and what exactly is a "hyperblast?"

'Kay, in a nutshell: Mike DiSalvo (ex-Infestation; WS, ATYB) became a father and decided he had to take time out to concentrate on his family; Wacken 2000 was his last live performance with Cryptopsy. He and the band parted on good terms; Lord Worm said in interview upon his return, that he'd spoken with Mike a few times on the phone and that he totally respected his decision to be a dad.

Martin Lacroix (ex-Spasme, NSL) toured with band as the vocalist extensively, post ATYB. English was his second language, he needed to come up with the lyrics, and this was a serious hurdle. LW gave him lessons for nine months, but the band began to feel the pressure. With no hard feelings, the band relieved him of his duties. He is now in a US based death metal band Covenance, featuring ex Dying Fetus and Misery Index members.

And drummers on here can define it a lot more accurately... but to my understanding: The "blastbeat" term was first coined during the advent of Grind by bands such as Repulsion, Napalm Death and Carcass, and DM bands like Deicide and Death = faster than thrash/hardcore speed, the blast describes very fast hits on the snare drum.
The term "hyperblast" which emerged roundabout the mid 90's was used to describe this drumming style, but at markedly increased speeds. The term was used in reference to the emerging wave of more extreme DM bands, such as Kataklysm and Cryptopsy.

yes, especially this hyperfast band called kataklysm. I saw them live and I have to admit that it was shameful. Because the only thing "fast" were the gravity blasts, which in my opinion sucked anyway. The crowd still liked it :emot-roll The drummer of the Serenity in Fire Album was much better and played a cool drumsolo two years ago.

Kataklysm always sucked ass live. They just can't do anything right, all of them.

:emot-LMAO That's the funniest shit I've heard in years!!! Next you'll try & convince us all that you could survive on the scene as long as they have, and still have a relatively large fanbase worldwide :emot-LMAO :emot-LMAO :emot-LMAO

As for the hyperblast, you sound about right. However, Napalm Death and Carcass are playing grind beats, not blastbeats. Check out the Suffocation forum on this site, and read the thread "Found Mike Smith on Youtube!" (blastfamus is Mike Smith)

The difference between the two is explained there. :D

Cool Slayer, interested to check that out. do they touch on the distinction between death/grind blasts and the style used in Black Metal?

Tyler- Yeah, I don't mind a bit of the ol' Kataklysm. I dig "Mystical Gate of Reincarnation" from the Houde era and "The Prophecy" with Maurizio as the frontman. Your faves... and why.

That's because they write catchy songs that easily attract people without musical sense.

OH... Of course!!! How COULD I forget?!?! I mean, they're NEVER out of the Network Charts are they? I mean, their songs are so 'catchy' that even Desmond Child is jealous of their chart topping hits!!! :emot-LMAO

Check the Kataklysm Board, all the guys on there are fuckin' dumb. They think Kataklysm is better than Opeth. Of course morons like that would never realize how much this band sucks live.

So, let me get this straight... because a few people have the audacity to like a band YOU don't - they're all morons? :emot-LMAO You sound just like Dave Mustaine :emot-LMAO He thinks he's god & everything he says is practically bullshit as well...

I've seen them twice with different drummers and they (guitarist, singer, drummer) fucked up all the time on both occasions. Not to mention they fuck up on all of their albums (SIF and ITAOD excluded).

Oh dear... my - the shame of it all!!! What would their Parents say?!?! :emot-LMAO You mean to say these guys are human and occasionally fuck up??? There was me thinking that musicians were above mere mortals and could deliver pin-point precision music 24/7!!! :emot-LMAO

You'll probably deny all of this, but that's pointless, I am right.

Yes, your Highness, for you are our leader & saviour in this barren wasteland of mortality... :jerkoff1f

They're still quite nice guys and fun to listen to sometimes, though.

She looks ugly... but I'd throw the dog a bone out of sympathy... :limpwrist

Dude... you are sheer comedy platinum!!! Please stay... entertain us some more...

Wow Tyler. You just love exaggerations don't you?

He said all the member fucked up both times he saw them. That's not being "human", that's being not prepared for a live gig. Look at Necrophagist. I have not witnessed a fuck up during their live gigs, and Necrophagist plays some sick stuff. Sure, there might've been a bend mispicked, or a sweep not that clear. But they all stay on time, with the rhythm being perfect, and solos being 99.5% perfect. So please, don't defend the band by saying they make some mistakes cause they're only human, because if all the members fuck up, they're just not good live.

btw, when a band performs a gig, they're not supposed to be human. They're supposed to be musicians. Musicians with energy and flair though, of course! : P

Do I???

:emot-LMAO Christ... you could be Lichtbringer's support act when he does spoken word tours!!! :emot-LMAO

Oh, I'd say they're more than prepared for their gigs!!! What the fuck else are they gonna do when they roll into town 7-12 hrs before the show??? I'd say what they're probably NOT prepared for is the shithole they play their show in!!! Every night a band hits the stage it's in a different venue. Every venue has different PA systems (which either enhance or bludgeon your bands sound that night - regardless of how shit-hot your soundguy is), which more often than not is totally inadequate - which makes it difficult to hear exactly what you're playing, never mind concentrate on what the other members are playing in order to keep time!!! There's different lighting rigs (which don't exactly help when you're blinded by strobelights and trying to concentrate on blistering rhythms & solo's & tom rolls. The venue temperature & dry ice makes it more of a battle for the vocalist to perform at their best. This is only for starters... there's a million things that can go wrong on the night no matter how much you prepare for it.

I'd love to look at Necrophagist, but the bastards are doing everything possible to avoid playing the UK right now... I have saw a couple of live songs though, and I do know they're pretty bang on musically. However, I ain't about to start comparing bands here. Every band has their own level of strengths & weaknesses. We all know that Necrophagist are part of the elite. Kataklysm may play a different style of music, but that in NO way nullifies them and their efforts as a band. They merely appeal more to a different audience... an audience who aren't so :analsex: about every little note which doesn't sound 'as perfect as it does on the album'. I say if it's perfection you're looking for - stay home and listen to the Cubase/Pro-Tools enhanced CD and you won't be disappointed. The live show is a totally different environment & each is individual in experience.

I've saw Kataklysm play many times - in many different venues. In honesty, there was maybe 5% of those shows where some nights, no matter how hard they battled with the shit conditions - they just sounded sub par & totally unkempt. However, the other 95% of the shows... no one... I'll just repeat that - NO ONE could touch them!!! I'm pretty sure that Necrophagist have had their fair share of shit performances as well... it's just that you were lucky enough not to witness them. Do you really think that these Death Metal bands, who are up to their afterlife in debt with credit cards from touring expenses & sacrifice their homes, wives, children etc. - DON'T give a fuck about their music & how it's performed live & on CD??? :emot-LMAO

btw, when a band performs a gig, they're not supposed to be human. They're supposed to be musicians. Musicians with energy and flair though, of course! : P

:emot-LMAO Yeah... what's life if you can't delude yourself???? Enjoy Disneyland :emot-wave
