How do you guys write out these crazy atonal harmonies, anyway? Do you compose them before you actually sit down and play them [meaning, do you go into power tab or guitar pro or some such thing and play around with the harmonics before you attemot to play them?]

That's a question for Mr Schälin, when I and Andreas make the riffs (seldom indeed) it's mostly for one guitar and then you add another guitar to that. When Schälin makes the riffs he writes both guitars at once. Just listen to the riffs I made (e.g. opening and closure riff of Any Kind of Magic... and second riff in Shakled to guilt) which mostly lack harmonies.

Hi there. For most of the time I use a shitty module program called Mad Tracker 2. It really sounds like shit, which is good. The idea is that when we start to rehearse the songs, it's supposed to sound better. It always does. Anyway this program is perfect for trying out different ideas. I made a billion guitar samples that I use to recreate what I just played on the guitar. I can change a note here and a note there, without having to relearn the entire riff. Or the entire song for that matter. Once I complete a song I present it to the others. If they don't like it, we won't do it. If they don't like a certain part, we'll change it. Although I write 95% of the music, Anata is strictly a band of democracy.

Cool. That's pretty much what I do with my band, except I use Guitar Pro, which can also be used for writing drum tracks... it's expensive, though [which is why I pirated it... shhhhhh :P]
Anata also happens to be a big influence of ours [along with Voivod, Immolation, Gorguts, Adramelech, Demilich, Opeth, Enslaved, etc]. :D

Yeah, the bass is really outstanding on "The Conductor's Departure". And so awesomely meshed within the music. Love!
