Aboslutely man! Heretic was a solid album, but just had way too many fillers in it.

I have Domination, Blessed Are The Sick, and Covenant ... they are just plain creepy.

Yep, their first four albums are all amazing. After that, they're still good, but not like they were then. Though Gateways is my favorite album with Steve Tucker as vocalist.

They're all A-Grade DM albums excpet Heretic. That was filler through and through.

Yeah, I can see your point man. And the guitar sound was real hollow.

Let's hope with Evil D back in the fold, they'll(ie Trey) will write better material.

I posted there a lot last summer, but got bored due to the fact that it seems like the majority of the posters there are immature 14 year olds that just post moronic shit. I'm not ripping on younger people into metal because I know there are some with decorum.

Whoever said that, should get shot in the back of the head with a bee bee gun. Listen to the solos on Where The Slime Live, and pretty much every solo he's done. He does not just use random notes like King does.

Trey's soloing sounds a lot like Eddie Van Halen.
As for people sounding like King, I'd say the Hoffman bros from Deicide sounded like him in the old days.

Yeah, in the booklet of Domination, he dedicates the solo of Where The Slime Live to Eddie Van Halen.

You bet, MA is one of my fave DM bands! I have nothing new to add on this topic: I own all their stuff on original except "Abominations of Desolation." "Gateways" is my favourite Tucker album, but as you might have guessed, I never stop playing the ones with David Vincent. :hbang32en I suppose in terms of ranking, it more or less would be A, D, B, C, E, G, F, H.

And I'm thrilled to see that "DOMINATION" has been getting such positive revisits from fans in the last couple of years, this album rules. To me, MA had established their core classic otherworldly approach to DM by "Covenant." The D album explored further within that framework with magnificent songs. Producer Bill Kennedy (noted for working regularly with Ministry and Danzig) added what I think was an interesting, almost ambient (like Brian Eno producing old U2) production to a DM album. I thought this contributed to the vibe.

And yes, MORBID ANGEL RULES!!

Hey there Involuntary, I hope you're Rocking. At the moment I'm crashing with my folks (exploitation, love it!). I get decent net time at work, so I'll probably post in the morning. This access is free, so I don't normally due board duty on weekends ie. I don't have to pay for it. The net ain't cheap in SA man! :D

However know this: If I don't post for a while (it's the weekend, I have amnesia, I'm too drunk..) I SHALL RETURN! Bet on it. You and the others remind me that there are indeed brutal metal fans out there who are decent human beings with actual opinions and thoughts that make me proud to love metal. I'm surrounded here by juvenile fans of shit hardcore and metalcore who are the most unpleasant uninformed Nazis I've ever had the displeasure of turning my nose up at.

Despite an absence, I'll always be back, HaHa :beerchug: Stay cool dude!

Pleasure man. Fair enough on the lyrics, but I confess I love them! David is one of my favourite DM lyricists: his words inspire me to feel strong and confronational:

"Long gone are their filthy lies
I know they'll come again someday
Where the slime live
...And how the slime gets washed away HaHaHaHa!!"

Shit I really have to work... BUT! I am massively biased for MA, so I would say Hell Yes! Personally, you cannot go wrong with any Vincent Era album. Especially the first two, which were amazingly influential for DM. I'd strongly reccomend in this order:

ALTARS OF MADNESS
DOMINATION
BLESSED ARE THE SICK
COVENANT

Any of these and you're smiling, Enjoy! If you get into these and miss the easily infectious sound of this MA period, buy Zyklon's "Aeon" album. The kind of album I hope they make with David Back in the fold. Laters!

Absolutely, if anyone's got the Bonus Levels (heretic) cd, you can hear the solo from To The Victor the Spoils, (it's called Victor Lava) and it's very much a Van Halen inspired solo. It sounds so good on it's own, I'd say it's better than Eruption.

Vincent didn't write the lyrics actually man. It was Trey Azagthoth, something either he or Vincent mentioned in an interview once citing it as something of a reason for Vincent leaving, as it was proving increasingly difficult to fit such complex and relatively convoluted lyrics into the quite static linear nature of the music they were writing.

Gateways To Annihilation tends to get knocked quite a bit by some of the "tr00" among the 'fans', but I think it's quite good, if more on the slower side than the earlier MA had been.

Covenant was not very good...
your opinion, but you can't really deny that 'Rapture' is quite possibly THE most groove-laden song in death metal? :D

hmmm i'd prefer more of a return to the style of 'Domination' than aping Zyklon, who themselves no doubt have a large MA influence.

If you can, try and get hold of the tribute album that came out as you'll hear a rather good cover of 'Dominate' by Zyklon from back in 2000 :beerchug:

For sure. I'd love to see another album like Domination. But, from what people have said about Vincent live isn't good. I just hope he's good in the studio. I'd hate for MA to put out a shitty sounding album. That's like an oxymoron.

well he has been playing in a shit 'goff' nu-metal bullshit band for the last decade or so, so he obviously needs time to get back into the swing of it.

I found it funny though in the first pic of the reformed lineup it looked more like Trey & Commando with Burton C Bell not Davey Vincent!

Wassup dudes. Missed a lot of posts so here's a few batch points.

Jordan- As I said elsewhere, "Gateways To Annihilation" is the best Steve Tucker-era album, it has such a great imperial otherworldly atmosphere.

Surt- I'm not quibbling but are you sure about that?! I know that Trey definitely wrote all the lyrics for "Formulas," cementing his status as the band's sole songwriter. I'll check the credits at home on my original... I remember that some fans weren't too happy with the "Domination" lyrics but I thought they ruled. And yes, I have heard the Zyklon cover of "Dominate" and I think it's great.

Involuntary- I really like "World Ov Worms," but I haven't heard it in ages; "Aeon" is the one I listen to the most. If their futuristic blend of BM and DM is to your liking, check out the first album by Myrkskog... before they became a pure DM band. This was mindbending shit. At that point you could debate that they patented the sound more effectively than Zyklon.

Azathoth- From what I heard from a bud who caught MA in London, David now does a few lows here and there but mainly sings in a blackened mid-growl VERY reminiscent of his vocals on "Altars Of Madness," which doesn't sound bad at all to me. Of course, he was a growling God on the later albums. Hopefully his current vox will translate well on the new album.

Azathoth
03-22-2006, 03:24 AM
Hmm, maybe he's getting some bass back into his voice then. But it definitely sounded like midrange, almost screams when i saw them in Feb 05.

I think he peaked vocally on Covenant.

well it was either one of the big causes of Vincent leaving or of Ste Tucker leaving... I realised not long after I posted that that I might have gotten the circumstances mixed up.

Agreed. They were going way downhill. But Archetype kind of went back to what they used to sound like. I really don't like Transgression though.
yeah, i went back and listened to that again yesterday and while there's still some dubious songs on there that somewhat reek of 'Obsolete's flaws, there's also some pretty strong stuff on there too.
I didn't bother with 'Transgression' at all though to be honest as from what I read it's more heavy on the ambient synthy kind of stuff and less on the heavy metal side... kind of like how Obsolete would stand apart from SOANM I guess...

Tyler Durden
03-23-2006, 08:17 AM
I dig all the MA shit, especially Formulas... a lot of people bemoan that album because it doesn't have the Vince on vocals... but shit man - it just exhudes so much fucking power! There's always lines drawn in the sand when a new vocalist kicks in, but I usually like to give them a chance before having my mind made up for me by moronic closed-minded friends who base their opinions on whatever publication the're reading that pertains to... but DOES NOT feature Metal.

I initially thought Altars Of Madness was THE SHIT, but when I heard Blessed Are The Sick - it was all over... that album just lays down the fucking law! I'd say Blessed, Domination, & Formulas are my 3 faves, but the others are in no way inferior and I still dig them as well...

I'm sure whenever Dave originally left, it was the old musical differences excuse that was quoted at the time. I remember Trey mentioning that by the time Domination was released, Dave & himself were on 2 complete different lyrical paths. Beginning with the Altars era, most of the lyrics were already written by Trey & Mike by the time Dave joined the band - but between Blessed & Domination, Vincent had assumed the mantle of chief songwriter. I think by the time Domination was finished with, Trey wanted to take the band back more to their roots with the Sumerian Incantation Magick, Ancient Ones, Necronomicon type lyrics. It had pretty much reached breaking point in as much as MA was Trey's band, and he has a very distinct Path Of Possession that he wanted the band to go in & he didn't think Dave understood his intentions in that respect. I think it was maybe because Dave had really engraved himself as the main lyric writer & overall conceptualizer for the band (which was always overviewed & given the nod of approval by Trey), that whenever Trey wanted to make a contribution (to his own band), his style of writing was vastly different to Dave's concept of how the band was actually evolving, that Dave probably thought it would hurt the Morbid Angel image to go forward in reverse. The word 'image' is very important here, and the phrase, 'Style over Content'. I'm sure if you 'look' at what Dave has done throughout his years since leaving Morbid Angel & his ominous return - you can't deny that 'image' plays a very big part in his larger than life persona...

As a fan, all I can really say is - I don't mind Dave's Imperialistic Elitist approach to the lyric writing & I also equally dig Trey's Pazuzu-isms as well. It makes no difference to me what they sing about, I enjoy both styles. It's awesome to see Dave back in the band though. I was fortunate enough to see them in London last year & it just took me right back to the Blessed era. They truly delivered in abundance & it was like Dave had never been away - he was truly born to front that band...

Just got back from Morbid Angel last night at the Jaxx. Great show and great setlist. Still nothing after Domination. They opened with Rapture and about 10 seconds in I got hit in the face in the pit and was bleeding the whole show. Got a nice gash under my eyebrow. haha

Setlist(not in order except for opener and closer)

Rapture
Pain Divine
Dawn of the Angry
Dominate
Where the Slime Live
Blasphemy
Immortal Rites
Lord of all Fevers and Plague
Fall From Grace
Day of Suffering
Blood on my Hands
Chapel of Ghouls

ish...

to be fair, while it's undeniable that Vader are influenced by MA, they're nowhere near as carbon-copy as a lot of Polish bands are - such as Lost Soul, Immemorial, etc.

About the only exception to the "lets all copy Morbid Angel" rule for Polish bands, is the likes of Behemoth, Yattering, Decapitated (to a degree), and one or two others.

You might well enjoy listening to Hell-Born who are very much old-school death in a similar vein to Morbid Angel - although, IMO, not a direct rip-off.
