

ok, Gil sounds awesome, but let's not get crazy now because we don't like the fact that Pennie left. He was awesome, and however good a drummer may be, Chris had such a strong personal playing style that I can't think of any band whose drummer would be more difficult to be replaced. However good the new drummer is, he must be able to find a way to play his songs live, take all the weird orchestration and without changing the feel of the song, find a way not to sound like he's just copying Chris' playing. Tough job, or toughest job?

I think Ben will be perfectly capable of writing songs even on his own.

i heard a chunk of the album... there is NOTHING to worry about. It slays

Miss Machine is my favorite so far (i can't judge this one yet)

but this one made me laugh the way that Calculating Infinity did the first time I heard it ( and i mean laughing in a good "this is ridiculous" kind of way)

I'm not worried about Gil, he's fucking shit hot, will be interesting to see what he does and no doubt it will add to the overall sound. I mean even if he's not better, it'll be different which will be interesting at least.

One guitar, Converge have one guitar currently, as did Botch, Coalesce, Pig Destroyer... there is no way I am worried about that.

I didn't feel Miss Machine as much as I did CI, but I can appreciate it was new ground for them, most of it was good and solid, Unretrofied made me cringe, as did some of the more Patton/NIN-esque vocals, electronic parts were good.

I have faith the new album will be killer though, line-up changes and pressure is good for bands, stops them from getting lazy.

um. DEP has always really been the ben weinman project.

there are countless drummers that are more skilled and can bring equal drum licks to the table, if not better.

gil is one such drummer.

DEP has never been amazing specifically because of the drums. The drums in DEP were amazing, but they werent the star of the show.

A new(better) drummer isnt going to change how awesome this band is, except for the better.

Did Ben really write the drum parts? I would never have guessed that, and I find it pretty remarkable.

yarnboy
10-14-2007, 02:38 AM
Ben and Chris had a sort of Fred and Tomas (Meshuggah) relationship as I understand it. Meaning Ben's parts a lot of times "wrote the drums" by nature. For instance, alot of the staccato riffs on CI where Chris is basically mirroring the guitar with his hits/accents such as the part right when the vocals kick in on Sugar. I mean I assume most of you guys have heard Ben's solo stuff. He is a supremely drum oriented dude.
