I have read somewhere that Alchemist members don't like when their music is labeled as metal, especially death metal. But psychodelic rock dosn't sound as a complete definition for their style either. So, how does everyone name Alchemist's music? I'll give it a try. khm khm...

Progressive Psychodelic Artcore

'Progressive Psychodelic Artcore'

Haha, thats utterly gay dude. But yeah ive been having a real hard time classifying it. Just yesterday a swedish friend was asking me on msn how this band sounded and I tried but couldnt make sense and had to send him a mp3 eventually haha.

Nah man, Alchemist consider themselves Metal, it's just the Death metal tag just doesn’t work any more. If you have heard Jar of Kingdom 1993 and Lunasphere 1995 there is a huge Death metal influence present. Austral Alien and Organasm are more Metallic driving psychedelia- That’s the tag that best fits for me. But it's all metal. artcore is pretty gay I agree.

name 1 artcore band that is gay

I heard all Alchemist albums (Jar of Kingdom is my favorite) and I agree that they are metal (although none of the known metal subgeneres), but still there is something that belongs to "-core" music. or is it just me?

And that "psychodelic rock" thing... I read an interview on some Russian web zine where Adam was asked to describe how does Austral Alien sound like and he said "psychodelic rock"...

by the way, taog, whats your real name? I still can't figure out...

I ain't too picky with metal genre names...long if the music kicks ass, it's all good.

To me, Alchemist is something like "Modern Metal" because they're the future!
But this label sounds rather cold while Alchemist's music is so beautiful, complex, emotional, spiritual, ...!
In addition to that I don't know any other band that sounds so Australian if you know what I mean.

Alchemist are Neo Proto-Progressive Psychedelic Praying Mantis Style.

With lashings of death and doom, and ginger beer, oh my!

I hate all these stupid names like "Artcore", "emocore", "Metalcore", all those tags sound so dumb! There is only one "core", and that is "hard"!

anyway.... the only way I can describe the best band in Australia is what I wrote on their band profile page for my website....

"The Alchemist style is like something never heard before, it's Metal, Mellow and Psychedelic, while at the same time being as heavy as all fuck!"

My girl-friend - who isn't into Metal at all - said that "Austral Alien" was the most beautiful music she's ever heard! I think that says it all. ;)

I always thought "epic" should be in there somewhere - their music is definitely a journey.

You're absolutely right. To me Alchmeist is the proof that epic metal doesn't have to be boring. :)

there are too many sub-genres now. its good to hear bands that sound different so i wouldnt know what to call Alchemist other than good ol' Metal/Heavy Rock

That's the spirit, says the german Metal-head! :-)
By the way, I love the term "Surfthrash" you used in the "NEW ALCHEMIST TRIPSIS"-thread (http://www.smnnews.com/board/showthread.php?p=2407264#post2407264)! *thumbsup*

I just saw another great interpretation: Voivod + hallucinogens + more Voivod = Alchemist! (www.sevenstring.org/forum/general-music-discussion/70396-voivod-hallucinogens-more-voivod-alchemist.html):
