After listening to Iced Earth, I'm thinking that they have one of the best guitar sound for Rhythms. I'd like to know what most of you like in terms of guitar sound.

And Flynn, I said nothing about tuning.

I really dig the sound from those Caparison guitars that Chris Amott uses in Arch Enemy. Maybe it's the way that Sneap produced their albums but they seem to have just enough crunch but also velvet solo's. Strapping Young Lad sound awesome as well with the ESP's they use.

I personally use a Washburn 7 String (fixed bridge), Seymour Duncan pickups. I also have a Jackson Dinky 6 string. You really have to work a Jackson, but the riffs you can grind on them are thick, chunky & powerful as fuck. They're great guitars for sharpening up your chops. Whereas, the Washburn has a pretty universal sound and is probably one of the easiest guitars to adapt to.

You also can't whack a Digitech RP7 Valve Pedalboard for all your expressive needs.

I don't know if I have a specific guitar tone that I like most... just ones that suit the music. But some bands whose tones I love would be Emperor (specifically Anthems), Cryptopsy, Nile and Morbid Angel...

Hm, I think I'd have to go by sub-genre, since death, thrash, black, you name em, all have different sounds that I'd regardd as ideal. One cardinal sin and definite no-no in my book, however, is the Dual/Triple Rectifier sound of so many nu/emo bands.

Thrash: Mesa Boogie MkIII with Jacksons, like Heathen. On the other hand, I've always had a Nasty Ronnie-sized weak spot for Nasty Savage's sound.
Death: Chuck (Stealth/JCM - such a great sound with such simple means) and Muhammed (Necrophagist). More technical stuff generally benefits from a cleaner sound, and in that sense I like (my personal favorite guitarist) Ron Jarzombek's work with WatchTower and Spastic Ink as well.
Black: I think I'd go with Dimmu Borgir here, but it's not my favorite kind of metal. Emperor would do, too, but most of those bands sound too much like a blur to me.
Power: Nevermore would be my favorite (Jeff and Steve are awesome axemen) in the genre, but the Dual Rectifier doesn't sound nearly as good as it should to do their sound justice. Iced Earth is a good pick for sound (boring to me, otherwise, though). On a slightly cleaner side, I like the sound of Powermad.

Anything with Chris Poland. This guy's leads rule, but his rhythm sound from the metal days was tight and damn-near perfect.

I've been listening to Iced Earth a lot over the past few days... and I agree with you man. Jon has a fucking deadly tone for rhythm!. Its so Ballsy. Espessically on the Dark Saga album.

Rhythm - Jon Schaffer (or however you spell his name)
Lead - Marty Friedman

SRV got a great sound from his guitar.

Metal-wise i think Gary Holt has pretty much got it down

Above had a mention of Chris Poland, which was spot on.

I like Evergrey from In Search of Truth to Recreation Day.

All Coroner, all Zero Hour.

Iron Maiden-Somewhere in Time.

That's all I can think of right now. Maybe even Forbidden's Twisted into Form.

Foreign Objects!!

They're not very well known (a band when they were in high school, no steady bassist and moved on), but everyone should check them out. 2 albums-The Undiscovered Numbers and Colors EP and Universal Culture Shock. James Murphy does most of the solos on UCS. If you happen to download Delve (keyboard classical thingy) or Big Boy (Sparks cover), don't judge them by those songs, they're completely different from their normal song. Chemical Control, Planetary and Disengage the Simulator are my favs, with bad ass guitar tones.

Your hearing is shot. He said "Crotchgoblin". You can find it in the phonebook as "Gobblin' Crotch".

Nope, I love the crunchy low ass tuned sound.
VR might not be the example, but I'd be happy to have a similar sound.

You wanna talk about a guitar sound - check out RUSCHA - former Resurrection guitarist Charley Haines' new band. Guitar and drums, nothing else to get in the way.

Marty Friedman's guitar sound on the Megadeth albums "Rust In Peace" & "Countdown To Extinction."

I'm a huge megs fan. Just looking at which Gigantour show to fly out to!
All megadeth sounds have been fine by me. I do like the last albums sound, but there's something about the earlier stuff like Rust in Peace that's more 'raw' and less processed.

Spiral Architect, Aeon Spoke and Cynic all have amazing sounds.

It's a tough question to get a handle on as it's very subjective.

As a guitarist myself, I'm forever changing my settings! Just got back from a rehearsal in the most sweaty studio in central London!!!! I think I've sweated out a whole person... but I was happy with my tone. And all i used what their stock Valvestate Marshall 250 and a cheap Daniello (Spelling??) Overdrive pedal for a bit of boost. worked like a charm. :)
