which death metal album has your favorite (not best, but favorite) production?
mine is gorgasm "bleeding profusely"
This is mainly because of the drum production. I like how you can clearly hear the hi hats, and I like the snare tone. There are times where I thought the kicks were a little too clicky, but overall I was pleased with the tone. I do wish the guitars were a little higher in in the mix at certain moments so I could here the riffs a little better, but for the most part it was at a decent level.
honorary mentions-
cannibal corpse "bloodthirst"
disgorge "consume the forsaken"
nile "in their darkened shrines"
cephalic carnage "exploiting dysfunction"

DEATH - HUMAN
Rhythm guitars WAY up front! Huge! - and while low and thick, not just gristly low end mush - actual TONE... Recorded the old way - 2 guitars per side (4 total + solos and extra harmonies) - this method has really been dropped, and I think it's a shame.
Drums - Kick drums up front too, full of bass - so one can slay wiggers driving by. - the rest of the kit - also top notch prep for that - compressed but also very natural and some how "watery" - there's a interconnection between the sound of the kick - THROUGH the toms up to the snare. - took pains getting all those little cymbols to register with brilliance. Snare's a bit quiet, but that's not a problem since there's no blast beats on this record.
vocals, while not quiet per se, are really behind the guitars and kick (at least) - and there's a genrous yet tastefull amount of reverb on them. - The whole record has a mindfulness of "space" actually and they tended to use reverb in proportion to volume - so that if something is quieter - it also just seems further back in the space. (more reverb) ((when I say reverb, it's not just that, a bit of chorus and whatever else too... and obviously not just some pedel, but a top notch enviornment unit from morrisound.
ALLOT has to be said of the MASTERING too!! - brings eveything all that more UP FRONT!!! - good stuff..... I've been waiting 11 years for a production to impress me as much as this album has...
one day.
PS: sorry for length, but once I got started...

Yeah, I gotta agree about the new Psycroptic. Killer production there. Also, the new Necrophagist sounds amazing! I really love the drum recording on Decapitated "Nihility" And I love the production on Suffocation "Effigiy of the Forgotten". I'm sure theres more cant think right now.

Yeah, I'm talking about "Nihility" you know with that song "Spheres of Madness", fuck, I love that song! The kicks almost remind me of Pantera.
I was thinking of another album that I think has killer production, Dimmu Borgir "Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia". I know its not really death metal, but damn... that shit rules! I also like every recording that Death had from "Human" on.

Although the overall production is not outstanding, I love Monstrosity's Millenium. The guitar on that album is incredible just because of the clarity of the tone. For a technical death metal album like that, the ability to be able to discern whats being played and the precision of his technique definitely adds up to something good. I wish he would have played with them or at least someone else longer.

I love the production on 'Consume the Forsaken'! In my opinion i think its their best recording. I dont understand why some people have a problem with well produced albums. If an album has an awesome production, then that makes it all the better!!
I do love the drum production on 'Nihility', but i must say that i like the drum sound on the 'Negation' better.

my favourite style of production would be first Brodequin - Instruments of Torture and Internal Suffering - Unmercyful Extermination, the underground feel those albums have give them a wicked atmosphere
i really enjoy the production of Supreme Knowledge Domain --> fucking in your face stuff
and I agree with the Consume the Forsaken, one the riffs near the start of 'Manipulating the Faith' sounds like a fucking freight train.

Mmmmh, every band has its own sound which in most cases suits'em well.
There's no album with a bad sound, there are only people with a bad taste!
Anyways, favourite sounding album:
SLAYER - Reign in blood (still razor sharp!)
PiercedFromWithin

severed savior-brutality is law
necrophagist-epitaph
gorgasm-masticate to dominate
decrepit birth-...and time begins (guitars could be louder)

Ok, SLAYER is not a Death Metal band:rolleyes:
So now Death Metal:
SOILS OF FATE - Crime syndicate (fat!)
VISCERAL BLEEDING - Transcend into ferocity (brutal but not too clean!)
DECREPIT BIRTH - ...And time begins (guitars are ok :) )
DISGORGE - Consume the forsaken (brutal and evil!)
INCANTATION - Diabolical Conquest (arrghhh...dark and brutal!)

Yeah, thats about the only complaint I have about "Consume", I fuckin love that disc, but it's weird, the guitars are loud in the mix, just hard to understand whats going on unless they are chuncking quarter notes. I don't know why, maybe Diego's tone, or the final mix, or they are tuned a bit too low? It dosen't matter much, because that album rules one way or another, def. my favorite Disgorge album yet.

Yes, that's right. For me the guitars sound a bit muddy.
But that makes the sound as a whole full and voluminous.
And it creates a very dark, almost suffocating atmosphere.
At least for me :)

I think that the best death metal production of all time is Cannibal Corpse's Tomb of the Mutilated! The bass is so fucking heavy in that album that it just makes it all sound really heavy and gorey. Those short bass solos in Hammer Smashed Face and Addicted to Vaginal Skin are badass too.
Decapitated's Nihility: I fucking hated the way it sounded. It sounded way too processed and perfect. Death metal needs to retain rawness, I think. That is partially why I fucking hate the new CC stuff, especially George Fisher.
Unrelated talk: What do you all think of all of Decapitated's albums? The first one I heard was Winds of Creation and then I fell in love with them. I think it belongs in the death metal hall of fame, right up there with Cannibal Corpse. I then heard Nihility and didn't like the vocals as much and the sound was kinda crappy. Then Negation came out which I thought was better, but I wasn't too happy with it because the song structures are very simple and some of the riffs are kinda lame. I might just think this due to Winds of Creation being such an incredible album.

Ugh, the guitar tone was way too fuckin dry.
My favorite production on a death metal album:
Cannibal- Bloodthirst (perfect tone tone for each instrument, heavy and gutwrenching in one)
Cryptopsy- ..And then You'll Beg (damn flawless, vocals were a bit dry at times however)
Severed Savior- Brutality is Law (nice guitar and bass tone)

i'm listening to atheist right now (mix of unquestionable presence and elements) and i think it's got some insane production. but i guess it's not really dm. in their darkened shrines has to be one of the best sounds i've heard for dm, esp. for newer shit. i like yattering's sound a lot, too... not to mentoin decrepit's crushing sound or of course uhh.. suffocation and all the rest...

Oh yes Yattering's genocide has a huge huge sound.
One thing i regret concerning "... and time begins" 's production is that guitars are, for me, too low in the mix
The drum is very high and i can't appreciate all the guitar details.
It's hard for me to put some words on it but the guitar riffs are so great that they should sound clearly, higher..
Definitively one of the best Us Brutal Death album, but it could have been the best :)

Ohh man, i trust you!!!
Yeah, i was "supposing" that as i saw, somewhere, you were talking about a future remix..
It's nice from you not to take my opinion as a critical. Believe me, I know it's hard to make the sound you've got in the head (something i've never managed to do, far away..) . But in fact, i believe this guy, Colin, should have taken your opinion in consideration.
I guess the next one will crush everything :)

I really like the production on Token Remedies Research by Damaged. Raw as fuck but so agressive. Spike Cassidy took care of engineering duties.
I am not a fan of the stuff he did with Acid Bath, i don't think it suited them at all. But he gave Damaged almost the same sound as the Acid Bath album Paegan Terrorism Tactics, and it fuckin rules.
I guess that Ed Schreyer mastering it at Oasis helped there cause aswell.
Cryptopsy-NOne so vile
Suffocation- Effigy of the Forgotten
