What's the problem?

ok, i just got a used (pretty much new) Dell dimenion 2400 and i want a PCIexpress type video card, but on dell.com it says i have PCI slots, nothing about PCIe.....

PCI and PCIe are 2 different things...you're going to need a new motherboard.
They're not too costly though, you can get something decent for $100

so then i have to get all new shit on the motherboard though right???
like the cpu and shit???
fuck.....

No, just as long as your CPU is compatible with the motherboard that you choose to buy. IE, don't buy a motherboard that supports intel processors if you have an AMD cpu, lol. It's not complicated, really.

What processor are your running on right now?

its a P4 2.4 GHz

im going to be honest....idk wtf is going on.....sint the motherboard the whole "thing" that is holding like everything together???
RyanFelix

Yeah the motherboard is the biggest piece of circuitry inside your Computer's case...Everything is connected to it. hard drive, video card, CPU...
Honestly I think you should of just had your own PC built to your specifications haha.
I don't know if processor speed is a factor with motherboard compatibility...Like I found some motherboards that are P4 compatible, but they're all for like 3.5ghz processors so i don't know if your processor will run with them.
Do you have any idea what Socket number your CPU chip is?

hahaha, no idea.....fuck.
idk, ill prlly save up and just build one, i got this one pretty much for free anyways
but thanks for the info!!!

Good plan. Every computer my family has ever owned has been built by us. I built the one I'm on right now last November and I love it. It's monstrous, haha.

Yeah, your old P4 is a piece of shit now. Your motherboard probably has an AGP slot, but not a PCI-e slot. Might as well get an 939-pin based mobo(AMD) with a 7900GT!!

AMD > Pentium
And the 7900 is out now?
I have a 7800GT and it pwwwns.

a nerd thread and i didnt say anything yet? well if you want my opinion if you have those prefabbed dells they are made from the ground up to not be expandable. what you want is AGP video. if your computer currently does not have an AGP slot, then you are going to be better off just waiting and buying a new computer alltogether than trying to upgrade this or then. end of story

AGP is years old. In a just a few years they won't even be making AGP cards anymore, bro.

for some reason I very much doubt that. And about the compatability of CPU's, i think its the front side bus that needs to be the same. Most BIOS can change those values. And yes. Get AMD. I have an AMD Athlon XP thats about 1.15 GHz and my games run smoother than my friends 2.3 GHz Intel. Its something to do witht he architecture and the instruction set being more efficient in AMDs.

ATI and Nvidia won't be making any more AGP cards; the best you can get for AGP is a 7800GS. AMD is going to start phasing out Socket 939, too... so you may want to wait to upgrade until their new socket thing comes out... M2 or something like that. That's if you want to go all-out, but 939 is probably going to be good for a year or two. I have 754 right now, and though it's older than 939, they're going to be making chips for 754 a year longer than 939. Ibuypower will probably have some good deals on mid-range stuff when M2 comes out.
Fuck, I'm a nerd.
