If any of you musicians have come across tabs for any cool scales or chord progressions, POST EM! I'll try and find some cool ones, and write down some of my favs.
-I'll probably end up making this a sticky if it works out good.

Luke, I definitely trust your judgement... cause i know you lay down the shred. I was just wondering if you have any tips or books to refer us to?

For all things chords and chord progressions , if you can find them..
Chord Camp 1
Chord Camp 2
Chord Camp 3
All by Tommy Armstrong, a local Sacramento teacher based out of Skips Music. These are seriously the best. As for scales, I still haven't found any that I've liked which is why I went to a teacher. Monster Scales and Modes by Dave Celentano was decent and fairly concise, not sure if its still on the shelf these days. For those chord books though I'd give Skips Music a call and see if you can order them, or email them and get in touch with Tom. A student of mine recently mentioned CC 3 was out of print.
But anyways, the Guitar Grimoire is a joke. The guy who wrote that thing obviously intended to make it look like the most complex, difficult and painful instrument on the planet when its really supposed to be fun. :emot-cryi

The string skipping/alternate picking/left hand workout that Ronnie is talking about is as follows...Nothing extremely mind blowing but it works!
-------------------------------------8---7---6-----
-------------------------8---7---6-----------------
-------------8---7---6-----------------------------
-8-9-7-9-6-9---9---9---9---9---9---9---9---9---9---

---------------------------------------------6---7---8---

-----------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------
---9---9---9---9---9---9---9---9---------------------
---------------------8---7---6-----------------------
-6---7---8---7---6-----------------------------------
Repeat from start, it's a looping pattern...
Obviously each finger plays it's own fret (I=6, M=7, R=8, P=9), and it anchors off the pinky just to make it harder since that seems to be everyone's weak point. I came up with this like a year ago, it's a great warmup and has done wonders for my alternate picking. Not exactly a scale or chord though, haha...
The pattern is really obvious when you start to play it, once you get it under your fingers it's just the right hand that you need to concentrate on...

Thats a load of fucking bullshit, and you would only say it because you are a fuckin arrogant prick that has to have the ULTIMATE answer.
Its a great book for under $20.
How is a book that goes over all major modes plus about 20+ other scales showing them in all positions and keys in an easy to read format for under $20 a joke? Its not the end all to end all book, but its a great place to start.
Yeah playing guitar is fun, to bad fucking cheese dicks such as your self make it into a competition.

Wow, I'm surprised to see someone else mentioning this book. I bought this book a long time ago. I thought it was decent at the time. It has pretty much all the regular known scales out there, plus tons of exotic scales.
The only thing I didn't like is that it only showed each scale drawn out on the fretboard in one key. So if you wanted to play the scale in a different key you either had to damn good with the scale and the ability to play it shifted up or down on the fretboard (which I was not and still am not) or you had to draw it out yourself on paper which is what I did. But the book would be probably 6 times thicker if all scales were drawn out in every key.
Here again, a decent book that was only like $20 or so.

'Ear Toner' seems the simplest one to use for single notes, some of the others get more technical.
Pretty boring compared to playing guitar, but quite helpful to improvisers when done for 5 minutes a day or something.

Yeah, I thought string skipping was actually skipping a string, such as playing a note on string 6, and then the next note on string 4 (skipping string 5).
But anyways, the stuff dude posted is some awesome stuff to check out.

Thank you very much to everyone who has contributed in this thread, just practicing basic scales and learning them is helping me a lot.
I love death metal, and can play a lot of what i hear, because I have close to perfect pitch, but I have always just learned by ear, and never learned any theory. I can rip through some Necrophagist songs, but i don't know the name of a single chord or scale, and when I mean I don't know scales, I mean the only scale I know of is the one that weighs pot. I know how to tune my guitar and about guitar tunings, but that's close to it. you think there are a lot of other people like me? or should i just have taken the time to learn this by now?
In any case thanks Defleshuary and Matt and everyone else for the scales, I will bookmark this thread, and check back here regularily.
Kinda off topic, but Matt, can you make an educational thread similar to this one about chords and scales, about the technical aspects of guitar and amplicifation? Not about recording equipment technical aspects, but there is a lot of technical terms people use when talking about various gate compressors, tube vs solid state... for years I worked on an amp which was the size of a shoebox, and limited to treble, mid, gain, and bass, and all i had to know was where to plug into to produce sound. I'd love to see a thread where people jut contributed their various tidbits of knowledge of pre-amps, rack mods, and all that other flashy technical stuff.
Thanks to all you guys who know your shit, and it's really cool that you guys can take gratification from helping people learn about things without any other reward than to help your fellow musician. Much respect.

Personally I've played piano for a long time and I know all the basic scales and chords well enough, but I haven't bothered learning them on guitar yet. Although I can hear scales pretty easily so I think if I decided to it wouldn't be too hard to convert my knowledge from one instrument to the other.
I'm torn between wanting to improve my guitar playing ability, and wanting to stay more creative by not being restricted by conventions. And sometimes I feel like knowing all the rules will make me follow the rules.

www.musictheory.net has really good theory lesson's, as well as an excellent ear and interval trainer.
There are some great exercises on here. I think it's handy to take everything on here and practice alternate picking them starting on a downstroke, then starting on an upstroke. That would aid in things that are in odd groupings or meter's and allow you to be ready to accent on upstrokes. Also good for nailing riffs with "inside picking".
Here is something that I practice each time I pick up my guitar, first starting with a downstroke, then with an upstroke. It's from The Stillborn One, one of my favourite licks with some degree of technicality:

Can you play any Psycroptic there BZM? I noticed the shirt on your hungover video lesson.
I know a couple riffs in Alpha Breed, it's not extremely technical, but it's a good challenge.
I dunno man, the triplet sections of Alpha Breed can get pretty fucking intense - what enthralls me so much about Psycroptic isn't so much how difficult what's being played is, it's the WAY it's played - there's not a single rhythm player in death metal more intense than Joe Haley, imo. It's the fact that EVERYTHING he plays is without flaw (especially his right hand, jesus) and syncs up perfectly with his brother on the skins - that just makes me pop a raging boner every time I listen.
To be honest, I find Alpha Breed to be more difficult than Ignominious and Pale by Necrophagist (riffs only), but that might be because parts of the Alpha Breed tab I have are wrong, I dunno... either way, Psycroptic is no walk in the park, and I <3 that band.

Well, that's a tough call. I know what you're saying with the rhythm section, but some of the riffs, from the tab that I got from Rivers of Gore, are pretty easy. I'm not saying the entire song is that way, as a whole that would take me a while to learn and memorize, and a fuck of a lot longer to get it as tight as the album.
But, I guess I would have to say that Alpha Breed as a whole is tougher than Ignominious and Pale, even though both are very difficult. As you pointed out though, the solo for I&P is fucking tough, that first run alone is hard shit. Groups of 6 16ths at 116bpm. Hard to get that clean, let alone being able to play it at that speed consistently.
Symbiotic in Theory is the most technical piece I've attempted. The sweep picking breakdown is really good practice, but the riffs are all over the place with very odd rhythms. Harder than anything on Symbols of Failure.
I agree about Symbiotic in Theory, absolutely ridiculous - a big part of the credit goes to Christian for that :D. On the whole, though, I'm pretty uninterested with learning Necrophagist's solos save for using them as excersises occasionally... they have no real musical value to me save for a few exceptions. I'm much more into the Masvidal and Laroque school of metal soloing, as well as of course allan holdsworth, paul gilbert, ron thal, shawn lane, brett garsed, etc... taste is of utmost importance \m/

Hey, those guys write great solos too, but I find Necro's stuff to have melodic, compositional and technical value.
I love the stuff James Malone does on United in Regret, leads and solos. Although, it is a lot of legato and tapping, but sounds difficult, regardless.
Haha, technicality is really irrelevant to me - the only thing that matters to me is melodic phrasing, tastefulness, and presentation to me. I guess I'm just burned out on the whole neoclassical thing. And I was really disappointed by the new Arsis :(
Whatever gets your motor running though, you seem to really know what you're talking about so I won't hold any of your opinions against you :)

That's an odd sweeping lick. Gets you used to some different positions, but doesn't have much melodic value. Look up minor, minor 7, major, major 7, diminished and augmented arpeggios, those have interesting sounds and have somewhat difficult positions.
Go for 3 string triad sweeps, to five string triplet sweeps, then tackle some 6 string ones.
The diminished arpeggio shape is probably my favourite, although, the one I can do flawlessly is the minor shape. Diminished one is used a lot by Yngwie, it's great practice, and sounds quite shred.
For me, honestly, I found five string sweeps SO much easier to begin with than 3 string sweeps, mainly because when your hands are still relatively inexperienced and lack synchronization, the greater amount of right hand movement in the three stringers was too much - i found it much more relaxing to do the five stringers, where your right hand spends less time changing directions.
I love diminished and augmented too, but very few people know how to use them tastefully :\

Maj, Min, 7th, Aug, Dim.

Haha, can you be more specific? There are like at least 3 different shapes for each of those, save for augmented (which only has one shape due to it being perfectly symmetrical)

D = downstroke (even though you're RAKING, not making individual strokes - one fluid motion!), V = upstroke. You can move the notes to different strings to create different shapes which can be more convenient depending on where you are on the fretboard, like I said, there are 3-4 ways sometimes to play those exact same notes and they'll sound identical pitchwise (but obviously different playing dynamics will net you a different timbre, etc.) But, that should be more than enough to get you started. If you want to play them 3 string or 4 string, just chop off however many notes off the bottom you want. You can even do a 2 string sweep! (you'd be surprised at how many people have problems with those)

I have found that the best reference is John Mclaughlin's This Is The Way I Do It. Its a 3 dvd box set shows how he solos over chords, how modes tie into solos, what are modes and scales and also super cool solos that he tabs out and demos fast and slow. You can find the Box set on oink. Here Is a DL link to the tabs, chords and midi to all that is shown in the dvd.

I had a decent understanding of a polyrhythm but this article gave me some closure and a very good understanding of it. Thanks!
Check this page out, it's a pretty amazing idea, and helps you get past some personal compositional blocks. However, using this method makes whatever your writing usually keyless, unless you purposely put a modal or scalar pattern into your 12 tone circle.
http://www.ronjarzombek.com/rj12tone.html
Ron Jarzombek is definitely one of the most progressive musicians out there today.
I've used tone rows before, but that circle of tones shit is mindblowing... i'll have to take a deeper look at it when I have more time.
Ouroboros
01-23-2007, 01:25 PM
Yeah, it's a lot less restricting than using tone rows, since you can use different group patterns giving many different options with your circle, instead of just taking a row, and applying retrograde and inversions to it.
And, I kind of had a brain fart in my previous post. It is pointless to use scale or mode fragments in this circle, because the tone circle's whole purpose is to eliminate the use of typical patterns and methods. Also, even if you did, there are still 12 tones being used, so it would always be keyless, regardless of one riff or lick being in one particular mode/scale.

Yeah, that's the way to do it. I have trouble with string skipping at shred speeds too, but all it takes is practice. So much practice that you think your fingers are going to split open...And then more practice.
That's a sweet vid. He screws up playing it slow though, heh. But still, Loomis is a killer guitarist. I was checking out his new 7 string Schecter. Why don't you like that company?
Their quality control is fucking awful... I picked up a C1 at a music store, there were disgusting bubbles in the paint, jagged frets... - another thing about schecter is that they always use high quality components (pickups, tuners, bridges, etc) and yet they STILL don't play as good as other guitars in the same price range which might not have all the name brand stuff on them (like Ibanez), but play better and SOUND better (I don't think Schecter uses very good wood...)
I will admit though... Loomis' new signature guitar, the one with the ash body and maple fretboard and 26.5" scale (very unique! inbetween a fender and baritone scale)... it looks RATHER sexy, and it might just be enough to change my opinion of Schecter... I just have to play one and see what happens.

03-26-2007, 01:50 PM
Yeah, I'd love to try one out.
A friend of mine has a Schecter, I don't know the model, but it was a higher-end one, and it was pretty great. No factory screw ups, but he did customize a lot of stuff on it. The dude builds his own guitars, and he says he would recommend them. Everyone I've talked to prefers Ibanez over them though.

I saw the Caug arpeggio in the pages before and wanted to find a way to make it function in a lighter mood so I just did this.

e|-------------------19h20b19---
B|----------13h17/20------------
G|-------13---------------------
D|----14------------------------
A|-15---------------------------
E|------------------------------
C E G# C E G B C

And if you like sweepin', tappin', and stretchin' more,
here's the same thing just arranged a bit differently:

e|-------------12h15h1920--
B|----------13-------------
G|-------13----------------
D|----14-------------------
A|-15----------------------
E|-------------------------
C E G# C E G B C
|---Aug---||---Maj7---|
Basically both variations of the riff are a set of connected arpeggios:
CAug (C E G#) and Cmaj7 (C E G B). As you can tell, I've included the note
relative to the fret so you can connect the dots.
The first variation is what I originally played it as. I like slides and
such so I naturally did that. I don't sweep the Aug but obviously you can.
The second one is more for the typical shred thing. Sweep where applicable.

okay, point taken, that was just a little vague...more or less tabs, and stuff to help playing in general. I know a lot of it is just practice and taken the time to do it, but it'd be nice to start something with a half-assed idea of what im doing, ya know?

Does anyone here have any lessons for two-handed tapping (like the last song on the Element album)? I'd love to get to know it more. I've learned Between The Buried And Me - "Breathe In, Breathe Out" which is really fun (I'll upload the tabit file if anyone wants), but that's about it. Any info would be appreciated.

This one is pretty fun to learn, it's a good exercise I think.
It helped improving my 2-finger tapping, which I think is fun as hell!
I had some links with other tapping exercises, but I lost them due to a crash...not sure what the adresses were,
but I'll post them as soon as I remember 'em.
Sorry if I didn't help you with that link.
EDIT: I'll just post the whole exercises-section off of Frank Schiphorst's website.
Lots of good exercisesm such as tapping, sweeping, picking exercises, etc.
Click 'Tabs' for these exercises I'm talking about.

Here are some symmetric scales/arpeggios in various patterns that I wrote out today. Make sure to play these descending as well as ascending. Hope I didn't put too much here :)
This is the half-whole scale (in C), also known as the diminished scale. If you start on the second note, it is the whole-half scale. The scale has a really cool sound and seems to be commonly used in some jazz-fusion and metal bands like Martyr, Blotted Science, Vuvr, etc. It works really well for soloing over diminished chord progressions. Listen to the solo in Martyr's Perpetual Healing for an example of the diminished scale in action.
|------------------------------------------8-9-11-12-||
|----------------------------------8-10-11-----------||
|---------------------------8-9-11-------------------||
|-------------------8-10-11--------------------------||
|-----------9-10-12----------------------------------||
|-8-9-11-12------------------------------------------||
This is an interesting way you can play the scale using string skipping.
|------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------||
|---------8-10-11----------10-11-13----------11-13-14----------13-14-16----------14-16-17----------16-17-19--||
|------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------||
|-8-10-11---------10-11-13----------11-13-14----------13-14-16----------14-16-17----------16-17-19-----------||
|------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------||
|------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------||
Same thing, but using the G and E strings.
|--------8-9-11---------9-11-12----------11-12-14----------12-14-15----------14-15-17----------15-17-18--||
|--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------||
|-8-9-11--------9-11-12---------11-12-14----------12-14-15----------14-15-17----------15-17-18-----------||
|--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------||
|--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------||
|--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------||
This is the whole tone scale (in A). I've heard Martyr, Blotted Science, and Gorod use it to very interesting effect. Listen to the solo in Gorod's Hidden Genocide for a great example of this scale in action.
|--------------------------------------11-13-15-||
|-----------------------------10-12-14----------||
|---------------------8-10-12-------------------||
|--------------7-9-11---------------------------||
|-------6-8-10----------------------------------||
|-5-7-9-----------------------------------------||
Another way to play the scale. It takes less movement but covers fewer notes.
|-------------------------5-7-9-||
|---------------------6-8-------||
|-----------------6-8-----------||
|-----------5-7-9---------------||
|-------6-8---------------------||
|-5-7-9-------------------------||
A string skipping pattern for playing the whole tone scale. Very simple.
|--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------||
|--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------||
|--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------||
|-------5-7-9--------7-9-11---------9-11-13----------11-13-15----------13-15-17----------15-17-19--||
|--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------||
|-5-7-9-------7-9-11--------9-11-13---------11-13-15----------13-15-17----------15-17-19-----------||
Similar to the last, but this covers all the strings.
|---------------------------------------------------9-11-13-||
|----------------------------------8-10-12-------------------||
|--------------------6-8-10----------------8-10-12----------||
|-------5-7-9---------------7-9-11---------------------------||
|-------------6-8-10-----------------------------------------||
|-5-7-9------------------------------------------------------||
Ah, here we are. The Dim7 arpeggio. This is used (and abused) by countless death metal (and deathcore) bands. Necrophagist's Foul Body Autopsy is pretty much an exercise in this arpeggio, so listen to that if you're not sure what this is. Here it is in A.
|-------------------------11-14-||
|-------------------10-13-------||
|--------------8-11-------------||
|---------7-10------------------||
|-----6-9-----------------------||
|-5-8---------------------------||
Here's a cool string skipping pattern for the dim7 arp.
|--------------------------------8-11-||
|----------------------7-10-----------||
|-------------5-8-----------8-11------||
|-----4-7---------7-10----------------||
|---------6-9-------------------------||
|-5-8---------------------------------||
These last two are some cool patterns that can be repeated using this arpeggio.
||-----------------------------||
||o---------4-7-10-7----------o||
||-----------------------------||
||------4-7----------10-7------||
||o---------------------------o||
||--5-8-------------------11-8-||
||--------------5-8-11-8-----------------||
||o---------4-7-------------------------o||
||-----------------------11-8------------||
||------4-7------------------------------||
||o---------------------------12-9------o||
||--5-8----------------------------11-8--||
Thanks, hope this helps somebody!

I've never opened this thread before, but there is some useful shit in here. I just ran through all the exercises on the first page. Ive seen a lot of them before, but i havent been in lessons in a couple months, so I'm rusty as hell, and when I was in lessons I was more about musical stuff than technical stuff.
I havent read the whole thread, so I dont know if theres already one in here/the same one id post, but I have a pretty good finger dependency practice somewhere in my passitino notebook from lessons, I'll definitely post it some time when I'm not about to go to bed.
PS I suck balls at rolling fingers from fret to fret and keeping a strong, clean, sound. Does anyone know any tricks to that type of stuff?
EDIT: Froren. I just got to your post on this page. Can you give me an example of a song that used the whole-tone scale? Cause generally that is a very difficult one to use and is reserved for the dream sequence passages in movies, as far as I know.

Here's a video of me playing this for your guys' pleasure, lol
http://youtube.com/watch?v=BvBc4qkBh_4
that actually helped a lot, cause i missed the T, and I was wondering how the fuck you got that stretch in there haha.
And reading the Polyrhythm article made me understand it a lot better, and realize I've done stuff like that, like playing quarter note triplets over a 4/4 beat on a metronome in class. This thread is useful, bring it back.

This is a pretty good exercise for both string skipping and finger independence. You hold your 2nd and 3rd fingers on the 3rd and 4th frets of the B string and use your 1st and 4th fingers to play the notes without moving your other two fingers.
You can also hold down your 1st and 4th fingers on the 2nd and 5th frets (on B) and use your 2nd and 3rd fingers. That looks like this. I am horrible at this one though.
