Carphanaum are ridiculously technical in an awesome way, but I just can't fucking stand the hardcorish vocals. Those vocals deserve to stay in Trivium, the shitty side project. I wish they had more growling, like a 50-50 split.
Your thoughts?

i love the vocals... i hate trivium
there's something with the sound the whole that doesn't sit for me... firstly I totally agree, need some growls (personally, i reckon mids and even screams are cool if they're done in moderation..esp by a dude who can growl his nuts off
But dun you also recon that the guit sound n production is a bit ... i dunno... middy and hardcorish?

very harcorish, but in the style of tech death i dont mind. I mean, that cunt can play. I just built up an appreciation of it by looking at the tabs and just being fucked over by the speed :)

I like that their vocals don't sound like every other tech death band out there. I think Matthew, shitty as Trivium is, has a good scream.
Martyr...now THERE's an awesome technical death band who IS nearly ruined by the awful vocals. Daniel is such an amazing guitarist...isn't that good enough for him? Fuck, Martyr should just be instrumental...

Martyr have awesome vocals.
yeah!! why do people hate on Dan Mongrain's vocals? I will never understand that. Martyr is one of the best metal bands ever.

we think the weakest part of Capharnaum (or Dolph! as it were) is the vocals
same thing with Smartyr... we can easily handle it though, but Danny sounds a bit too constipated, that's all

I hate matt heafy. Hes right up there with bam margera on my hate list. I hate the sound of capharnaum with the Heafy vocals.

I can't listen to Martyr due to the vocals. So fucking annoying. Each to their own.

to be fair. Carphanaum is Matt's side project and Trivum is his main band not the other way round.
I like the vocals. Obviously i like the more death metal growls more but the other vocals are still good in my opinion
I love this vocals.
And i also love growling vocals in general..

I think growling is for deeds of flesh, nile, and suffocation which are all awesome bands
but capharnaum is unlike any other tech metal band and i personally think growls just do no fit in with capharnaum's music, i dont think there was a better person for the job than matt
I reckon they should boot Matt out, and dig Suceof to do main vox.
Bring back Mongrain!

The only person I would want to replace Matt really is Chalky from Psycroptic. Man, that guy owns every mother fucker in the world.
...That's a good idea.
Should PM about it.

Trivium can lick my scrotum but I love Matt's vocals on Fractured! He has a good range, and doesn't sound like every other run-of-the-mill death metal vocalist. Matt's voice is powerful as hell, I like how he actually lets some VOICE come through rather than just being the same growling shit all the time.
Get off of his ass, people.
How the hell does he have range? He just does that some hardcore yell?
Those death growls aren't Heafy either, that's Jason Suceof.

And I think that opinion is purely ad hoc. If Capharnaum had come out with a growling vocalist you'd have damn well defended them anyway. Truth is, what makes them different is the hardcore vocal style, but different isn't always better. The only other thing that makes them 'unlike any other tech metal band' is the fact that there aren't any other tech metal bands i've heard trying to ape Martyr so obviously and fail. I know they share a guitarist but a side project is a pretty pointless place to try and do the same thing you were doing anyway. Whahey, the future of death metal is lacklustre imitation!
I don't understand why Capharnaum exist really.... a poor man's Martyr with really lame vocals... guh? They also can't seem to write songs longer than two and a half minutes and keep them coherent; Icon of Malice is such a mess it's ridiculous.

I don't think Heafy's vocals are that bad on Caphranaum. They are deffinetly more brutal then his on Trviums. I see where your coming from though. It kinda sucks that Heafy is in it but he's also in Trivium... Trivium is so bad. But whatever, if Jason likes his vocals then as long as they still make music thats good.

Capharnaum is one of the few bands that can make the technical death metal style interesting. Fractured is tech-death as it is meant to be played: incredible musicianship, unconventional song structures and rhythms, and memorable riffs, all the while retaining an aggressive death metal aesthetic. There aren't many technical death metal bands that can keep you headbanging along uncontrollably and screaming every word (or at least just screaming incoherently), and that's what sets Capharnaum away from the pack.
Although many death metal fans will disagree with me--and some will wish me bodily harm--to my ears part of this strength is due to the vocals of Matt Heafy. Many will recognize him as the vocalist of Trivium, the band recognized by 13 year olds everywhere as the new kings of metal, and by seasoned metal fans as a bad joke with good lead guitar work. I had the unfortunate experience of seeing this band live, and it has forever tainted my ability to listen to Capharnaum without wincing at the memory of Heafy's excruciating clean vocals and irritating on stage banter. In Capharnaum, luckily for us, Heafy's vocals add a catchy dynamic to the hyper technical riffing and drumming. He employs a harsh, midranged hardcore styled yell which allows the lyrics to be easily distinguished, and gives the songs an accessibility that is rare in technical death metal...without sacrificing musicianship. This is a point of debate, as many fans hate the vocals and wish for a more typical death metal delivery. However, the open minded fan will find that the catchy vocal delivery is a nice counter balance to the jagged and unpredictable riffing.
Enough about the vocals. Musically, Fractured is phenomenal. The guitar work is fast and frantic, demanding the listener's full attention. Each riff flows seamlessly from the proceeding riff, yet the songwriting displays an exhilerating spontaneity. The drum work perfectly compliments every riff with insanely complex patterns that rarely seem to stay in one place. There are plenty of ferocious blast beats and tight double bass rhythms, but drummer Jordan Suecof also knows when to adopt a "less is more" philosophy and settle into groovy midpaced rhythms, perfect for getting your head banging away.
This isn't the fastest tech-death you've ever heard; Necrophagist and Psycroptic may be slightly more impressive from a speed or technicality viewpoint. That said, Capharnaum's Fractured is one of the only technical death metal albums I find myself coming back to time and time again. Capharnaum obviously possess an insight that many bands of their kind seem to lack: being fast and technical shouldn't be a competition, it should be a means of creating innovative and enjoyable music. I can't wait to hear what these guys do next.
This is a review I wrote for the album. It refers to this issue in particular.
I can definitely hear a similarity to Martyr, but i would hardly call Capharnaum a poor man's martyr. They've got a different approach, at least from the Martyr work that I've heard up till now.

FINALLY!
i dont understand whats so good about this band i respect them for a few tracks that are pretty musically advanced but there are heaps of bands that are just as or more tech than Capharnaum and who are more origional in their compositions. The vocals really dont do anything for me but props to people who can actually fully enjoy those vocals. Im not set out to offend anybody just my opinion...

Caphaurnum are really very dissimilar to Martyr in almost all ways, minus Mongrain's incredible guitar solos. They have a totally different approach to songwriting, seems pretty obvious to me.

if matt heafy's vocals were always like they are at around 2:25 of Fractured, then, it would be cool.

I am by no stretch a Trivium fan at all, but I like his vocals with Capharnaum. I think it makes it sound fresh and really pissed. I knew him as the dude from Capharnaum until Trivium hit it big. Capharnaum is just a project band anyway... who knows who will be singing on the next one?

I strongly disagree. I think the music is awesome... the vocals are cool in some parts, and some parts they have bad patterns, bad lyrics and are just too cheesy.

trivium is absolute fucking trash
the capharnaum vocals i actually dont mind, which for me is uncommon because i strongly oppose hardcore
that aside, the vocals from icon of malice are great to
i think if both styles were used to balance each other, kind of the way svencho does in aborted, it would make a killer combination

Yep, Jason on vocals please. And if he's going to have some thrash metal vocalist, it better be a real thrash metal vocalist like that Steve "Zuul" guy from No Return, or that one dude that used to be in Accuser.
I'm okay with chick vocalists sounding like chicks, but you know what? Male vocalists need to sound like dudes. Seriously. I'm a music listener, therefore I DO have a say. The band members themselves can choose to consider the opinions of their listeners or not.
I for one, vote Matt out.
So that vocalist is really Matt from Tivium? No wonder I felt like slapping him all this time.
