View Full Version : SEEKING NEW BASS PLAYER
INCINERATE
06-09-2006, 02:06 AM
After 7 years, Mike has decided to leave Incinerate. So we are in search of a new bass player.
We're looking for someone that can fit this mold -
- Enjoys fast technical brutal death metal
- Can play shows, fests, and some possible touring
- Has transportation to get to practice twice a week
- Has own gear, but we do have some bass gear one could use to get started
We have a FREE practice space with full PA in Maplewood, MN.
A few samples of our music can be found here - www.myspace.com/incinerategod.com
Info about us -
We are signed to Brutal Bands - www.brutalbands.net
We have one full length CD and a DVD out
We are nearly finished writing our second CD and are looking to record with a new bassist
We've toured the US with Internal Suffering, Stabwound, and Emeth
We play local and national fests/shows
We got some great shows/fests coming up this summer
Anyone interested in playing bass in a brutal death metal band that has done a lot in the underground, and has tons of great things coming up in the future, please get in touch.
This is a very serious band, so only serious musicians please!

We're not letting not having a bass player delay anything or even slow us down. As for the upcoming CD, if we don't have a full time bassist, I will probably play the bass on the CD. Also our vocalist Jesse has picked up the bass and is starting to work on the new material, just to see if he can and wants to do it. He used to play guitar, so he's not a total newbie with a stringed instrument. So far he's got one song somewhat down. In the mean time though, we will continue to search for a bassist. So at this point we're not sure what direction things will go in regards to bass. But something will fall into place.
Right now, we're concentrating on getting our new drummer up to speed with the new material. He's got half of the material down for our upcoming CD. And of course for live shows he had to learn a few songs from Dissecting. And on the side we are looking for a bassist and working with Jesse on bass to see how that goes. And yes, either way, Jesse will still be doing vocals.
Line-up changes seem to have plagued us since day one. But we still have lots of energy and drive and we will continue to push forward no matter what.

Well a tour this summer never came into play.
We had a European tour lined up but the headliner (Disgorge) cancelled on it and a new headliner could not be found in time. We were offered a US tour with Immersed In Blood and Exulcerate, but we turned it down because at the time we thought the European thing was happening. Then in a last ditch effort to get some sort of tour going, I was going to try to set up some small tour after GOTS, but then our now ex-bassist said he couldn't tour in August because of his job, so that pretty much didn't happen either - only to then have him leave the fucking band.
So as for this summer, we've got a couple of fests (CIM and GOTS) and a few local shows with some killer national acts. And yes, unfortunately as of right now, it will be with just one guitar and no bass. The other option is to just cancel all of these shows, which we don't want to do - a lot of blood was spilled to get all these shows, so we're not giving them up now.
Hopefully the fans will be cool with it and will understand...

why did mike quit? care to share?
Well, about a year ago he joined another band as a side project that was a new start up band. About 6 months ago they became a complete band. This is also around the time that he started showing less interest in Incinerate, missing most practices, not returning phone calls, etc. And it sucked because this is also around the time that we attained a new drummer and we were trying to teach him our material.
This only got worse as the months continued on and his side project band started playing local shows and house parties. Then we played a small fest in Chicago in April and everything seemed cool. But then shortly later he started talking about how he didn't know if he was interested in being in Incinerate much longer. His side project band was now becoming more and more a priority for him. The music was a little more old school, generic, and far easier to play for Mike than our newer material. Mike was losing interest in our new material as it is faster, more technical, and just more difficult to play - it was basically beyond what he really could do and wanted to do I think. I always asked him if he had any material to add to our songs but everytime his response was yes I have new material but it's for the other band.
Then we were scheduled to play a small fest in Kentucky in May. We all knew we were playing this fest like 6 months ago, yet Mike calls us up while the rest of us are at practice 2 days before the fest and says, hey I can't go to the fest, I have work. We all knew it was bullshit. This really pissed us off because we figured it was another one of his lies (very untrustworthy guy too by the way). We ended up having to storm in on his other band's practice (we and his other band shared a practice studio at the time) just to talk to him in person for once. We asked him what was up with Incinerate - in or out. He said he didn't know yet (most likely a scared stall tactic). We said, no we need to know now - he said well I guess I'm out then.
Then comes the part that actually pissed us off. We said ok, what about all the shows we have coming up this summer that you said yes to playing, can you at least stick around to play those shows? Once again, he says, I don't know yet, I'll have to get back to you - which in our mind means fuck no I'm not planning on playing them with you. So basically for no reason at all, he wouldn't at least play the last 5 shows we had scheduled - and get this, two of the shows are shows his other band is also playing at, and they are shows I set up!!! Yeah, talk about a slap in the fucking face.
He purposely chose to leave this band on a very bad note. I can understand a person leaving a band if they are not interested in being in the band anymore. But there is no reason why he couldn't at least go out on a good note with us and play these last few shows, especially when he's going to be playing at a couple of them anyways. We were nothing but cool to this dude for 7 years, and he decides to take a shit on us and just walk away.
So there you have it, all the nitty gritty details about Mike's departure. Fuck him!

What's up Matt. He was an ok bass player. I always felt he thought he was better than he actually was. At least he looked like he was good on stage. But he didn't play shit note for note, which not to sound picky, but we'd prefer someone that is actually playing the material, not just sort of playing some of the key note and slopping through the rest. If he played an Incinerate song on bass by himself, I'd usually have to hear the song like 3 or 4 riffs into it before being able to tell what song he was even playing - and I wrote the material - hahaha. But anyways, we've got some shit brewing with some possible new member(s), so we'll see what happens. And yeah, we need to hit Cali some day for sure! But hey at least I'm making that Bloodletting tour in MN, so we'll all hit up a show in St. Paul on Aug 2nd.

Isn't that how it usually works. Someone quits your band and it's like they disappear off the planet. Randy removed himself 10 months ago and we haven't seen or heard from him (not that we want to). Same goes with Mike, although we'll be seeing him at some upcoming shows we're playing as the band he is in is also playing them. But after those shows it wouldn't surprise me if that's the last time we ever see him.

If you loose interest in a band or have personal problems, just say it flat out. There's not one guy that I used to play with - including my first band - that came up to me and just said that they would like to quit, but then again I don't have any issues with them afterwards! If you want to quit, no problem we'll replace you.

Yeah, I believe I'm supposed to be getting 20 of those worker shirts from you guys. Maybe Matty will send me an email about it. Shit, I still have a couple emails I need to respond to of his. Man, I've been so busy these last couple months, I'm about to go insane. Then again, I'd go insane if I wasn't busy I suppose.
As for the pillow, it's not going to get washed, Jesse refuses to wash it as he enjoys the smell of Vince's drool on the pillow - that's the spot that Jesse puts his face each night - it helps him sleep better I believe - hahaha!

Is there no possible way you can kick them off the bill after all the hassle he's put you through? Even though I don't know Mike or anything like that, he'd have some nerve turning up to a show to play with his new band knowing his ex band Incinerate are playing as well and even worse turning up to play a show knowing it was you that set up the show in the first place, that's a big kick in the nuts. To save himself some credibility he should of done the decent thing to play the 5 remaining shows with Incinerate or better yet been upfront with you guys to start with.

Oh yeah, I totally could have removed his side project band from both shows, but I'm not like that. I'm not going to suddenly take our anger for Mike out on a band. This is all Mike's doing, not that band. So in my opinion is just wouldn't be fair for me to do that. Yeah Mike has no credibility as far as I'm concerned. And I would think his new band would see how he is and question if he'd do the same thing to them, which I'm sure he will.

Well we had one guy here in MN that seemed to be working out. He was learning the new material but it was taking him quite a while - like months per song. But we were willing to be patient and let him take his time learning the material within reason of course. But then eventually he just gave up after having one song down and a couple others somewhat down. He also lived like 3 hours away in northern MN. But at least he tried unlike anyone else in our area. So yeah we're on the search again for a bass player - not fun.
I can't think of one other person in our state good enough to play our material. 95% of the so called death metal musicians in MN are garage band caliber. Any others that have tried playing along with the tab end up giving up instantly. And others don't even bother trying. There simply aren't any good death metal musicians here. So we are quite sure we are going to have to recruit someone from another state. But getting them to relocate is harder than getting them to learn the material. God damn bassists - haha.
We do have one good prospect from out of state we're in talks with right now. Hopefully within the upcoming months we'll have some good news to report regarding this guy. We're crossing our fingers.

There are, it's just that there are very very few people in MN with above average talent. So of those that have tried out, they've all said the material is too hard to play. And those few that have the ability are more interested in staying in their local garage band I guess.

Are you looking for a bass player to do the 8th notes or to match everything the guitar does (play the 16ths)? If you are looking for a bass player to just play 8th notes I dont think you should be having a problem..

Well, matching up with the 8th notes would surely be nice. As for the 16ths, playing 8ths or triplets would be fine. I know playing 16ths at these speeds on bass is basically impossible.
Our old bass player Mike, didn't even play the 8th notes cleanly. The only thing he played tight were quarter notes or slower.
I think the complexity of the riffs and song structures are also scaring people away. From what I've seen so far, everyone that's tried out seems to be looking for something that they can just walk up to and instantly play without it being any sort of challenge. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of ambitious people out there. :emot-fail

Wow that sucks man. I know the one tab you posted of Dissecting The Angels wasnt really all that hard on bass if you play the 8th notes. I have only been playing for 3 years and I can play all of it as 8th notes. It would be hard to play live with having to memorize all the lines but it wouldnt be horrible. That's cool you checked out the Dissecting The Angels tab. We've been giving bassists that are serious about trying out tab for our newer material, which is noticably more difficult to play. We don't want to give them tab off Dissecting, have them join the band, and then find out that our newer material goes beyond what they can/want to do.
Another thing that sucks, is that most of the truly interested people, live to far away.
