ENGL Powerball VS EVH 5150

who has a warmer sound and bigger gain?

i've tried 5150s before, but i've never touched an ENGL. i'm really curious since i've been really impressed of bands using their heads

I would much prefer a Powerball over a 5150. It all comes down to preference really. Atm I'm using a Peavey XXX though because I got a killer deal on one.

The 5150's sound pretty good stock, but have no bias adjustment. But an Engl costs way more than a 5150...you can get a 5150 cheap, get it modded and it will sound better than the Engl!

I have one of those 5150 II heads. Great Head. All around winner and cheap. Always sounds great. But if you are getting picky and want something different the Engl's are worth looking into. They have a very detailed and articulate sound. Kind of electronic sounding and are great for fast picking or really active playing. 5150 is more like a modded Marshall and has a big wide midrange. The 5150 and the II are a bit different. The II has a more scooped mid but less bass. The original has more bass but a wider mid. Also they changed the names to 6505 and 6505+ for those Peavey heads.

I don't know how many characteristics the different ENGL/Peavey models share with each other, but the guitarists in my band have an ENGL Savage, and a Peavey Triple XXX respectively. They're both very decent heads, both absolutely fit for Death Metal.

i was listening to "Stench..." and that's such a HUGE warm sound on it. which head did you use on that recording?

even that live recording on that reissue of "Stench" sounds fucking amazing.

Again, thats the Mesa Rectifier. To me its always the most present and aggressive sound. But its hard to dial in.

Speaking of Engls... this guy in my city is selling an Engl Fireball for $1,000.00 and I'm going to go look at it and check it out today... probably gonna buy it off him. Can't wait!

Colin can I ask you if you recorded Depopulate with the Peavey 5150II or with the Mesa
I find the Depopulate sound a lot "5150-esque" - love the guitar sound of course
I can be wrong anyway.

Yeah that one was a 5150, an original one. I think the tone on that album is really midrange heavy. Man, that album was kind of rushed. I'd like to remix it someday.

Stench of the Deceased IMO has the best production. and the bass drums are triggered with BASS on them!!! WHO WOULD'VE THUNK IT?!!!
