Holy shit. I knew that the drums were crazy just by listening to it, but it's even more impressive to see him do it!

I can't say that I've seen that one before. Thanks for posting!

That was, in fact, that last live show we did together....that is until the upcoming shows in Europe... It was in Tampa..... We launch into "And the Psychic Saw" right after we finished Incarnation's Dream, but it only shows like 3 seconds....

Faster I don't know because there's some very very faster drummers in extreme metal (remember Pete Sandoval, Emil Dragutinovic, Trym, and some others) but technical, it's SURE!!! He's very amazing with his patterns and the differents breaks in the tempo!

That was a really cool clip.

For a sidenote. The triplet based pattern accompanied with quarter notes with ride bell in On They Slay is the coolest rhythm I've heard for a long time.

Steve, how on earth do you memorize all the numerous the parts in the different songs you play?

It's been 20 years that I ask that to myself... how do you remember all that stuff Steve?!!!!!

First Thank you!!

I think (though I could be wrong) that you are actually referring to the song "Piece of time"....no? During the end section of Piece of Time, I do a triplet pattern between the bass drum and snare and hold the quarter-note pattern on the ride cymbal..... If you know for sure that the pattern is in On They Slay let me know what section of the song it is....because I don't think there are any triplet patterns in On They Slay....though it may sound like it. Then I could tell you exactly what I'm doing in that section.

On memorizing all the parts....

it's really two things. One is simply practice and playing songs over and over. You develop what is called muscle memory after a while, meaning that even if I forget a part, as I approach that part in the song my limbs sort of naturally remember the part even if I can't recall it in my mind. Does that make sense?

The other thing is simply the way I write drum parts for songs. I break down each part of a song into multiple sections - usually based on the guitar and/or bass rhythms - and I write drum parts, fills, and changes for each sub-section..(something that drives my bandmates nuts because it takes me a while to complete a song). That way I'm not trying to memorize an entire song, which seems impossible, I simply remember sections of songs....though there are a lot of sections. But, it's much easier for me to remember that way.....

part of it also is just having a good memory for that kind of stuff. I seem to have a knack for memorizing music sections.....many times at Gnostic practices, I will remember how we assembled a song if we haven't played it for a while and remind the other guys.

Does that help?

I think he might mean the part at 0:35 (On they slay)

I still have a problem 'feeling' triplets... I know they have that kind of awkward feel, but so would a 5:4... so I wouldn't even be able to tell the difference..

In Pestilence's "Mind Reflections" at :35 the guitarist is playing 11 eighths in the time of 8, can you guys actually 'hear' that, or do you count the notes, then count the drum beats? I had to do the latter. If I didn't count, I would have thought they were triplets. I actually don't even really like that part because of how awkward it sounds.. I guess that means I'm not technical, ha..

It's the part starting at approx. 00.35(as Epitaph mentioned) and get's really cool 00:40 when ride bell is introduced to the groove.

Ahh... I think you're referring to how the bass drums follow the guitars with the "dum da da da dum, da da da dum" thing... It starts on the snare like a march then I switch the snare rhythm to the double-bass and play the quarters on the ride.... yes it sounds like triplets but it's actually a series of 4 stroke rolls on the bass drums with the quarters on the ride and could be played with 8th notes on the ride and half notes on the snare and bass straight up......

However, you could play it as a triplet feel as well.....
