worth 500?
I'm sure that guitar is way awesome, but for a "player's guitar", I certainly wouldn't shell out $500 for it. But I'm sure a collector may think otherwise.
First of all, I find the S Series guitars without the AANJ (All-Access Neck Joint) to be awkward when playing the higher frets.
Secondly, the pickups are kinda shitty. But that's just my opinion. They have a good organic sound, but they are very low output.
Also, those 540's really are built very well, but there's nothing "custom made" about them. They just put that on the inlay for some odd reason and added oval abalone inlays instead of the usual pearl dots.
If it were me, I would budget another $150-200 and get a good S1520 Prestige model, or if you like the ZR tremolo, then you can find a 1620 or 1625 for around the same price. If none of that means anything to you, then you might try to find another 540 for less money. There's a 520 that has dual humbuckers intstead of the H/S/H pickup config, and the older models are pretty decent. I've seen a few really nice 470's out there, too. If you go with a 520, 540, or 470, you should be able to get a pretty badass one for no more than $400 delivered.
Hope that helps.

thanks for the info. i probably would throw new pickups
an s1520 is just seeming impossible to find for 700 dollars on ebay. haha
another random question.. why do people prefer orange cabs to mesa cabs if they both have v30s and all? [im playing a dual rec]
Because Orange cabs are built with the most thick-as-fuck birch and have a superior sound (to my ears, at least).

nothing too special, but it's all i need.
there's a small dent in my cab, maybe the size if a rice or something? not deep at all... it's bothering me because i'm a gear slut.
any tips on just popping it out. maybe a needle and just pluck it out?
also if anyone knows any good case companys that dont charge like 400 bucks for a case for my 4x12, that would be sick. thanks.

the store had them listed for 850 which was pretty sweet.
mesa cabs were 950 for some reason. i asked the dude why and he said "no idea" i played that ibanez with the puzzle peices finish on it. not sure what kind of model it is. but it was pretty sweet feeling. and word, these look pretty expensive. i guess ill request a quote.

I'm thinking about getting a 5 string bass, primarily for funk/necrophagist-esque bass playing. Any suggestions? I've tried an Ibanez 5 stringer, but I don't remember the name of the model. Pretty much anything is a step above what i have, but I don't really want to spend more than $600 if I don't have to. Also, any recommendations for a good bass amp (head and stack, no combo) that isn't too expensive? Again, I play more funk stuff, so something that is responsive and can push heavy fucking bass tone is what I'm looking for. I'm sorry that I'm kind of noobish when it comes to bass gear, I can play decently but I'm more oriented towards guitar anyways. Thanks a bunch.

I'm sort of in the same boat. Guitar player recently turned bass player. Always been a huge guitar gear head and I sort of felt lost when I needed to get myself a bass rig.
You could get a bolt on Warwick Corvette 5 string new for around 700. Thats what I play and enjoy.
Also, this may not be that worthwhile of information anymore, but guitar center stopped carrying their mesa bass line a couple months ago. I found a big block 750, a powerhouse 4x10 and a 1x15 all on clearance at a guitar center up here in minneapolis. Still ended up dropping quite a bit on the rig, but i ended up saving like 1200 in total. I don't know how much of a funk rig that would be though.

I was going to get that in the two tone burst but they discontinued it and the only place I could find that sells it is in Germany and it would cost me an extra $800.
But mine is a baritone. They discontinued the natural finish baritone as well so I had to settle for black.

Yeah man i wanted the 2 tone as well but couldnt get it in time. I wanted the black baritone but the site i got it from didnt have it. And it was the only site i could get it from because i couldnt afford the full payment at the time, so they billed in thirds. But the Natural is still gorgeous. I was going to put Lungrens in it but like bulb said, there would be a huge gap lol cause of the emg's housing is kinda big. But fuck me im satisfied with the emgs

I just ordered from Sam Ash and got it for $899 with free shipping and I did the 2 day air shipping which only bumped it up to $922.
I'm fine with e EMG 81-7's for now but if I can find a better 7 string pickup, I'll probably replace it. Plus I plan on getting a different finish on the guitar to spice it up a bit more than just plain black.

I just saved up enough for that, but I want to save up a bit more to replace the emg's with APC's. I'll probably put the emg's in my Ibanez Sz if they sound better (imo ofcourse) in the ltd before I switch it, than the stock pups in the ibanez.
I also want to save up for a great tube head, but I get too impatiant and will probably end up just getting the guitar, haha
EDIT:Also, which wins, Maxon OD-9 or the Ibanez Tubescreamer reissue?
od9 will give you a little more chunk, ts reissue will give you a little more djent

5150, nig! I really enjoy mine. A lot of people say that they can't get a good clean tone out of them, but those people are just afraid to use their EQ's in any way other than "Everything on 10".
If you want something that's a little more versatile, you might check out the ValveKings. A friend of mine has one, and I must say that I'm really impressed with the sounds he pulls from it - Clean or crunchy. There's something very "Marshall" about it, too... And that's another plus for me.

I don't think I would ever buy an 8. Maybe for the novelty value, but I just think playing an 8 string guitar is a bit over the top. People have been playing 6 and 7 for years. I see no reason to do any different.
But since you have it, how is the neck on that thing? I'm guessing it's like a 2x4.
8 isnt for everyone, but i really like it myself, keep in mind that when 7's were introduced most people had the same "novelty" reaction to them, and to this day a lot of people still dont want to touch them.
the neck is suprisingly comfortable and easy to play, and i didnt have trouble adjusting to it at all. the fit and finish on the guitar is really top notch, it even came set up perfectly for my style, so you will find nothing but praise from me haha!

Honestly i would fucking KILL for an 8. Ive been trying to get my hands on the 2228 for a while now but no luck. AIts funny cause i find myself tuning my 7s down to F and F# sometimes just to replicate it. 8's just have such a wider variety in playing style. Its endless.

How does that Sound Supressor work, any good? And whats the thing on the bottom cant tell?
at the bottom is just a power conditioner, same thing as a power supply. The Rocktron Super C is definitely the best noise suppressor I've ever used. You could literally have your gain and treble on 10 (not much recommended) volume all the way up on my amp and not hear a peep after you stop hitting notes.
It might cost $160 but its been good to me.

I would have to agree with that. Although I love 7s, everyone that I play with still says they're useless, so I guess it could be the same way with an 8. Although I'm still somewhat biased, I haven't ever gotten the chance to play one. So it is possible that it could change.

Very nice actually. Neck is nice and thin like i like it, action is great. Pickups actually sound pretty damn good imo. Trem, even though i never owned one, i love already. Ive tried about everything with it and stays in tune.
The body, being mohogany, i love because its very thin and very lightweight compared to the 607. Alot easier to play standing ill say. I love the 5 way switch, there are endless amounts of options to be done with it. 22 frets but it honestly doesnt matter to me, because tbh i dont really remember ever using those last 2 much . All in all GREAT guitar.
Incendius
11-29-2007, 03:27 AM
But i am having issues with the Trem. Probably because i never had one and have no idea what to do with it.
I know how to tune it and etc, but im having this like unwanted vibration, and noise when i play notes, even single notes. To put this in a picture, instead of hearing a crisp clean sound like ______________________ i get /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\, and the wave gets faster and faster as the note holds. Even if i got back and forth to different notes, every one of them is this buzzing/vibrato sound. I suppose i need to raise the bridge somehow, make adjustments? Im just not sure wtf to do really. And im tuned to G#C# standard.
Saddles are tight, nothing seems loose. But the funny thing is, i had this thing in standard tuning and i didnt even notice the noises until i down tuned it to G#C#Standard. Could it possibly be that because the strings they put on this thing are pretty damn light. I also notice it does it alot more when i do slow bends. Keep in mind its mostly the bottom 4 strings that do this.
your pickups may be too close to the string

Dude hows the 8 workin out for you?
I'm seriously considering buying an RG7321.. its only £300 (about $600 but guitars seem to cost more in here in the UK) and it is pretty much the cheapest 7 string going. I don't want to spend too much incase the 7 turns out not to be for me, so this seems like the ideal purchase. I was just wondering (because i know you're a 7 guy) if you, or anyone else, has had any experience with this guitar and what you make of it.

I don't want to spend too much incase the 7 turns out not to be for me, so this seems like the ideal purchase. I was just wondering (because i know you're a 7 guy) if you, or anyone else, has had any experience with this guitar and what you make of it.
...also 80s japanese squire strats ftw!!!
The 8 is fucking amazing man, i love it to death.
As far as the 7321 goes, great guitar for the price, and for someones first 7. Great construction and sturdy as all Ibanez. But its actually the the second cheapest 7. The schecter Omen 7 is maybe like 50-100 $ cheaper. Both great guitars for the money ill say. And if you do turn out to like 7s, you can always pickup swap that bad boy and make it sound beast. That or buy a more expensive one lol. But i do recommend that Ibby as your first 7.
Also if you want elitist advice, check out sevenstring.org. Its everthing youll need to know. They are ALL cool guys and will help you better than i can
EDIT: Another comment on the 8. Man most people when they go from a 6 to 7, they only want 7s from there on out, and no more 6's. Ill tell you the same thing with the 8 string. Now all i want is 8 strings but of course this being the only 8 in production, ill have to wait to see what NAMM has in store. Same with the neck too. 6s strings felt like a stick after playing a 7 for too long. Now the 7s feel like a stick when playing the 8 too much. I love it. And i love the tone of this thing, no mud or anything. Im actually liking it more than my SC607

I bet shredding on an 8 is pretty confusing after having played a 6 for so long. I have a hard enough time with 6 string sweeps let alone 8 string runs. That is a badass guitar though.
I figured I would post this and then search the forum for the answer and take my licks later, but everybody likes talking about engls so... I have heard the powerball in action and had to reattatch my melted face to my head but is anybody familiar with the Invader 150? I am looking into buying either a powerball or an Invader. Yeah I know, a $1000 difference but I want versatility man. I have a Mesa Dual Rec Trem-O-Verb 100 combo that is powerful but I just can't get the face melting tone out of it. The cleans on the Mesa are better than I have heard out of any amp, they hit you square in the chest and don't pop or fuzz. I really want to recreate that clean but I also want to be able to incinerate kittens from a mile away with the metal tone. Blue's, vintage screamin' tubes, cleans, 80's metal and Necrophagist sweeping tones, high end and low end- I want it all. The mesa just won't express pinch harmonics the way I want. Words of Wisdom?

Sounds to me like you just need to push your tubes a bit harder. Do you have a switch on your amp that will allow you to play at lower wattage?
If that's not the problem, you could definitely benefit from a DS-1 or a Tubescreamer.

I've got a Damage Control Demonizer that does pretty well with gain, its a pure tube preamp distortion pedal, but it takes away from the punch of the amp. There is a bias select for el34's and 6l6's I have 6l6 tube's in the amp and I've heard that you can switch the bias up at the sacrifice of the tube life and it breaks up the tubes differently but Mesa thinks alot of their tubes. There is also a rectifier select that switches from silicon diode to the tubes but the silicon diodes pick up NPR pretty readily and they don't break up as low as the tubes do. I thought of buying the reissued TS-1 tube screamer from Ibanez, but at a buckseventy they don't give them away.

Dude, if you can get better tone and more punch from a hotter bias, then by all means do it. Fuck tube life, and don't feel like you have to remain slave to Mesa's tubes. The general consensus from Mesa owners is that a tube switch is mandatory.
Anyway, don't put much worry into the tube life. Even at the hottest bias you can cook up, you SHOULD be able to get at least six months of everyday use out of your tubes. I say that if you can afford a Mesa, then you can afford beef up that amp and shell out a little extra cash here and there for backup tubes.
PS: Pardon my lack of proper terminology.

ive been looking at:
Emperor cabs http://www.emperorcabs.com/HOME2007.html

Orange ppc412
and other oversized cabs with v30s
id like to keep the price of the cab under 800 if i can. so the orange would have to be a used find.

but anyway no man i have 2 guitars and only owned 4 in my lifetime. Not to mention my rig only consists of a Peavey Valveking 212 combo, boss gt8 and a Boss NS-2. But to answer your questions. Yes i am both a hobbyist and a guitarist, or maybe somewhere in between. No videos of me playing because i can care less about showing off to the internet. No i dont have any recordings because i dont know shit about it or how to do it, nor do i have the equiptment for it. I dont take lessons, and i am self taught while being fairly decent. I am not in a band because well im pretty sure if you lived in NJ you wouldnt wanna be in any of these local bands either. I play for my own personal satisfaction and enjoyment. Although i do write some killer shit in many different genres, i just have the time or knowledge to record.

I have been thinking about getting one of those Avatar cabs. Apparently, the Avatar guy takes popular cab models and builds them to the same specs (in terms of construction materials. They have a "contemporary" style, which is a lot like the orange cab construction. Then they have the "vintage" style, which is a lot like the Bogner cabs, and then there's another one that is based off of the fender style.
Anybody ever try these cabs? Nothing but great reviews as far as I know...

Its a TC Electronic G-System, it's a multi effects floor board, it has audio loops to control stomp boxes, and a relay based amp switching system. The two pedals are EB Jr. Volume pedals setup to be expression pedals that control whatever parameter the patch calls for.

I'm starting to move the music i play in a far more hardcore/metal direction, and need a distortion box of some sort that can give me awesome crunch, (don't kill me) chugs, and good leads. Hey guys. I can't decide whether I should buy a delay/reverb twin pedal or both of them separate. I've never bought any effects pedals before so I'm trying to get as much advice as possible about them before I spend money. I'm playing an Ibanez s520ex through a Peavey Envoy 110 amp.
I'd either get this: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Boss-RE-20-Space-Echo-Delay---Reverb-Pedal-104479621-i1322800.gc
or these two:

space echo can get a lot more interesting. rather than just using an okay reverb pedal and a digital delay. but i recommend going for the DD20 if youre going to spend around 250. itll mimic the echo pretty well with some work [probably not as "spacey" but a good tape like delay. but you can always make it however you define spacey]plus it will give you a much better variety, but lack reverb in some cases.
try that space echo though, you can get some awesome sounds out of that.
if you go for a reverb pedal. look at some electro harmonix stuff

Sounds to me like you have the delay running in front of your amp? If so, you need to stick it in the loop so that your gain doesn't boost the signal of the delay. I don't know what kind of amp you're running, but I would imagine that it has an effects loop...

Save an extra 200-300 and try finding a used roadster. I went from a dual rec to a roadster and it basically sounds like the old two channel rects. plus it's versatile as fuck.. and the clean channel is glass.

Yeah I wouldn't buy another Triple Rectifier after playing a bunch of other ones, I guess I just got lucky with a great sounding one. Also I'm wondering if it's because I got mine directly from Boogie.
Roadsters are the shit, can't wait until I can afford one.
Yeah, I was worried about the inconsistency with Mesas.
I have been wanting a new roadster since I first heard about it, but I figured if I were to go for an amp that expensive, then I should get an Engl Invader. It is, for all intensive purposes, the same type of amp, similar versatility, but I just can't get over the voice of a Mesa.
Have you played a roadster personally? What's best about the Roadster over its big brother, the Road King? I've read the Mesa description about 12 times for both of them, but it just doesn't translate like first hand experience.
I have eeked out every bit of gain from my Tremo and have added a TS-808 for the punch and high gain liquid attack, but it just doesn't provide what I'd like. It's really close, but not quite there, and even with the active loop controlling the channel volumes, my cleans are still overdriven a bit, it's frustrating.
Thanks, for the insight.

Yeah I've played a Roadster a bit and it's got the Mesa voicing that sounds amazing for big chord stuff and it can also be set to have that "mechanically tight" processed sounding mid-range and low-end with the use of a tube screamer. As for the Road King it's a completely different amp than the Roadster, it's got more features(like setting particular wattages and tube assignments per channel) nothing I would need or use in any musical project I'm pursuing, but it's a good rock amp.
But the ENGL Invader is sick too, it's got a little bit of that Mesa warmth and punch but it's also got the hyper-processed sounding tone you'd expect from ENGL. I'm a Mesa man but if they didn't exist I would definitely own a Invader 100.

anyone have that isp decimator g string thingermaginger?
roadster and roadking are basically the same amp. except the road king allows you to switch between el34s and 6l6s for each channel. i think that's what progressive linkage means.? road king version 1 doesnt have the lonestar clean that road king II and the roadster have. which is probably my favorite clean sound.

I've only been playing for a couple of months, and I need an amp. I've been practicing without one. I was going to by a Roland Cube, but the local Guitar Center has a used Peavey Ultra 112 for $225. Is this a good amp? Is it a good deal? Is it a good amp for me at this low level of playing? Do the 15-watt Cubes sound alright?

You think so? 5150 block lettering are usually pretty prime amps. I have a Madison as well, which is cool for now too.
I really want a Cornford amp to be honest. I'm not really into heavy distortion amps. I prefer light gain with enough to pull the pickups and enough clarity to do suspended chords with the distortion of the amp without losing the nuances.

Definitely think about getting an EQ, specifically the MXR 10-band, which is an excellent unit. Being able to tweak your tone to that degree you can really get the best out of your amp.
Some people swear by the BBE Sonic Maximiser range as well. I'm not much of a fan, but others love them.

Think of the MXR as a tweaking tool - EQ your amp as close to the sound you'd like as you can, then fine-tune it with the 10-band.
A trick I like is to set up the amp with loads of treble and presence, then use the MXR to cut the extreme high frequencies, so that you get the clarity and punch, without the icepick highs.
The NS-2 is solid, but if you can, try and get an iSP unit. The standard Decimator is excellent, the G-string pedal is even better yet, and the ProRack G is the ultimate. All are completely transparent, and very non-intrusive.

I'm still playing around with my setup, but for the moment, I'm using it for my lead sound on top of the amp's gain. I set it to 0 gain, level around 3pm, and tone around 11am. Adds crazy sustain and fluidity. I'll point out that mine isn't a stock TS-9, it's a Keeley mod+, and is wayyy smoother than your average tubescreamer.
Not sure how Paul Waggoner uses his I'm afraid. Adding an OD, set to clean boost, can really tighten up your drive sounds, and give you tons of punch and aggression. Worth trying out.

In the song Future breed machine, at the start the guitarist has this thing that he blows into (loooks like a dunlop talk box) but its not. Bascially what it does is act like a volume pedal. He plays a note, and when he wants the sound to come out hell blow into the tube. So what he does is plays the two notes and then lets them ring out, while blowing into the tube in a rythm. So it sounds like its cutting off. Its awsome.

His stuff is reportedly excellent, but he's going through a very bad time having split with his wife, and being ridiculously overworked, so he's stopped doing pedal mods. He may start up again at some point, and he's very open with his designs and how to do it yourself should you be feeling adventurous with a soldering iron.

Nolly, i know you do sikth covers aswell.
I dont know any of the tunings they play in man, but i know one of them is drop A flat
But like, when youve dropped the bottom string to A flat, what is the rest tuned to ?
And what are the other tunings? for like scent of the obscene, flogging the horses etc

SikTh used drop Db for everything on Trees..
On Death of a Dead Day, they use Eb standard on Flogging, Eb Bb Gb Db Ab Ab on Bland St, Summer Rain, Sanguine Seas, and Part of the Friction, and drop Db on the rest.

Mate, The guys from SikTh showed me them in person, so I'm absolutely 100% completely undoubtedly sure that it's Eb Bb Gb Db Ab Ab, where the bottom string is a full octave below the 5th string.

Yeah, just to let you know im not tryin to be a dick or nuffin man
But, EBGDAE, the fifth string is A,
They tune the 6th string a full octave down to drop A flat, so a full octave and a lil bit more like
Watch the video's of them playin bland street at the institute man, that tuning is drop A flat on the 6th string.
As for the other5 strings im not sure what the tuning is

Soz nolly, i just read.
What you actually said to be E Flat standard was what i was thinkin of anyway. What you actually said is drop Ab, or Eb flat standard with a drop A Flat,
haha my mistake man
Cheers dude

people might diss this amp for it's price or whatever.. but i owned one before my roadster.. the clean isn't great.. but the distortion channel is actually really nice. throw and OD in front of it and it can be a pretty badass sounding amplifier.

Honestly, of all the amps in that price range I've played...Peavey's always sounded the best. The only complaint really is the clean isn't "crystal sparkling" clean, but the amp is durable, has great gain, and an overall value for the price.

This is exactly what I wanted to read; honest opinions. I played on one before, but I kind of liked the clean tone I got out of it. I think I know what amp I want now. :emot-nod:

I think I'm set on the Fender Stratocaster Delux HSS Olympic Pearl w/Rosewood fretboard. I don't really shred anymore, just looking for something with a lot of tone options that plays well. Is there any guitar in that price range that I should check out before I buy it?

I like the thin-ness of the S guitars but I don't like the rounded top. That's why I really want a blackmachine.

I always thought that S Series guitars were the shit. But I never REALLY appreciated my S Series guitars until I started playing/gigging a Les Paul Standard. I don't have the best back in the world, but having a LP over my shoulder for 8 hours at practice can be a motherfucker.
I always gig with the Gibson, but for some practice sessions, I'll take my S520. It's a lot easier on a dude with scoliosis.
Another thing that I have grown to respect about the S is how well it can adjust to different tunings. I have a hard time finding six-string guitars that can tune as low as we do (down to C with a dropped A#) that have a prayer of a proper setup. But I was able to set up my S520 by myself, and I achieved excellent intonation and playability.
Plus the neck is just so goddamn fast.
