Hey guys! I was listening to "Unquestionable Presence" (the entire album) today, and I was wondering what kind of equipment, specifically guitar, amps, and effects, were used for recording? I also noticed that the solos had a very synth-like sound, how'd you guys (Kelly Shaefer and Rand Burkey) get that sound? I kind of thought that you guys set up your amps with less distortion and that you guys used the neck pick up for that "cleaner" kind of sound, but I know there are other factors such as what type of guitar is being used, type of pickup, type of neck wood, etc. I'm also wondering if it's possible to get the kind of vibrato that Rand Burkey used with a right handed guitar with a normal setup (for those who didn't know, he played with an upside down right handed guitar, but the strings went from thin on top and thick on bottom)? Thanks ahead of time for answering my questions.

when I did the FAQ on the website I was thinking about doing an Equipement used section, with past and present. Still a possibility, just need to beat the information out of the guys :P

I don't think water would be enough... we'd have to use all the elements lol

Rand always had, and still does, a Gibson Flying V guitar. Kelly's......I'm not sure what he used on U.P. he had a few guitars over the years. Both played through Mesa Boogies....I'm pretty sure...during the recording. The drums were a Yamaha recording series kit.... best kit I ever had... I wish I still had it.. though now I'm playing Mapex drums and they have a killer sound too.

Hey thanks for asking but, we did not use ANY synths on any of our records. We had mesa boobie mark 3 heads, with marshall cabs, Tony used SWR heads and cabs, and an ibanez bass, and josh used DW drums on the elements record, and flynn used Tama I think? No synths except on the intro to No truth, we took rands guitar through a simulator, he played the part, but the sound was transformed intro strings, it was sweet back then, but there are so many more possibilities these days, but keep in mind, and this is SUPER important while listening to metal before 1995, there was no pro tools , all drums were live and there was no cheating and editing unless you did it with a razor blade. ok cheers for now Kelly

Hey thanks for asking but, we did not use ANY synths on any of our records. I guess I wasn't clear in my description. What I meant was that your solos were so fluid sounding that it sounded like a synth. But you more than answered my question and all I can say now is thanks and I can't wait to see you guys come to LA (if you plan on coming).
