I'm a long time death metal fanatic, and I can firmly say death metal is boring now. Who's putting out kick ass albums? The pioneers all suck and put out garbage, Deicide, Cannibal Corpse, even the mighty Cryptopsy can't release an album to rival None so vile or Blasphemy...

Grind is where it's at. Brutal Truth rule and will destroy the MDF. Look at last years bands, Rompeprop, Butcher ABC, Machatazo, Haemorhage, Sayyadina, these are the bands that tore shit up and they are all grind/gore bands.

i love old school stuff the most but come on, their are plenty of newer bands out there kicking ass. you got Dim Mak, Psycroptic, Spawn of Possession, Crowpath (not death metal but deal with it), Vile, and there are plenty more. its just been a slow year for death metal. but come on, the new Cannibal Corpse was pretty decent. probably their best since Bloodthirst. Vader put out a solid album. not on par with Litany or De Profundis but what is? and how about the new Dismember? definately their best since Hate Campaign. then you have Immolation still cranking out great albums. Harnessing Ruin (last year) wasnt spectacular but it was quality.

i agree about grind though. although i dont think Romperstomper are even music. same goes for Butcher ABC. they were fun to watch but please. i can play that shit and ive never really touched a guitar. but yea, grind is great and all that but how many people at these fests can actually tell grind songs apart. i know i can (atleast with the bands i listen) for the most part. fact is the majority of the people coming to these fests are there because its a social gathering. they really dont care whos playing. they just wanna come, buy cds for cheap, drink beer, talk to people, and watch bands not caring if they like them or not. maybe thats the right mentality to have. but 90% of these people are in it for the short term and will be into something else in a few years. i went way off-topic and i should probably delete this but for the sake of hearing someone bitch at me, im gonna let it fly

I love GOOD death metal as much as the next guy, but I haven't heard any in a LOOONG time. Bands that used to kick ass like Skinnless, Aborted, Cryptopsy, have released shitty albums lately and can't come close to their debuts. Christ Suffocations last album SUCKED hard.

It's not grind vs. death in my book, but there seems to be no good death metal coming out at all anymore.

I completely disagree. Death Metal is much more of a hateful emotional thing, the songs have purposes rather than just making toilet emissions for 45 seconds and thinking up some incredibly retarted title about bowel movements.

Im saying this and I play in a goregrind band! If you want a funny fest with alot of amusing, comical entertaining acts, go grind, if you want a DEATHfest with the most slammingly brutal bands across the globe you gotta go with the bands that put some serious effort into making their material fast, brutal and /or technical.

Im not saying eliminate grind, I like how they have a little bit of everything without incorperating garbage like Sounds of the Underground does. But I would say keep it mostly Death Metal. Have some grind acts, Brutal Truth, whoever else you fancy, and then get a instrumental band or something and mix it up but keep the focus on showcasing America and the rest of the worlds most Brutal/innovative bands because if we want the scene to thrive we have to support the bands that have potential, the DEATH metal bands.

Whats so wrong about subgenres? Its just a better way to define the sound of a band. If someone asks me what Libido Airbag or NWC666 sounds like im not going to say goregrind or grindcore, because if i do, and the person gets the cd, they'll just be disappointed because its incorrect. Subgenres are just a better way to let someone know what sound the band is making without having to list at ton of other bands as influences.

It really makes things a lot easier to not have only a certain set list of genres, And i for one support subgenres because they decide to incorporate different sytles into a new hybrid form of music. Yes it can be done incorrectly, but when done properly its something fresh and new that respects all styles that they incorporate.

If you dont dig subgenres than have fun listening to the same old shit over and over untill the day you die, thats your choice. But im much more open to new things happening in extreme music, and im not gonna let a bullshit mentality like, "must listen to certain style thats already been played out, or will look fake and undedicated to scene" ruin shit for me.

Dude, what the fuck are you talking about, the new Cannibal Corpse is a good record, and dude, even if you dont like the newest CD, those bands are still playing old shit and working their asses off to give you some metal. Yeah I realize CC isnt going to do 12 albums exactly as good as tomb of the mutilated, but they still do their best and kick ass live, what more can we ask? Cryptopsy's live show has only gotten stronger as of late, and Im not a deicide fan so I cant tell you much about them. Dude just because you dont like a bands new CD doesnt mean they have changed so much, I guarentee, if you see any of those bands live they will be playing old shit. HELL, CC still closes with Hammer Smashed Face and Cryptopsy played every single track off NSV and closed with Defenstration on their last tour! Those songs havent been forgotten!

Nobody really else goes to the vocal extremes that CBT does, cause well, CBT did enough for the everyone. They've been lucky as far as not having clones spawn from their success.

new Spawn of Possession is bad ass. top 4 as far as death metal goes (behind Dim Mak, Suffocation, and maybe Deicide)

new Psycroptic is good but a letdown compared to Scepter. the guitarists didnt challenge themselves nearly as much as they did on their last one

new Decapitated is good. songwriting has got a bit of a Meshuggah flare to it that im digging. best thing they've done since Winds of Creation

and the new Anata is piss poor. yay, they can play their instruments. melody abound. but their songwriting now is dick. worst thing they've done, hands down

thats 6 or 7 good death metal discs this year. maybe 3 or 4 worth talking about in 10 years. so yes, this has been a sub-par year in death metal

Infernal Depths and Under A Stone blew the new one away. on those, they actually wrote songs. and not cool parts here and a cool riff there. they're the death metal equivalent of that band Between The Buried And Me now. lots of cool parts but no real cohesion. and my god were they boring at Deathfest this year. i was so jacked on seeing them. weak setlist with the exception of 3 songs

This is very sad you only think there have been 6 or 7 good DM releases. This year has been the best death metal year in a LONG TIME, so unless you're just one of those people who can't handle "brutality" or whatever, I dont see the problem.

just because i purchased them doesnt make them great. some are great (as far as death metal goes...Deicide, Dim Mak, Spawn of Possession).

some are pretty good (Gorod, Psycroptic, Dismember, Decapitated, Cannibal Corpse)

and some are good now but are forgettable in 5 years (Gory Blister, Atheretic, Sulaco, Saprogenic, Guttural Secrete)

im a realist. i know what i like and dont like. i cant get into that Drawn And Quartered shit. it all sounds the same. thats why i listen to Guttural Secrete (somewhat, i dont listen to them often) and Saprogenic. thats my fix for retarded brutal sound-like-every-band-on-California-Deathfest metal.

and im one of the pro bring more death metal to MDF guys and even i can see grind has had a way better year. new Cyness is unreal. General Surgery dropped a bomb on the grind world. i cant believe barely anyone is talking about that one. new Ingrowing is them in top form. Phobia finally got a good production. their new one is killer. Cretin dropped some bad ass old school shit on us. Haemorrhage had a good one. not their best but still quality. and that new Splitter was pretty sweet.

Damn, I could not disagree with some of you dudes more on the new Anata. I definitely prefer it to UASWNI, even though that album fucking rules, I find that the songs on the new one are more distinguishable from one another. I think the songwriting is fucking unbelievable, that's really what I love most about them. And as for the comment that this album sounds more like other technical dm bands, I don't know, I just don't see it. I don't know of anyone who sounds like Anata, regardless of if you're talking about UASWNI or the new one. But whatever, just my two cents.

I always think it's fucking stupid when people bitch about whether or not death metal is as good as it was in the past, blah blah blah. No matter how much music I hear, I always feel like there's a million bands that I haven't gotten a chance to get into that are great. Listen to a bunch of types of music, there's so much great stuff out there beyond death metal. Then if there's only a few death metal cds that you like in a given year, big fucking deal. There's plenty of stuff to enjoy out there, don't even worry what fucking genre it's from. If you can't find enough music to make you happy, your fucking loss.

the majority of music today outside of metal sucks to me. i can listen to metal day and night and be fine. i work in the classic rock i grew up on and im good. i cant do the indie rock shit thats becoming this years Good Charlotte of '04. i have Sigur Ros cds and that crap bores me. Tool's new cd pretty much sucked. Radiohead keep dicking around but im sure whatever they do wont be in the same ballpark as The Bends. and im not a jazz person like every other messageboard death metal fan pretends to be

This is very sad you only think there have been 6 or 7 good DM releases. This year has been the best death metal year in a LONG TIME, so unless you're just one of those people who can't handle "brutality" or whatever, I dont see the problem.

If you find no merit in this year's releases from Spawn of Possession, Psycroptic, Anata and Decapitated, well, I question your sexuality.
i'm a fully confident redblooded heterosexual, yet I find all the above to be varying from as gay as a wiggle in your walk to full blown anal penetration...

The majority of what's labelled as "tech death" tends to be insubstantial fretboard masturbation anyway...

i wouldn't say "death metal nowadays is boring".... true there's a LOT of bands out there being sorely overrated (Necrophagist anyone?) and even more bands diluting DM to such an extent this new genre shall forever be known as 'emocore'.

but I still know of plenty of bands that play variants of death metal that still interest, adrenalise and/ or excite me.

Just because not every single band that plays death metal is interesting or good for that matter, doesn't automatically mean the whole scene is stale and tepid.


Besides, i'd rather listen to a reanimating Death Metal genre than fuck off over to some homo-erotic goth rock like Type O Negative or Cradle Of Milf...

i'd say General Surgery are distinctly more death/grind than out and out grind... but i do totally endorse 'Left Hand Pathology' as being a cracking album indeed....
