Not yet...although maybe I'll do some later this year.

If there are any particular requests, let me know so I can prioritize. But I haven't picked up a guitar in a while, and the next time I do I'd rather work on new tunes.

I talked with a couple of the KD people when I was apartment-hunting in Buffalo yesterday, and from what I can tell they dig the music but haven't made any formal decisions re: the show yet ... so far I'd say it's looking pretty good, though.

it's the slow bit from "Asleep On The Forest Floor". I'm not 100% on the tuning though, since there's a part in it that sounds like it's down in A.

I don't have Tabit, so I have no way to tell if those are accurate or not...

So far I haven't seen any tabs which didn't have some pretty big faults. Although Triple Clutcher's tab for the Forest Floor riff is dead-on (aside from the fact that I do full power chords, adding the octave on the G string).

Maybe over the winter, after all of this album writing and recording mayhem is over, I'll tab a song or two.

Or not...who knows.

what tuning are you using ?

Depends on the song...usually drop D.

what about pedals ? are you getting most of the distortion straight from your amp or are you running a couple different pedals ?

All of the distortion is straight from the amp...no pedal distortion or overdrive.

The distortion on this next recording shall be far superior to all previous GT guitar tones...

Dude! First distortion pedal I ever owned. But my respect has grown for them in recent years -- did you know Behold the Arctopus and Converge both use them? I think Kurt Ballou turns the distortion all the way down and uses it for overdrive, or at least he used to...but still...I'd have never guessed they'd be good for anything other than high school cover bands playing RATM covers (me 7 years ago) and black metal (Ulver used Metalzone via a direct signal -- no amp -- for Nattens Madrigal. But that's not exactly tone to brag about.)

what pickups do you have in your guitar now ? and i remember seeing a vedeo of you using a bc rich what do you think of those guitars ?

Hamilton
08-16-2007, 01:35 AM
Haha, really funny that you saw that...that show was the one time I've ever used a B.C. Rich live. The night before (Houston) I left my guitar at the venue (like a total idiot) and realized this about an hour before we had to play our Austin show. There wasn't time to go to Guitar Center, and my back-up guitar was coincidentally broken, so I had to borrow one from another band.

I've never liked those guitars -- as well as most other guitars which are meant for more "metal" playing like Ibanez, etc. Don't get me wrong, those companies make some nice guitars, but they're just not for me...I've always played Gibson Les Pauls...those are the only guitars that have ever felt right in my hands, for whatever reason.

I use EMG pickups in my Les Paul that I bring on tour...and Gibson stock pickups in another one I use for some recording stuff.

I know some distortion pedals do some cool shit when you turn the tone up high and keep the gain to a minimum, so it might be along those lines ... I think the sweepable mids could come into play as well. they're pretty rad when you need to be metal through a shitty practice amp though.

while your rig is being prodded at here, what kind of picks do you use?

Hamilton
08-17-2007, 01:58 AM
I honestly have no idea what picks I use...I rarely pick the same brand just because of circumstance; but I don't like the glossy/slippery kind. And I usually get 1.0mm or thereabouts. You?

I just discovered Dunlop Jazz XLs, which rule because they're the pointy, make-your-trem-picking-faster kind without being tiny or awkward. plus they're bright red, so they look badass and don't get lost as easily.

in the process of finding those I noticed that a surprising amount of people used picks which I'd never dream of getting any use out of, so I was curious if you had some 'secret weapon' up your sleeve.

that is so thick man. so with amps do you prefer solid state or tube ?

Hamilton
08-19-2007, 02:47 AM
Like most people I usually prefer tube, but I mostly just make my decisions based on the amp's sound and not what's inside it. For the last year of touring, I've played out of two amps at the same time -- a Peavey (tube) and a Sunn (solid state).

But I'm getting something new for our next album and subsequent tours...

Hey Hamilton,
probably the last thing you'll be concerned with at mo considering the albums about to drop. But Im very interesting in that tapping riff you've got going on near the end of Badlands, I've watched videos on the tube and even slowed the song down with a shitty program to figure out exactly what your doing, with minimal success: any chance of a hint?

I started when I was about 11 years old. I took some lessons, but not many...just enough to get me started. I'm mostly self-taught.

I plan on working a lot on new music this summer, but if I get super writers block I might take the time to tab a song or two...

Tabs are cool and all, don't get me wrong, but it's much more productive to spend time developing your own style instead of doing what other people are doing!
