You have to not only keep your thrat open, but you've got to let air pass into the bottle to it don't block the beer. if it's a Glass, Just try and swallow as much as you can, as fast as you can...

if its a can, punch a hole in the top of the can. this is called a speedhole. it lets air replace the empty space in the can from less beer faster, rather than trading air for beer in the mouth-hole. it works like a charm.

no mason, shotgunning is a hole on the side and when you pop the tab air fills it faster and the liquid escapes faster. a speedhole is something that you use for normal drinking out of a can. it doesn't work as fast as a shotgun, but it works waaaaay good if you want to finish beer fast.

no, its not shotgunning, because shotgunning is when you put a hole in the side, and tilt it to your mouth and pop the tab. a speedhole is in the top by the tab. shotgunning and a speedhole are totally different, they just use the same concept. and with a speedhole you dont HAVE to drink the whole beer at once, you can if you want, but when you're shotgunning you do have to drink the whole thing :emot-chee .
