Okay, this might be misconstrued as xenophobic but after telling someone on the Aborted board what the name of "that Emeth dude" was, it got me thinking with my meagre knowledge of French-like names. I know names aren't meant to be translated into another language, but it's common knowledge that the heritage of a name comes from the history of people who've used it (ie. the common English name 'Smith' being from the type of person who'd run a metalworks such as a blacksmith or something).

I know the guy that used to play for Chelsea had a name which translated into English as Frank The Beef (Frank LeBoeuf)...

I've just now realised that Matty's name, if my crap knowledge of French is true, means 'Matty The Bridge' (perhaps 'Matty Of The Bridge'...).

like i said, no real point to this, just thought I'd mention it.

Feel free to ignore this :D

yes this true...

"Emeth" is taken from the old HEBREW language. It means 'truth, life,...' as an opposite of "Meth" which means 'death,...' Google something like -Golem Myth Emeth- and you'll find whatever you want to about the psychotic meaning of Emeth... and why it fits our extreme belgian sickness so well haha

Dude that's fucking odd....

i don't know if you knew (or you do know and you're deliberately being obtuse), but an 'emetic' is something (medicine-wise) which is given to someone in order to make them throw up or vomit.

Main Entry: emet·ic
Pronunciation: i-'me-tik
Function: noun
Etymology: Latin emetica, from Greek emetikE, from feminine of emetikos causing vomiting, from emein to vomit -- more at VOMIT
: an agent that induces vomiting
- emetic adjective
- emet·i·cal·ly /-ti-k(&-)lE/ adverb

Therefore i presumed that 'Emeth' was an elaboration / extended version of that word.... coincidentally explaining the "Extreme Belgian Sickness" thing down the 'Insidious' shirts!

how odd.

Haha, I always thought it meant what Surt said. And yes, that is a weird conincidence isn't it?

Yea I know the word emetic, but that doesn't have anything to do with EMETH. It wouldn't be emeth if the connection would be so obvious hahaha, we are not a "gore" band. Extreme Belgian Sickness actually refers to the meta-physical and psychotic concept in the lyrics.

Mind is a disease of semen
Consciousness a symptom of disease
Thoughts the embodiment of sickness
(taken from Manifestation)

On the new record I took this to the next level, so I would suggest you'll read the lyrics when you get Reticulated :emot-head

Ps also Extreme Belgian Psychoticism doesnt sound half as good as Ex.Be.Sickness.... we are still a death metal band

heh...

well granted now I look back in hindsight it does kind of stick out a bit as an anti-reason for the name, as I don't think anyone could hardly say Emeth are a generic gore band.

To my detriment I have to admit I've never really read the lyrics properly, by and large because the music is intense to the degree that you (or at least I) have to/ prefer to concentrate on soaking all the different nuances up as they happen.

That told me! lol :beerchug:

So even though the thread started out pretty meaningless, it's actually come a little way to some value... just about.
