Mustang311 had asked me to hook him up with some BM to try, so I thought I might as well post the links here, in case anybody was curious what the genre was about. I am in no way saying I'm an expert on the genre but I think these six albums are a pretty good introduction. Of course, if anybody has something to add, feel free.

Hahahaha.
I'm downloading the Emperor one first, then I'll get the rest. Thanks a lot bro.

I just read over Mayhem and Emperor's Wikipedia profiles.
All I have to say is that this isn't my type of stuff. Hahaha.
I'm not done listening to Emperor, and it's not bad, but this isn't my thing. The drummer is top-notch, though.

i think transylvanian hunger is a better introduction to darkthrone, as well as that style of icy cold BM.. but that's still a great list.
i would throw dissection - storm of the light's bane on there as well as an example of the more thrashy, melodic side of BM.. and it's a fucking killer album so all fans of metal should hear it!

Absu - Tara is pretty easy to get into, too, but it's not pure BM. Very thrashy. Destoyer 666 is like that as well.

Stradale, how long have you been into black metal? IMO your list is a bit meh... Especially from Gorgoroth & Immortal, meaning great bands but they have MUCH better albums than those.
Any way, Im pretty much a black metal nut. Its basically all I've listened to for the past 10 years, & I played in a few BM bands.
I recommend:
Masters Hammer - Ritual
Gorgoroth - Antichrist, Under the Sign of Hell(Far superior to Destroyer, even though that is also amazing)
Immortal - Pure Holocaust (blows At the Heart of Winter away easily)
Ulver - Nattens Madrigal
Satyricon - The Shadow Throne
Darkthrone - Transylvanian Hunger & Panzerfaust
Dodheimsgard - Monumental Possession
Sargeist - Satanic Black Devotion
Silencer - Death Pierce Me
Funeral Mist - Salvation
Watain - Rabid Death Curse & Casus Luciferi
Mutiilation - Black Millenium
Ondskapt - Slave Under His Immortal Will, Draco Sit Mihi Dux, Dodens Evangelium
Clandestine Blaze - Fist of the Northern Destroyer, split with DSO
Deathspell Omega - Inquisitors of Satan & SMRC, (I dont like Kenose)
Fuck... I could go on forever.. These are great though.. and of course a few of these go past the beginners guide to black metal, some are pretty raw.

some great choices here. Absu-Tara is my second favorite BM album of all time.
I recomend:
Lord Belial- Seal of Belial
Graveworm- Engraved in Black
1349- Hellfire
Old Man's Child- Vermin(way over-looked.)
Mayhem- the new one(drawing a blank. something like Adao cho Ordo or soemthing)

I miss Urgehal and Tsjuder
Tsjuder is good, but not totally classic status. And, egdeltar, those are all -great- albums, but a lot of them the black metal neophyte would be turned away by, like - it takes an experienced ear to stomach Nattens Madrigal's production or Silencer's vocals, I'm not gonna lie.
TOTALLY with you on Pure Holocaust though, 10/10 album and Immortal at their best.

If you dont enjoy these albums right away basically, you have no business even trying to listen to black metal. IMO. This is what black metal is. Fuck pretty keyboards and fat goth cunts singing. Thats how I feel about the genre. I do agree some may be a bit harsh for "the beginner" but like I said; Cant stand the heat? GTFO the kitchen, beotch.
Oh yeah, and this is in no way a hit against stradale but I think suggesting Xasthur & Leviathan for a start to black metal is kinda like suggesting JFAC for a first time death metal listener... They are great guys (not really bands per se) but I dont think they really fit all that much.

Black metal is just emo music for metal heads. seriously.. hahah
I think one of the most "evil" records is Gorgoroths Antichrist. It just has good atmosphere and feeling. If you want to listen to one of the most maniacal and utterly depressed records check out Silencer - Death Pierce Me.

Really nothing sounds evily- er than Stalaggh's three single track albums. Not "black metal" per se, but definitely the most misanthropic anti-human noise I have EVER heard. I'll YSI all three in one neat little rar if anybody wants.

as a big fan of xasthur, i find this to be quite offensive. JFAC is watered down, bullshit wannabe death metal for scene kids. xasthur might not be your cup of tea when it comes to black metal, but it is far from trendy or watered down.

Hahaha.. You completely misunderstood me.
I didnt mean Xasthur is watered down. Im friends with Scott, he had plans to release a cd from one of my bands. I have no need to talk shit on his project.
What I meant was they are more like new comers to the Genre, I would want recommendations to start with more pioneers, especially as a "beginners guide."

That's my fault. I felt obligated to put an album of my two favorite solo BM projects from the U.S.
I guess you should replace Xasthur with Burzum for a "beginner's guide".

he's been putting out albums for 7-8 years now, he may not be a genre mainstay but he's certainly not too new to be mentioned as a good introduction to a certain niche of black metal. you may know him in person, but that doesn't mean you should downplay his relevance to the genre.. he has played a huge part in the recent rise in popularity of USBM.
decapitated released their first album in 2000, but they would be completely justified as an introduction to death metal, despite their relative newness as far as the genre is concerned.
