I think its about time for this place to have a thread like this, just like in the old forum.
O.K.!
So Watchtower is pretty sweet, right?
Well so is Origin, too!

I've also had to check out the two bands often mentioned, Canvas Solaris and Spiral Architect. But Atheist has pretty much kept me busy for the past 6 months. Next in my list is: Nile, Psycroptic and Bolt Thrower (Since I'm seeing them live, soon)

Let me recommend another GREAT BAND: MEKONG DELTA
The best album is "The Music of Eric Zahn". but it's all good....a little different album to album, but they are unique. There is no other band like them.
They're working on a new album, supposed to be A STEP UP IN THE FIELD OF TECHNICAL METAL. BREAKING NEW GROUND.
I think once you check them out, you will be amazed.
I am on NINS AND PEEDLES to hear the new one!!!!!!
YES! Canvas Solaris is from nearby - in Georgia, I just checked them out too. Very good!!!
Question for EPITAPH: How has Atheist kept you busy - are you referring the the bass tabs, bass playing, etc?? You must be incredibly ambitious!!

Bolt Thrower
Great band. Not technical at all but brutal in their simplicity. Their latest album (For Those Once Loyal) was maybe my favorite of 2005.

Sweet, I'm always in need of new bands to check out...
If you ever get a chance, check out Martyr from Canada... One of my all-time favorite bands. I dont know, maybe you guys have heard them already but there are few even where I live in Canada that even know who they are, so I'm assuming they're not well known in Europe, or anything.
Mekong Delta sounds interesting. I'll have to see if I can get my hands on some of their releases.

How bout make this a rule from now on... If you recommend a band, post a link to a)their official site, b)myspace or some kind of place where they have downloads/streaming files, or c)actual song itself. It usually slips my mind to search for them, or i just shrug it off because I'm lazy or something. But when the link's there, you just click right away..
www.ronjarzombek.com has some spastic Ink and I think Watchtower live clips.
Canvas link is in my signature. also, their myspace has some stuff from their INCREDIBLE new album, Penumbra Diffuse.
Martyr- http://www.martyr-canada.com/
Don't know any of those other bands and/or a link to their stuff.

Pichfork_Girl whats up? Anyway I just posted on the Gordian Knot thread a band called Theory in Practice. I just found out that the guitarist Peter Lake is now in Mekong Delta. Why have you not informed me of this? I want a copy this weekend brother.

I'm looking forward to the new Mekong Delta as well. Very unique sound, but they could have done with some more variation within songs. Theory In Practice was also very good, as were/are Spiral Architect. Canvas Solaris is undeniably good, but doesn't quite do it for me the way the others do - too laid back and too much doodling for my taste. I just got some stuff that was recommended to me, and I'll give that a spin to see if it's worth mentioning here.

Yeah, but I think they lack a bit of the aggression Forbidden had. And I prefer Russ Anderson's vocals to Warrel Dane's.

Yep, Jeff and (these days) Steve Smythe can shred with the best of them. Funny thing: I saw both the last Sanctuary and the first (official) Nevermore show in Seattle (lived there for 8 years). I've always liked them, even if they're more mainstream: the simply do it better than any other band, with excellent composing, arranging and musicians. Warrel has the best voice in metal, IMO - and it's gotten better now he's been forced to let go of the Jaegermeister. Forbidden committed a cardinal sin with Green, to me, and Nevermore's versatility made them more interesting to me. Come to think of it, Forbidden never released it's best material (Trapped demo) officially, but that's another matter.
Oops, almost forgot those names:
Linear Sphere is among them, along with Insidious Decrepancy (one man and his drum computer), Alarum (some more spins, it's interesting, but the singer is annoying), The Forsaken, Norther, the new Nile, Kalmah, and some more stuff I have to dig out of my car to remember :p

I forgot to mention The Burden of Existence. (the link is in my sig) They're still in the musical fetal stages, as they just have a few unfinished songs and no singer last time I checked. Chris Rushing on guitars and bass, Hunter Ginn (yes, from Canvas Solaris) on drums. Although I prefer the Canvas music over this, they're still pretty damn cool. Burying Your Dead is awesome. They're planning on having melodic vocals too. I'm pretty proud to know about this band, because they're the only band I like where I was around from the beginning. :D

Alarum is some great stuff aswell as Mastodon, but while Alarum plays jazzy and pretty melodical prog/tech metal, Mastodon does some real heavy stuff in a different way of prog/tech. And then ofcourse we have some good oldies; Cynic, Death, Pestilence, Spastic Ink. I suppose you´ve heard all or some of the mentioned bands, otherwise, check em all out!

They're still availble from Amazon: Energetic Disassembly was relatively recently re-released on Monster, and Control and Resistance hasn't gone out of print/stock yet. I'd think even a local Tower Records would be able to get a hold of them for you. I'm not sure about the availability of Spastic Ink's Ink Complete, though, but I'm sure Ron could help you out with that one. If worse comes to worst, I can send you copies.

Dude yeah, it's pretty hard to top Spastic Ink's "Ink Complete" for me.
The bands I'm playing in are heavily influenced by technical (yet well written) albums, metal or not. Our style is the death metal version of our best efforts to achieve extreme technically while preserving catchness and heaviness.
Atheist are legends of this.

Eh, I think the best musical categorization I've heard for !T.O.O.H.! is "quirky death/grind"; they were one of extreme metal's most innovative and rapidly progressing acts—all of their material is worth owning by whatever means necessary—but unfortunately, financial issues finally killed them off.
Regarding Watchtower, “Control and Resistance” was the first album with mastermind Ron Jarzombek on lead guitars, and naturally, it is amazingly more complex than the band’s already mind-bending 1985 debut. Jarzombek’s patented quirky melodies act as the dominant musical force while fellow rhythmic fiend, the legendary Doug Keyser, lays down his deedily-dooiest, and unfortunately, final performance as a bassist in a metal band. “Control and Resistance” marked the end of Watchtower’s short but highly influential career and confounded the minds of most casual metal fans from the mid-late 1980s.

Ron rules (my personal favorite guitarist), but don't forget half the songs on C&R were written by Doug and (often underestimated) Billy White. Structurally, they're not that different, but it was an improvement over ED, for sure. Actually, Doug is still my favorite bassist, as with Rick on drums - Tower wouldn't have been the same without him, either. Amazing stuff, and I'm still hoping Mathematics will be completed at some point, family men or not...

Thanks Marinator, I picked up Control and Resistance. I hear that I want Energtic Disassembly? Didnt see that at Tower and there isnt really a good record store in Atlanta. I love the music, freaking amazing but the vocals arent quite my style. Ron is probably one of the best guitarist I've heard. If you got something that would be cool. I can send you something that you may not have? I have a ton of shit. More on Brutal Death Metal but got plenty of other stuff too.

The vocals comment is a pretty general one: most people I've heard comment on Alan's voice on C&R weren't very happy. I'm no different, in that respect. PM me your snail mail details and I'll send you a copy of ED (which has Jason McMaster on vocals, the original singer who's also involved in what little activity remains within the realm of WatchTower, these days).

I wasn't trying to musically categorize them, but that's a good description. I think they are a mix of Cephalic Carnage, Cynic, and Voi Vod but still manage to retain great flow in their songs. Why do you say they're done? They signed with Earache/Elitist less than a year ago, released a cd very recently, and just started a Myspace page. Sounds like a lot of activity for a "finished" band.

Earache shut down their Elitist subsidiary several months ago, and as a result, !T.O.O.H.! got dropped from the label and disbanded shortly thereafter due to financial issues; now is the time to snap up their discography before their two already OOP albums “From Higher Will” and “Order and Punishment” become scarce and overpriced.

Willowtip records has Pod Vladou Bice (http://www.willowtip.com/store/product_detail.aspx?id=38) in stock for $10 shipped.
I can only wish you luck in getting either the English or Czech version of their first album; I got lucky and snagged my Czech copy by scouring a few well-known trading forums (in this instance, metal-archives.com) and finding a seller that was willing to ship the item to me all the way from the Czech Republic. Other than that, you might want to keep an eye on eBay.

As long as we are throwing in a little grindcore with Suffocation (one of my fave dm bands), I have been listening to Despised Icon (http://www.despisedicon.com/index2.htm) recently, out of Montreal. They played here in Atlanta with Morbid Angel, Krisiun, and Behemoth and I was impressed. I picked up a cd they recorded with Century Media and it is quite good. It is laced with a little grind and a little hard. Some songs have got a real nice groove to them.

I've never posted on this site before, but I've spent too much money on tech metal over the years not to put my two cents in. A few people have mentioned Coroner and Mekong Delta-- probably my two favorite bands ever. There's a band from Toms River, NJ called Divinity Destroyed. It's pretty difficult for me to describe their sound, for they have one of their own and really don't remind me of any other band. Like many other talented bands who have been stuck in their hometown for years, this is one that I think deserves to be touring the country and have their name get out there. Please, take the time to listen to at least one of their songs. I can't guarantee that you'll like it, but what can it hurt to find out?

Some bands I enjoy
Watchtower, Spastic ink(Ron Jarzombek's project), Demilich, Mekong Delta, Entrafis(a long lost Canadian techy death band)
And ofcourse my all time favourote prog thrash act Anacrusis, has anyone heard anything of the guys after the split up?
Mordred, they aren't exactly tech or prog but they are so unique I decided to mention them. Mordred played a mix of thrash metal and funk.

I've been listening to The Conductor's Departure quite a bit since I got the album last month. In fact, this along with the new Suffocation and Deicide are my favorites this year.
Btw, who here has listened to Stench of Redemption? The guitar work is superb with Owens (Cannibal Corpse) and Santolla (Iced Earth) Replacing the Hoffman Brothers.

Great technical prowess with this band. A Sceptic's Universe is a great album, and I just hope they get to making another album. Sean Malone actually played Chapman Stick on the album, which I thought was pretty cool.

I wouldn't call them "prog-metal", but I think a lot of Atheist fans would like the new !T.O.O.H.! album. Order and Punishment. Fucking brilliant!!!
The Obliteration of Humanity are one of my all time favrioute bands! they were such an amazing band, look around at your underground cd stores i managed to pick up Order and Punishment from one.

Scale the Summit is really melodic and technical, sort of fusion, sort of metal. Worth checking out for sure.

Ron Jarzombek's new project Blotted Science, with Alex Webster, and Charlie Zelany from Behold...The Arctopus sounds very promising. Check out Ron playing some excerpts on www.ronjarzombek.com/rjvideos.html
The album is called Machinations of Dementia.
Electro-Quarter Staff is an excellent Canadian instrumental metal band.

Some more brutal technical metal;
Cryptopsy
Visceral Bleeding (Absorbing the Disarray is nuts!!)
Spawn of Possession (The most technical metal out there)

The best album is "The Music of Eric Zahn". but it's all good....a little different album to album, but they are unique. There is no other band like them.
They're working on a new album, supposed to be A STEP UP IN THE FIELD OF TECHNICAL METAL. BREAKING NEW GROUND.

It's interesting that you are familiar with Liers in Wait - they're from here in ATL, but I don't meet a lot of people who remember them.
Do do you know Eric Sizemore ?

The Sense Apparatus is the only thing I've heard from Frantic Bleep. And it's good. Do you have mp3's of their demo, John Frank?

Thanks for the feedback so far...
Spooge was an extremely weird and talented band that blended WatchTower, Primus, Thought Industry, industrial metal, death metal, and all sorts of film clips (including a decent helping of porn) into their music. I am sure I am missing some other influences. Their Nice and Warm three song demo is a classic.
I will check the tracklisting of the Canvas Solaris demo and post it.
I don't know Eric Sizemore. I believe I became aware of Liers in Wait through my circle of metal friends.
I'd have to ask Ron about Phhhp.
I can post the Frantic Bleep Fluctuadmission demo. The Sense Apparatus was a disappointment to me. The 4 song demo is much more energetic and seems more complex.
I really like Sceptic's first two discs. They went downhill starting with their third release, although it has two or three good songs on it. Their fourth isn't complex at all.

I recently ran across this excellent progressive power (or thrash, who cares?) metal band named ADRAMELCH. Here's their website:
http://www.adramelch.com/
and I'd highly recommend to listen to these two songs off their first album:

I just picked up Direwolf album. Solo project by Mike Lerner of Behold... the Arctopus. Took him 7 years. He calls it 'technical space metal' sounds like Melancolia (layered solo BM (6 yrs)) mixed with Cynic (vocoder, etc).
You can pick up the CD from the B...TA merch table, they're on tour right now

Illogicist's new disc is fucking killer! I'll have to find the first one...
Also, my buddy Travis plays in this sweet tech/death band Terrestrial Sphere from NY- they just posted their demo and are a perfect mix of the more chugging rhythms of Gorguts and the jazzy parts of Atheist and Cynic. Cheggit out!
