Hiiiiii
I like Black Metal but Death Metal is nice too!!
I think that Death Metal is more technical than Black Metal! more energitic!! And also more Brutal for sure!!!
( I mean by Death Metal: traditional Death Metal, Grind, Brutal and Technical Death)
But Balck Metal is richer emotionally, more hatred, more despair!!
It s also rich culturally, its lyrics evoke the subjects about ancient gods, Vikings, Satanism, Paganism, Nihilism, Nazism, AntiChristianity...
Musically, what do you think ??

I know that DM is more energitic & technic !!

If you ask this question on a DM band's forum such as this one, more people will enjoy DM. Ask it on a BM forum like Carpathian Forest, and people will say BM is better.

I know that but I want you to give me some reasons and advices !!
Not to say : - I like DM not BM
or - I like BM not DM
The Stillborn One

DM - better musicians, better arangements, better productions, more professionalism, positive attitude, funny guys, criticising messages, seriously great music!
BM - moody, hateful, sometimes darker than DM, minimalistic(even the avangard stuff isnīt really complex/ yes, I know Emperor), mostly grim idiots, partly racist
i totally agree! :kngt:

Mostly all of that can also be applied to death metal. Hate and simplicity are not exclusive to BM.
And for the record complex =/= better.
Azathoth
04-19-2006, 09:15 PM
Yeah, I agree for hatred but simple death metal is still much more complex than "simple raw" black metal. if you understand spiritual as a kind of "woodliking" feeling okay. But this is the only spiritual feeling BM offers you, there are also some space black metal bands but this is pretty much it. In death metal you can find bands like nile(egypt), origin(space), theory in practice(well..., space), morbid angel(ancient stuff), deicide (fucking satan)offering you different moods. And of course all the many others offering things like bloodlust, hate, problems of our societies and so on. DM is just fucking better :FIREdevil .
Again, more complex =/= better. If you think the only kind of spiritual feeling in black metal is this "folkish" feel, then you haven't listened to much black metal.

I love both. But I'm a bigger death metal fan, so I'll go with that. But I don't get me wrong, I love bands Like Carpathian Forest, Satyricon, Weakling, 1349, Xashur, Twilight, Leviathan, Emperore, Darkthrone, Dark Funeral, Marduk, Nargaroth, Burzum, Mayhem, Kult Ov Azazel,Ulver, Nachtmystium , Absu, and of coarse Immortal. But Death metal is just more appealing I think. Hell, even my cousins who hardly even listen to metal anymore loved the Misery Index CD I played for them in the car.

I personally love both. And I love the black/death crossovers too. Here's a list of bm bands I listen to, let it be known though that I listen to plenty more as well.
Abominant
Aborym
Absu
Akercocke
Anorexia Nervosa
Bathory
Beherit
Belphegor
Benighted
Borknagar
Burzum
Darkthrone
Dark Funeral
(OLD) Dimmu Borgir, and even some of the new stuff
Dissection
Emperor
Enthroned
Enslaved
Excommunion (Black/Death)
Immortal
Impaled Nazarene
Judas Iscariot
Limbonic Art
Ninnghizhidda
Old Man's Child
(OLD) Satyricon
Summon
Throcult
Windir
As for which I like better, I can't really say because I respect most kinds of music, and there's different things about each genre that I like, so it's hard to say. That's why we play black/death stuff when we jam.

I think the genres DM and TECH DM should be seperate. In any case, BM being "darker" is bullshit. The production might suggest ambiance, but the progressions aren't any different really. Take for example Opeth's album Still Life, as dark as any BM album, with nice and clear production.
I find most BM too raw, too unoriginal, too simplistic. Since when is being more primitive better? I guess that's the definition of "pure black". Some bands have it down good, though.
The "emotion" suggested in BM as being more apparent is something we call melancholy. It can be in nearly anything if you write it that way. Most over the top tech death metal sure as hell wouldn't be melancholic because it's energetic and would go better just to sound fun, however.

Sorry !!
But BM have a dark atmosphere !!
He's more primitif, that s its definition!!
But style good but not better than DM !!
About the voice BM, It s like a baby crying, it s like a man dying, it s not a vocal it s an instrument , it help to create the famous BM atmosphere!!
The two genres are polar opposites. Although I listen to more DM, I enjoy a bit of Marduk or 1349 just as much.

This thread is retarded. It's like asking "what do you like more, death or black? grind or thrash?" etc ....Stupid small minded questions. These types of questions make people think they have to choose between diferrent things, one way or another, and not try to see things in the real light and think for themselves. Maybe i'm talking things too far but this black vs death argument is pointless.

ehhh, dude, I wouldn't necessarily agree with that. You caught me right when I was listening to Still Life, and I gotta say, there is a HUGE difference between black metal, Opeth, aside from the production. Still Life is dark and heavy in it's own, unique way. After all, it's OPETH.

Raw? Yes. Simplistic? Many times. But unoriginal? Only if you listen to the third rate garbage BM bands being churned out nowadays. Darkthrone, Burzum and Immortal were very original in their time.

Take for example Mayhem and put it up against (it only seems fitting) Cryptopsy....

True, but Immortal sure can play faster than a lot of DM bands. Talk about original too.
I prefer DM but I like a lot of Emperor, 1349, Immortal etc, the big names really.

04-23-2006, 01:52 PM
I'd have to say Death Metal... purely because my CD collection speaks for itself. My Death Metal CD's outrank my Black Metal ones by far.
There's not that much Black Metal that interests me. Apart from the Emperor's, Zyklon's, Demon Burger's & Dissection's of the world (who actually take time composing something above the standard), the majority of Black Metal is just 1 finger powerchord, 4 pattern full song, sloppy blastbeat, style over content, can't decipher (or pronounce) the band logo without a street-map, Recorded in a Garbage Can, Generic Gobshite... There's maybe a handful of other bands that are really inspirational & write really well together, but they're few & far between & I really can't be arsed wading through the bullshit to find the pearls.
Some Black Metal fans elitist attitude sucks as well. Some of those Morons think you shouldn't listen to Death Metal if you're into Black Metal?!?! Fuck You All! I listen to what I fucking please! I may pick up a Malevolent Creation album before a Marduk album to listen to, but if I choose to listen to Marduk as well - I'd like to see any of you Mom's clown make-up wearing forest fairies, hiding your virginity behind your fake machismo of bullet-belts & studded wristbands TRY and fucking stop me!!! :emot-part
As far as I'm concerned, BOTH music styles are Extreme as fuck & are equally enjoyable. Two sides of the same Metal Coin. If you don't like it... fuck off & listen to Depish Mode & In Flames!!!

I think for both genre's, the term 'atmospheric' is pretty much defined by the use of keyboards (programming) & samples... take these elements away from the music & you merely have 'standard or generic' music.
Not exactly. Take Darkthrone or Burzum(obviously excluding the two keyboard albums and random all keyboard tracks) for example. Their music didn't have the majestic type of atmosphere that In the Nightside Eclipse had, but they still created a very desolate sounding atmosphere without major keyboard usage.

Without trying to sound egotistical, I'd have to quote myself here...
There's maybe a handful of other bands that are really inspirational & write really well together, but they're few & far between & I really can't be arsed wading through the bullshit to find the pearls.
When I mentioned Behemoth & Nile, it was only as reference as they are two bands that stand out in my mind that can acheive a perfect balance when it comes to atmosphere & use of keyboards & samples. Of course there's going to be some other bands who can manage to do this without, but they are VERY few and far between. The majority of bands out there depend on keyboards & samples to help them with their aura.
I don't particularly dig Burzum... never have & never will, so they can create a paper aeroplane for all I care. Darkthrone are a class band (as generic as they sound to me, they definitely have my respect) - although I don't personally hear them in the same atmospheric way you do. Which is fine, music is open to the interpretation of the listener and everyone has a different take on it. It doesn't mean to say either of us is wrong or right in this case. These bands just speak to us both differently. Maybe Darkthrone would be able to unleash the atmosphere to me personally if I saw them perform live. Like I previously mentioned, sometimes what you hear on the restrictions of a CD can sound so much more different and powerful when played live...

Hiiiiiii
In Brutality, there are Immortal the fatest band Black Metal, if you listen carefully to the Drum, you can hear Brutal Black Metal !!
I have no idea about concerts, because known bands don't come here, but I can hear them only on CD, so I enjoy their CD, Burzum or graveland can't make a good live because, it's a solo project !!
Immortal too, I don't think that their live are good, because the members are not the same every album, only Abbath can sound good in live !!
But Death Metal Bands would like to performe lives more than CDs !!
As I ve said before, they make a thechnical music !!
Death Metal, it's not a band, every one don't depend from others, every one do his best, to be the best artist, not the best band !!
It's not negative, because they are professionels, they try to make some technical compo !!
They don't think a lot to create an atmospher music !!
But, there are some bands, Death Metal or Butal Death Bands who try to make their Riffs more melodic (without use of keyboards), like new Kataklysm or Psycroptic !!
Another think, when I watch a live of Cryptopsy, I can't move, because, I shall listen to this huge music, in one song, different riffs, solos, Drums, the basist and the vocal !!
I shall inderstand the song, because every one work alone !!
But, Black Metal, in general there aren't solos, the drumer shouldn't play at a high speed, all the music is based on the mixture of the band, and riffs, and the other instrument : the vocal !

Same as every other DM fan then. The above are widely regarded, I would have said, as average to poor in general BM terms, and I agree for the most part. The ones with the least to say always say it loudest, and you sir, have shortlisted a very derivative and single-track minded bunch of BM bands. It's almost a benign credit that you have the sense to enjoy Absu.
I'll always take DM first, but neither genre is better or worse. They both have an important symptomatic message and great scope of sound to explore that is both made sublime and trivial by the few great bands and the majority of awful ones respectively.

i've never been into much black metal. i like immortal, old behemoth, mayhem, emperor, burzum, venom, and some others but i can't listen to it. some of the production qualities make it almost impossible for me to listen to the music. guitar tones sound like crap and are way too trebly for my tastes. the music isn't heavy enough for me. and i can't take the screams for too long.
death metal is just so fucking good. i can listen to almost any dm band and enjoy it to the fullest. the technicality, the heaviness, the speed, the different vocal styles, the different scenes around the world. and death metal bands have better song titles, album covers, band names, sicker logos, and i love music about killing people.

I see it as a way of saving My race, Beliefs and Culture.
I Honestly think it would be a good idea for me to keep my Thoughts to myself seeing as I see the world in a different Light.
But Nationalism, To me means, Saving My people and Culture. I do feel asthough Zionists run alot of the Government/media, So some May Call me a Socialist, But I dont fully see myself in that way. I'm highly opposed to multiculturalism and Different Race Breeding, I think each Race should have a Said Homeland and not be thrown into a massive MeltingPod.
I am not an advocator of Violence like a great deal of Neo-Nazis or Skinheads, I think Harming eachother shows Ignorance. And I think there would be less Crime if all races had a different Homeland.
And I dont go around Hating other races, I'm respectful to everyone, If you carry yourself like an Upstanding Citizen I'll put forth the effort to stand you, But if not, I think you should be Eradicated.
That is a sample of what I belive in but I dont honestly acre to talk about such a thing here, Hope this answered your Questions.

That is a sample of what I belive in but I dont honestly care to talk about such a thing here, Hope this answered your Questions.
That's exactly my opinion. :beerchug:

Black Metal's best (and one of the only good ones) albums is Dimmu Borgir's 'Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia'
Death Metal is more varied imo.

As a musician, in my personal opinion, black metal is a fucking joke. I cant stand it, I cant get over the ideologies associated with it, the shitty lyrics, the crappy guitar riffs, the shitty drums, everything.

I am a musician, and I do appreciate black metal.
As music is about expressing your emotion via instrument and black metal to me, is just raw emotion.

Agreed. To me Black Metal is more about the image and less about musical composition, structure, and overall talent.

The only black metal I listen to mostly is Emperor, Dissection and Ulver, so through my mind, black metal is FAR more than just image because those 3 bands own so many death metal bands (musically as well).

In no way am I bashing Death Metal, but I prefer a good BM song. I find that I pull more emotion from the music.

They don't really count, but The Meads of Asphodel and Taunusheim are two shit hot bands. Old Man's Child also seem to be never mentioned even though The Pagan Prosperity is one of the best Black Metal albums there is!
I'm also really curious, sorry to take a step away from the topic, but how does Borknagar's Origin album scale up to Ulver's KVELDSSANGER album? I can find the Borknagar album easy, but could anyone link me up with where to get the Ulver album?

Yet another abysmally moronic post concerning black metal.
