Beirut has become very much a ghost city. Luckily we live a bit far off in the mountains, and our immediate areas have not been subjected to bombing. Needless to say this open assault has killed our economy, and resources are depleting due to the blockade. We are trying to keep businesses open while economising heavily on resources. Business activities in the Beirut area have pretty much seized, and our areas have witnessed and influx of people who lost their homes or who have simply escaped. They are being sheltered in schools and office buildings. The first batches of medical and food aids were received this week, which is reassuring, but some areas in the South and the Bekaa valley are completely isolated and people risk dying from disease and hunger. The international community has given Israel the right do to as it pleases in the Middle East, and Israel has retaliated in the most violent waves of death and destruction.

The Hezbollah constitute a large minority of the population. They call themselves the Lebanese Islamic Resistance, and they are predominantly from the Shiite Islamic religion. Contrary to what you hear on the news, they are not a scattered terrorist organisation, but a very well organised military force, very advanced and effective in street warfare. They get much of their weapons from Syria and Iran. This is why Israel is finding it extremely difficult to hit specific targets and to really weaken them, and have resorted to destroying the country’s economy and infrastructure to make it very difficult for people to live, killing hundreds of civilians in the process. The death toll so far is 362 with 1350 wounded. The problem is that Hezbollah do not fear Israel and will not surrender even after losing their homes, relatives and children. This will only lead them to fight harder, and this could develop into a long war. I fear that Israel will widen their assault on Lebanon and hit other civilian areas that are far from the conflict. I just heard 2 bombs explode in a nearby location!!! Cellular phone and satellite TV transmission stations were just hit by Israeli helicopters in areas very far from the conflict. This is happening all over the country today in the aim to weaken communication and prevent news from reaching the world, except from the biased and controlled media.

Lebanon was trying in the last year to integrate Hezbollah into the government and to integrate their forces into the Lebanese army with the aim to transfer all military decisions to the Lebanese government exclusively, in implementation of the UN resolution. Hezbollah wanted some guarantees in return, and thus the process was always going to be a long one. Hezbollah single handedly drove Israel out of the South ending nearly 30 years of occupation, and for that they had the government’s and the people’s support, but now many think their job is over. Hezbollah thought that their kidnapping of Israeli soldiers would start negotiations for the exchange of prisoners, but that was largely miscalculated. On the other hand we all know that this magnitude of retaliation from Israel is not a reply to the kidnapping of 2 soldiers, but the execution of a meticulously calculated plan by which they are wiping out an entire country and punishing an entire population for having had some form of resistance in the past and for acts committed but a faction within the state over which the state has no power or control. They specifically destroyed large factories of plastics and dairy products in the Bekaa valley, and I fail to find the terrorism in making food!

I can see no winner in this war. One outcome is certain, which is the death and destruction of Lebanon. It is a disgrace that the international community have to resort to such measures to resolve ageing conflicts in this day and age. We have seen how well they’ve handled IRAQ. A solution should be reached that would ensure the safety of both countries and serve the strategic interests of both countries. It is very clear at the moment that the international community’s decisions are all in Israel’s favour.

I felt inspired to write this morning, so forgive me if I made this too long ;) I am starting to fear for our safety if the situation escalates, and I am having thoughts of leaving this forsaken place, a very sad situation indeed.

Thanks for that, and cool to hear that OTV are hanging in there. But I fear that if the conflict continues like this for much longer, the hardship on the people of Lebanon will reach catastrophic levels.

So sad...

We could practice today after 9 days of stoppage due to the current situation. Our rehearsal room is localted in the northern suburbs of Beirut close to the seashore, a few hundred meters away from the american embassy. Luckily american and other foreign citizens are being evacuated from the embassy and from a close location on the seashore, and we grabbed this opportunity to rehearse since there wouldnt be any israeli bombing in this particular region obviously. Afterwards we headed to the seafront and had a look on the operations where, helicopters, hovercrafts, a carrier and a destroyer were manoeuvring at a close distance...
I sense that when all the foreigners will be evacuated, we're going to endure much worse than what we already had, in case there will be an invasion of Lebanon from the israeli army. It seems that if this will happen, not only hizballa will be fighting but the lebanese army will join in to defend the lebanese soil. Frankly we're all really disgusted from wars and conflicts happening in our country and we're afraid at the perspective of having no future whatsoever in this land anymore...I hope this will end really soon, with us being alive...
May you enjoy and value more the peace we're so much craving for...
