I'm looking to buy a new PC, strictly dedicated for recording. I cannot afford a G5 at this time, so I'm looking to see what would be a good subsitute.

I'm looking into maybe using a Presonus Firepod. I read that it comes with Cubase. I'm also open to suggestions on different programs. M-Audio, Sonar, Pro-Tools. I also want to be able to use Drumagog for sound replacement.

Would an AMD Athlon processor work with an external hard-drive added as well?

Just give me your thoughts.

Build a PCm with a little bit of your own research you can learn enough to build one, it really isnt that complicated. Def. go with a firepod Ive had mine for like 9 months and it rules, I upgraded the version of cubase for more options. It will run the VST version of drumagog. I've heard AMD isnt at good with audio as a P4 is. Def get HT technology and if you can go dual core its really worth it and most new programs are able to use all its power now. AMD will work with any external harddrive as will any computer. Def. build a computer cheaper and you get to choose what you want. Hope that was some help.

What sound card would you recommend?

I'm going to be building a computer in a few months, mainly to be used for recording.
I've heard Sound Blasters aren't really all that good.

you're going to need at least 2GB memory. AMD will do fine for recording but yea get one with hyper transport (i think all the newer ones have it anyway). For parts try www.newegg.com and check out the reviews for stuff.

Im using an ASUS motherboard with 5 PCI slots. 3.2 P4. 1.5 gigs RAM. 3 internal IDE hard drives. I use a special sound card for mastering and then I have an M audio card which is really stable. I think AMD should be fine now, check into it though. I can mix about 35 tracks at 24/48 in Nuendo with whatever plugs I need.

If youre not experienced building computers, have it built for you. Too many setup hassles.
