Yea, I can't stand that shit. As a bassist, I don't even like slapping, because it's usually just a show off tactic. If you want to impress me, play off the musicians or environment around you in a complimentary, creative manner.

^^ if you're talking about pure chops, then I sincerely believe you speak the truth (I think there are a SELECT few with better phrasing... one of whom being Allan Holdsworth!!). NO one was is or ever will be as gifted with the instrument as he was.

Amen. Shawn Lane was just absolutely insane at whatever playing style he tried on guitar, and his phrasing was always just ridiculous. Definitely sucks he's gone now.:emot-fail

I've never understood so i'm just going to ask. What the fuck does that mean when a guitarist has good chops? I've always assumed it had to do with his sense of rhythm but i wish to assume no longer.

"Chops" doesn’t really mean speed or how cleanly you play.
When you talk about chops it is referring to how much skill & ability you possess to play & know several different scales and patterns & the ability to play said scales & patterns with different rhythmatic interval counting. Of course speed & how clean you play add to your chops.

Anybody have Shawn Lane's "Power licks and solos" book or video?
All I can find is this transcription of "Not Again" done by Guthrie Govan.

My only advice would be to widen your Vibrato, but besides that you pretty much have all of the other techniques down.

Eww...that had absolutely no structure, and it was sloppy. Try checking out a real guitarist like Synester Gates. I know he's got some lessons on here, and they are the best lessons you will ever find. Synester is the best out there right now.

these guys are amazing. my friend showed me there live dvd and it's some of the most amazing stuff. they do a lot of classic metal cover like metallica and pantera and maiden, but they also have there own material which is amazing too.
by the way all of it is cello besides the drums obviously no guitars in the backround or anything,
