I have a quiestion for you guys. in my opinion atheist the best death metal band, they are real artist with thier progressive death metal, but i was just looking at an interview that they had with Kelly Shaefer and he mentiond that he liked the drumer from slipknot and that he bought an album from system of a down. so i thought, how can this guy from the best death metal band be listengin to Nu-metal bands like system of a down and slipknot? i want your opinion on this

People are entitled to listen to whatever they want. I play in a Technical Blackened DeathGrind Fusion (aka Fuschia metal) band, but I listen to whatever tickles my fancy, whether it may be ska, jazz, or even metalcore or hardcore. I think that music kind of creates a sense of community and that if people are trying to hard to isolate themselves by sticking with one type of music and saying that all others are useless (and I guess to some extent, this is the same with emo, but none of you guys ever heard this from me) then they've lost sight of the purpose of music and are just trying to make themselves look cool.
Oh yeah and the drummer from Slipknot has some chops dude! He may not be "troo," but he's pretty damn good. Same thing for SOAD, who's also pretty borderline deathmetal (in their earlier stuff at least)

Nu-metal seems to be a term that gets thrown around a little too loosely these days(especially on blabbermouth comments...) For some nu-metal consists of anything that is "new" and has an americanized sound (vs european/nwobhm/etc)
It's really hard to categorize ALL music precisely. Some of you hardcore Death Metal fans would be surprised by what some of your heroes listen to while on tour or at home... most of the time it's completely removed from what they play. I'm not surprised... long touring isn't the nicest easyist thing to do... plus on a long tour you get fed up with hearing the same songs every night (yours, the other bands you're touring with etc, soundchecks...) and you need to get away somehow...
It doesn't matter what they listen to. If that's where they get inspiration to write the music you like... how can it be bad. I try not to "hate" any band, even if I don't like them... I usually try to focus on bands I do like.

If you think Atheist got their style from listening only to Death Metal than you need to check your history. The bands that have the diversity and progressive sound usually listened too other things rather than just Death Metal. Also, Death Metal was in its infancy, there was nothing else before it excpet for Thrash Metal. I was one of those guys who wouldnt listen to anything else but then I got stagnant and bored with it cause it all started to sound the same. The broader your inventory of music the better your perception is. Also System of a Down are some great musicians. I still cant help tossing in something like Beheaded and then right after throw in Paganini. As for other things he listens too, I cant say I would listen to it. But here's something you probably didnt know. The guys from Cannibal Corpse listen to the Goo Goo Dolls. Dont be closed minded, if you like something depite what other people say then you are being true to yourself.

HAHAHAHAHAH...... good one tricky dicky. But seriously, I still have Kreator, Dark Angel, and a host of thrash/death bands in my CD case....and was always into the heaviest shit of the day. But, at the same time, my drumming influence comes more from Neal Peart of Rush than any place else....with a bit of Hoglan mixed in. And it's the odd combination of Rush-style drums and other non-metal drum rhythms mixed with fast/death music that was a key part of the Atheist sound. Kelly, me, Rand, Roger all loved heavy/death/tech metal but we also loved other kinds of music as well. Corpseworm said it best that if you limit yourself to just one musical styling, you limit your creativity as well. I listen to lots of non-metal music....but in the new Gnostic you'll even hear a bit o' blasting....so....
Now, Corpseworm's love of Judy Garland is something that only he can explain :analsex:

Spot on.
Pretty much what i was gonna reply with.
i'd go further to say that if the Atheist guys didn't listen to a diverse selection of genres/sub genres of music, not only would they sound different to how they do, they may have never have even gotten together in the first place. :emot-eek:

thanks for your replays. i just wanted to say that some of you thought i that i didnt like the fact that the atheist band members listened to other types of music. i didnt say that, i just think that there is a lot better music out there, like some jazz, classical music, underground metal, etc. i just wast supprised by what i may call a bad musical taste, not that much with slipknot but mostly with system of a down. what i didnt like the least about that, is that those bands are marketing bands and not artistic bands.

Dont forget about that Kelly Shaefer did that thing with Neurotica a while back too. Besides, I guess you have to listen to both borthers of what you play to play it. I mean think about it, even if you don't like slipknot or system, at least it's still metal right (allbeit nu metal)? WOuldn't you feel so much better knowing they at least have SOME good stuff, as opposed to listening to, say, Usher?

What is real metal? Does it exist? From what I’ve gathered from the negative posts on this site, I’ve come up with an amalgamation of opinions that have manifested themselves into:
The Real Metal fan’s guide to: Is a Band “Metal” or “Not Metal”?
*Remember: this isn’t my list, this is YOUR list. The information in this list comes from YOUR posts, gathered over time. And no, there are no direct quotes on here morons. It’s BASED on what you’ve said. Sheeesh.*
This is based on a points system. It’s really quite simple. Anything GREATER than zero = metal. Anything LESS than zero = not metal. Let’s begin.
1. Only 150 people WORLD WIDE have even heard of the band = + 10 pts
2. The music itself sounds like someone put a beer keg out in a hailstorm, held a microphone out the window during a hurricane, threw a guitar down a flight of stairs and re-recorded the whole thing on a Sears tape player in a garden shed = +10 pts
3. One of the band members has short hair = -5 pts
4. The vocalist uses an emotion other than anger or hatred = -50 pts
5. One of said members is wearing something other than a black t-shirt, jeans, and work boots in their photos = - 10 pts
6. There is one actual identifiable word “sung” on the entire album (i.e.: clean vocals) = - 50 pts
7. The band makes the exact same album time after time = - 200 pts
8. The band DOESN’T make the exact same album time after time = -200 pts
9. The band is obviously influenced by other well-loved metal acts (aren’t they all? See 21, 22) = It depends. If the band makes money and becomes popular: - 500 pts. If the band goes nowhere and only plays to friends in their basement: + 100 pts.
10. None of the members make any more money off of their music in a given year than they would if they worked at a shitty, dead-end factory laborer job = + 100 pts
11. The members have to work at dead-end, shitty factory laborer jobs as well as play music just to make ends meet = + 500 pts
12. The band actually makes NO money at all and gets deeper into debt (and despair) with every passing day, just trying to bring metal to the world = + 800 pts
13. The band publishes its music by handing out burned CDs of their tunes from the back of a van, or selling exclusively at a Mom & Pop corner metal store that has 5 regular customers = +100 pts
14. They have a label deal with a major label = -500 pts
15. They have a label deal with Grace L. Fergusson Record Distributions & Storm Door Company = +50 pts
16. One member has dreads = - 20 pts
17. Someone in high school/college who ISN’T an anti-social loner has mentioned that they like this band = - 10 pts
18. Someone who likes this band has a girlfriend = - 20 pts
19. A girl who likes wearing metal T-shirts because they’re trendy once said she liked one of the band’s songs = - 5,000 pts
20. Someone, somewhere, said the music was actually catchy = - 10 pts
21. Somebody who doesn’t generally listen to metal bought the band’s CD = -1,000 pts
22. The band’s song is played on a radio station, ANY radio station = -100 pts
23. They have a video on a show that plays videos = neutral territory, no pts
24. The band was formed AFTER 1987 (when everything had pretty much been “done”) = -10 pts
25. The band was formed after 1995 (by which point everything had REALLY been “done”) = - 100 pts
26. The band tries really hard to be evil, writing songs with titles like “The Slaughter of Baby Jesus” or “Burn the Churches & Pass the Salt” = + 5 pts
27. The band sells some merchandise at Hot Topic = - 60 pts
28. The band sells merchandise, period = -50 pts
29. The band advertises their presence = -50 pts
30. The band has a myspace page = -70 pts
31. You can count your vertebrae while wearing three sweaters and an overcoat = wait, wrong list
32. Someone besides you knows who this band is = - 1,000 pts
Exceptions: any popular bands from the 70s/80s/90s that are generally considered to be real metal by overwhelming consensus. Exceptions to the exceptions: any popular bands from the 70s/80s/90s that are generally considered to be real metal by overwhelming consensus that don’t make the exact same music they did when they were 19 years old, have become rich, or have adopted one of the above negative behaviors because they’re 40 years old and want their kids to go to school and eat food.
Remember, anything else that strays from the constricted, stunted views of the Real Metal fan will be considered either not metal or simply “gay”. Listen to other music at the risk of being branded as such, with gratuitous use of the words “cock”, “fag”, and “ass” by someone with an obvious infatuation with those homoerotic concepts and the images they conjure up.
this kills me lol...

why not? be open minded! If the music is from the heart and played by professionals(mustn´t even be the case, look at nirvana) it´s great. Slipknot, SOAD, Korn these are all great musicians and they make great music! They all sound unique! That´s hard to find in the death metal scene. Only because they are named new metal, because they all sound different, it doesn´t mean that they are all the same. To say that would be totally ignorant. I like several "new metal" bands although I don´t listen to them often.

I agree Grindmaster.
There are several really good newer bands that are having some success.
I like Godsmack, SoaD, Linkin Park, and Korn.
