View Full Version : I guess this is an old topic but: what DIDN'T you like about Alaska?

I've seen quite a few people on this board express their dislike for this album, so I was wondering.

for me, I didn't like:

-the constant use of those single ride cymbal hit transitions
-the incredibly cheesy ending of selkies
-the tacky endings of some of the songs (the primer, backwards marathon, etc.)

what about you?

I don't have many problems with the songwriting, I think it's awesome in that respect. The ending of Roboturner drags, but whatever. I don't like the production at all though.. guitar tone is way too dry, and I'm not a fan of the drum sound. The cymbals sound too distorted to me at times too.

i still fuckin love the cd.

only problem is the repition of things for me. it loses its staying power that s/t and tsc had because of it. i hate to say it, but structure actually made a cd worse. :-(

Too much wank/cheese, shit production, too much "rroooyeee roooyyyeee roooyyyeeee" in Tommy's vocals...Just weak songwriting in general compared to previous bitbam endeavors.

Im sick of how tommy is gaying shit up. first CD rules SC was awesome but there was super gay shit. Now with alaska it fucking ruined it. Oh i still love the musical aspect of it but tommy gayed up the rest

i dont think they've gotten worse or anything, im just kinda tired of the style. listening to them for 3 years straight has gotten old. but its opened my ears to other shit.

production is my only complaint
sounds too warm and dry compared to the other two imo

otherwise i have no problem with them not being super br00tal

It's cheesy as hell and really wanky, just like Ryan mentioned. I don't feel the same urgency or passion that I could detect on the S/T either.

Of course nobody wanted to admit that Solace was better when they both leaked, but now you realize how goddamned right I was.

Alaska is alright, gets boring kinda fast, nothing really that memorable, some good tunes, nothing near the calibur of S/T which i recently fell deeply in love with again, such a perfect first attempt.

The guitar tones were a little too different for me. Change is not always good.

the bad power metal sections, wack solos, filler death metal riffs, shitty production, excessive repeats with certain sections

don't you tell me i didn't complain when they did it on sc, i hated need for repetition

I liked it a lot. I still do.

But it's completely inferior to their other stuff and I haven't listened to it in months. I don't miss it at all.

The sound quality doesn't punch you in the face as much as it did on the other albums, even though I've heard complaints about the production quality of those.

Some of the sections are long and drawn out. Some of the riffs are really shitty, just seem like random notes not played for any specific reason. The songs don't flow as well.

I like it, but it's just not blow-away awesome.

i actually stopped listening to alaska one week after i heard it ...i thikn i just got burnt out on btbam though .

the only album i can listen through all the way every time is the self-titled, every song is tougher then shizballs.

i didn't like Croakies and Boatshoes. that was the most half-assed song they could possibly make. especially the (pitchshifted?) vocals.

that's really not the case...

btw, your brother's drumming is about the only thing that stands out on this album.

TRUE

Tracks 5,8,11 = pointless
Track 6 = for God's sake END...why does it repeat 3453 times?

However, I disagree that Selkies is cheesy. But there are definately cheesy parts, like the intro to Primer, and Autodidact at about 3:43

I agree 100% with this. Some of the riffs are cool but they are all thrown together and the songs go nowhere.

it doesn't have to sound to cool as balls for me to like it imo

i really really enjoyed/enjoy the album, although i too am getting a little burned out on BTBAM. i made a mix of all my favorite metal songs and included all my favorite BTBAM songs and that cd does the trick for me.

yea croakies may be my least fav song by them

i really enjoy the primer though...

the original song title for croakies was "Croakies and Boatshoes: A Day in the Life of a Dudebrah"

The only part of the cd I don't like is the outro to Roboturner.

And I never really thought the actual song Alaska fit in well with the rest of the album.

Captain Amazing

Yeah I think Croakies is pretty fun. It's not "good" as a song, but it's fun to listen to.

^^isthat it? becuase if so, yeah i did.

and regarding alaska, drumming was bitchin' but the tone was shit, crap, and ass all in one. just production period. vocals sucked balls.

i didn't particularly like the new style.
