View Full Version : Importance of Lessons?

I haven't been playing guitar long and I'm not very good, I slacked off about 5 years ago and am just getting back into playing. It seems harder this time, I'm sure it's just getting my fingers etc. back in the patterns and stuff but here is my question. How important are guitar lessons? I've pretty much picked up everything on my own and before I could play stuff I never ever though I would. These latest tablatures and stuff I have downloaded prove even more difficult.
One main problem I am having is with string jumping, like some of these Nile (albeit Nile isn't all that easy to play!) tabs they jump from the top string to the third and I just can't seem to nail it, I'm always hitting the second string or missing notes, is this common for a relative beginner? I've thought about taking lessons to become a more rounded guitarist but I am wondering if really all you need is practice?
Thanks!

It depends on what you are really after. Are you more concerned with leads or rhythm guitar?
If you are into the rhythm aspect of guitar, riffing and pick shredding...I would suggest not getting into lessons and learn to develop your own skills. You'll become a more creative guitarist in your writing. Originality is formed, from less outside influence.
I find that most guitarist that are really skilled in leads, are monsters at sweeping and scales, appregios...but most of them can't hack it when it comes to rhythm guitar.

Also, practice your ass off. Non-stop shred sessions, it's the only way.

dude if your just starting again try something else other than nile hahaha. Nile is really technical. But lessons are good if you want to learn a lot of theory. Knowing all the theory can really help your leads.

your upset because of your troubles with nile tabs? Hell man.. I'm a beginner as well and I can't even get every riff of "raining blood" down.
