we just lost power here for a few hours. and not just residential areas. its been over 90 and humid for a few days and i guess a bunch of transformers blew, like 15,000 without power for a while
all of downtown was pitch black , people were getting in car accidents left and right, etc. im just wondering if this happens in europe or its a problem with american grids? its pretty damn common here especially during the summer

We get power cuts sometime when there's been a storm... It'll only happen to half a street usually.

our downtown is basically one long road, and the side i work on lost power while the other side maintained. however, eventually it all went dark
my retribution cd is still in the cd player at work :(

national grid actually pulled the plug to prevent more severe unintentional blackouts.

I can imagine there's a few areas in NY you wouldn't want to be in a black out. Actually, you probably wouldn't want to be in some of those areas at all.

Europeans always lose power. I think it's due to the fact they have too many power metal bands in any one vicinity at a time.

happens in australia a bit, usually during heavy wind

We had no power for 24hours down here just last week. It rained and there were some badass winds for about 48hours prior and during.

Yes we're having problems with power , especially in the south of italy ( Sicily )
this is due to the massive usage of the air conditioner. we have problems also with water.

Power cuts make you realise how much we rely on electricity for pretty much everything.

hrm so mixed results. i imagine there are places in our country that dont have the problem much.
after that huge blackout in new york (state wide!) i think there was talk of fixing our grid but nothing ever got done to my knowledge. in fact, its getting worse
i think it's probably more to due with the residential layout being so distinctly different in America than it is in most places in Europe.
European street layouts are far more sporadic and semi-chaotic than the distinctly grid-shaped more-'organised' layout of American cities, which to my logic would mean that there's a subtle yet distinct difference between the way in which a city distributes it's power in the US than it does in Europe.
Plus I dare say the average American city size is bigger than that of the average European one bar say certain capital cities.
Butyeah, long answer to say we only really lose power if at all when there's been a really bad storm with like nigh-on 100mph winds/ torrential rain and shit.
Never anything in summer, and even when there's been a hefty storm it's not always a guarantee of a power cut.
