I know the Shure SM57 is "the" mic to use for metal guitar. Are there any other mics out there that anyone would recommend? I want to dual mic my cab. And also what are some suggested placements for mics on the cab? And lastly, how do you ensure that your two mics are in phase with each other?

I like to use a Shure SM57 and a Sennheiser 421 or 441.

Use the three to one rule (http://www.digido.com/index.php?option=com_kb&page=articles&articleid=98&itemid=67) to ensure your mics are in phase.

I like to have the Shure close to the grill, slightly off axis pointing at the cone.

I always use either a 57 or an Audix I5. I have found that you're better off just having someone play through your amp and moving your ear around the speaker and finding where it sounds best rather than going by what other people use. It takes a lot of patients but if you can dial the amp in to sound good in the room it shouldn't have a problem.

2 57s for me too. Usually on different speakers sometimes on the same speaker. Adjust phase by ear.
