Let's Grindcore!
11-30-2006, 05:51 AM
Cleanoff & The Kill - the obvious choice! Some of the best grindcore of all time, hands down. The Kill might possibly be the most intense grind recording ever. Like, whoa.
NVE - Mass Murder Festival - filthiest gore guitar sound ever? "Like two trucks racing" (thanks Christoph). So raw and primal. Insane drumming. An all-time classic for me.
Bradyphagia/NVE split - Bradyphagia's ok but I love the NVE much more. If NVE were being sold to you by a Mexican drug dealer he would say "this is the pure shit homes"
Bile - Camp Blood - if NVE is filthiest guitar, this must be filthiest bass I reckon. Like a washing machine full of rocks and mangled bodies! Perfect mix of gore, groove and dooooooom. Crushing!
Hymen Holocaust - Necromance - Didn't really dig it at first but it grew on me like an almighty fungus! Hypnotising grooves, mad chunky chunks, and a slightly dark, ominous vibe in places I reckon. I actually like it more than the new one.
How 'bout you?

Everything you said but don't forget Vaginal Carnage. I love Le Mort as well and NVE is so fucking awesome I can't explain. Does anybody have a copy of the Bradyphagia split I can grab off them??? Would love to hear the stuff on that one.

Oh Right, I guess I associate FID with No Escape so much that I can't remember that they ever released stuff on other labels.

numero uno:
The Kill - Soundtrack... still my favourite record ever, just edges out Symphonies Of Sickness and Return To Desolation by Phobia. I doubt anyone will ever reach those heights of just balls out grindcore insanity again.
equal second:
Bile- Camp Blood, because there's not a second of that cd that could be improved.
and MeatYard's stuff on the Maggots split. I still can't figure out why meatyard aren't one of the biggest bands of the true underground. they basically mixed everything that is good about the most extreme metal and grind has to offer, the darkness, the violence, the sickness, the filth, the blasts, the doom, the grooves, the nastiest of vocals, the most monumental riffs, the total old school feel but never sounds generic. Seems like alot of people just don't get it, or maybe the folks who love the old school raw death/grind can only admit to liking it after it's had 10 or 15 years to gain a cult reputation. I reckon maggots fucking rip too but it's hard not to fall into the shadows on a split with MeatYard.
third: NVE - mass murder festival. Even if the rumours are true and they did steal half these songs from LDOH i doubt anyone could have pulled them off this well. To me this kinda signalled a coming of a new wave of pure raging goregrind (at least that's the vive i got at the time) but it never really seemed to happen. something went wrong just afterwards and all the czech bands discovered nu-metal and the rest of the world got lost in the ass of cybergrind. And that guitar sound was incredible. I was listening to it at work one day and a dude asked what it was and i told him, and he said it sounded like 2 garbage trucks drag racing.
fourth would be the FID/Sanitys dawn 7". The sanitys Dawn songs are really killer and they were the last from their goregrind era I believe, but the FID shit was incredible! Every song was a total classic and the song Fuck...I'm Dead is still one of the most amazingly constructed grind songs ever, it just keeps on piling on and piling on the momentum and madness until it seems like it just can't keep going, then that little ascending snare roll gives it just enough respite, then it just explodes again! AWESOME!!! And the snakey winding Nile kinda riff at the end just rules!
Fifth would probably be a toss up between Vaginal carnage - Dildo Detention and TDEBN - Le Mort. The VC was just the pinnacle of that melding of pure goregrind and the chunkier guttural deathy stuff that has almost never been done properly since. The riffs were so awesome and fab's drumming was really inventive and used a lot of non-conventional (for grind) rhythms and beats that gave a lot of the songs a very distinctive character, and the mega blasts always came at exactly the right time! And Chris' vocals were incredible, an amazing range, the lows were so sick and burbly and the highs had such a vicious quality and all were done with so much energy and conviction. a lot of people can get that low, but no one else ever really does it and keeps it sounding aggressive and TRULY brutal.
Le Mort blew me away the first time i heard it and every time i heard it since i liked it more and more, for soemthing that seems so simple there's a shitload of really great stuff going on that kinda slips under the radar until you listen to it enough. Mardy's drumming really makes it though, some of the smartest playing around.
I can't be fucked going on about every release... but there's a lot more stuff that i really fucking love.

oh yeah i forgot about meatyard?!?!?... but I think most people here probably know my opinion on them anyways. Probably THE sickest band in this world, Nathan continues to write some of the darkest riffs I've ever fuckin heard. Maybe its a good thing after all that NZ is stuck in an isolated time warp...

Well said! That's always been one of my favourite FID songs, especially live. Works so well as a finish to the set. As you said it just keeps building up and up, the little snare roll rules, then after getting pulverised again it's grooooove city before Jay stage-dives on your head! Classic!
Also agree with pretty much everything else you said hahah :emot-hand
