for some time....waitin for ur live appereance in italy :)
first of all i want to thank the Atheist crew for what they are doing.I'm sure tons of guys like me were shocked seeing ur name on the bill...even if i'm too young to know you since the 80's (but no im not a metal-newbie!)
i am a bit disappointed about the Rand story...my idol :< but im confident in the Gnostic guys :)
now for the questions:
look at the bill of the Evo festival ( www.evolutionfest.it)
this is pissing me off
u MUST be headliners holy crap
fuck those old school iron maiden clones.is it possible somehow to put you upper than amon etc or is it too late?
mh another question:
i am 5 hours far from the place where the concert will be.
i am a student,so i havent got so much money to spend....u know train+concert thats pretty expensive for me.
so i wonder if anyone have any idea on how time the atheist appereance will last on stage(thats also why i wanted them headliners >_<)
last year @metalcamp(SLO) bands before headliners played just about 5 songs.....that would suck really :'(
ps:it's great that u visit and speak in ur forums :) ...sound weird but lots of bands dont do that cos they feel superior 'n shit.
well good luck for ur tour and c ya at the gigs!
and sorry for my english
cheers,
cactus!

Hey there Cactus! Steve Flynn here (Atheist/Gnostic Drummer). Thanks for posting and for your kind words about Atheist. It doesn't matter that you weren't into the band in 1989, only that you are into Atheist now.
We're all disappointed about Rand, but yes Chris and Sonny will do a spectacular job.... if Chris changes his hair color you might not even know Rand is missing!!
To your first question about our placement on the bill.
I certainly understand your concern about our position in the program, and I know I speak for the rest of the guys in the band when I say we appreciate your comments. However, we really are only a few slots from the top on the final day of the festival. That's actually a very good spot for a band like Atheist... if we were near the bottom or playing behind REALLY unknown bands, we would be angry as well. But, Death Angel, and the other bands in front of us have been around for a long time as well and are deserving of respect. Those bands are a different style and might not be an Atheist fan's favorite, but they are popular and will draw a lot of fans, which is why they're getting a slightly higher position. Hopefully, Atheist will bring in just as many fans to see us perform.
To your second question about the length of time we will play:
I have not yet seen how long each band is allowed to play at Evolution. Typically, a band in our position on the bill will have about 1 hour to perform, and we will use the full hour. We will play many more than 5 songs. I don't yet know how many but you'll get a full Atheist experience.... you won't waste your money.
We know how expensive it can be, but it will be worth it..... We will see you in Brescia
Il vostro inglese è molto buono......
Grazie molto mi amico

I'm Italian too and I went to the first edition of the Evo fest last year. I can confirm Steve is right, bands in that position on the bill should have an hour or so to play.
I'd love to have Atheist headliners too, but it's a bit unrealistic, not that they don't deserve it, but in a festival it's common to place the most popular bands higher on the bill to attract more people... altough I'm sure that alot of people will go to Evolution primarily to see atheist play...
And, for the cost of the festival, sure it is some money, but is really less expensive than most festivals here, Gods of Metal being the prime example...
Hell, I would pay that price just to see Atheist alone!
btw flynner, did you study Italian?? Viva gli Atheist e il Death Metal tecnico!! :)
ciao

HA...no never studied Italian....just common phrases...I can say hello in a lot of languages....ask if you can speak the language in a lot of languages....that sort of thing... you know what they say, when in Rome, do as the Romans do.
By the way, how much does it cost to get into the Evolution Festival?

The festival lasts three days. The first is just a "warm up" sort of thing, only some Italian bands and other (to me) unknown bands will play; you can't buy a ticket for the first day only. Each of the other two days costs 35 euros (about 45 usd), and the whole three days package costs 70 euros (= 90 usd).
The location is a bit particular, it's a very nice place but is quite far from bigger cities, so going there has non-null cost even if you live in the same region - not to mention people living in south Italy, they often spend more to travel to a metal fest than to buy the ticket itself, but probably this is a problem of Italy, not of the festivals...
Anyway, consider that the average cost of a day of Gods of Metal is circa 45 euros. Gods of Metal attracts more famous bands than Evolution, but in the past it has often been criticized for bad organization.
I hope I did... answer exhaustively to your questions.
(I was searching for another expression to say that ^ but it didn't come to my mind...)
See you @ the evolution!
cheers

but guys..are we sure that death angel are so famous?i heard of them 2 years ago for the first time...and they seemed to me some sort of failed attempt to play thrash.

Although I've never really been a fan of Death Angel, they've been around since sometime in the late 1980s, and went inactive for several years...they resurfaced about 5 years ago or so about the same time all the other "metal is trendy again" reunions started happening... (I don't see this as a bad thing, it's nice to see the bands I grew up on again!)
Atheist has always had a smaller following (yes it's a shame, but it's how it is...) we've even heard the guys themselves talking about how hard it was for them to play this style, and how people didn't "get it". They created some mighty fine timeless music... who knows, maybe if things go well this summer, they will find time to do a bigger & better tour...
Last time I saw In Flames (with Sepultura as support), and spoke to Peter (the bassist) he told me they originally wanted Atheist on the European tour that they did with Sepultura... They are HUGE Atheist fans, and that would have fucking blown my mind (although at the same time, it was nice to see Sepultura again as well!) It was still early days, and the Atheist guys were concentrating on getting ready for the summer festivals... To me it was still a bit strange to see Sepultura open for In Flames... I mean I love both bands, but it was still strange...

Death Angel had a huge following in the US. The drummer was sort of a prodigy since he was only 15 when their first album came out. The thrash era right before death metal started to surface is when they where around.

They were Johnny come lately's if you ask me. They had kind of a pop-thrash feel to them, from what I have heard - Act III, that could have worked better if they had broken through a little earlier (useless speculation on my part is sometimes fun for me :D )

Gene's one of my favorite drummers, from Testament's Demonic to those couple Death albums.

In defense of Death Angel, I personally think Act III is one of the greatest albums ever recorded with a lot of that due to the diversity of the music. That album is all over the map. Definetly one of my many favorite bands. If I can ever dig myself out of this hole I'm in, I'd like to fly out to California to check them out live.
Not that they need defending or anything...
