Sorry to post a negative thread in here so early in the life of the Alarum Forum; this isn't a personal attack on the band or anything, but I think I might anger some people in here anyways..

I just don't understand it. I've been recommended Alarum and I hear great things about this band from other people, but I really don't see what's so special about them. I've listened to "Velocity" and "Woven Imbalance" from their home page, and thought the bassist was good, and that guitar lead in Velocity is played pretty damn smoothly, but overall there's just nothing I hear that blows me away. I see why someone would like them and all, but I've read some reviews (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0006A9GHM/qid=1145158680/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/104-3216392-0775168?s=music&v=glance&n=5174 , the last one, http://www.willowtip.com/store/product_detail.aspx?id=3 , among others..) that claim they're the best thing since Cynic. That's a pretty fuckin high-ass bar to leap, and I don't think they come close.

So what is it specifically that you guys like about them? The guitars, bass,.. etc. If anyone could send me another song or 2 (PM me and I'll give an email addy), I'd appreciate it. Because honestly, I do want to get into this band, just so I can maybe hear what others are hearing and rid the confusion. Usually in the underground Tech-metal genre, if someone likes Cynic, they'll also like Atheist, Pest., mid-latter era Death, Spiral Architect, Spastic..etc, and this band is roped in, and I don't know why.

Listen to the whole cd. See them live. You'll hopefully understand why people have such a high opinion of them. Awesome musicianship, interesting songwriting and all these previously unnoticed intricacies that pop up every listen. Thats just my thoughts anyway, everyone has their own opinion, but i think it'd be better to listen to more than 2 songs before making judgement, especially with a band that has such a varied writing style.

Cheers.

I would say give them a few more listens, If you have only heard a couple of songs its really not fair to write them off like that.

I saw alarum live before I head them on disc, I think that may have helped me. After seening them live you really get into them big time.
