My thoughts exactly. Even with teh Atheist vocals thing, I thought the same thing. I'd still like to hear another song before ordering it though, just in case.

I'm just curious, there are a lot of melodic death bands with "growlers" that are not "cookie monster" style...

Sure, all Gothen"bore" bands that I know of, for example. Or do you mean to imply there's a difference between "Cookie Monster growling" and other Cookie Monster vocals? In that case I'd have no idea...

Two of my favs if not my top vocalists are Dan Swano & Mikael Akerfeldt... they both growl like the devil and sing like angels... ie they can growl and sing clean vocals. I love the combination, an noone quite does it like they do.
There was a day when bands like Cannibal Corpse were fantastic too... Sadly I've gotten tired of blast beats, and unintelligible growling (altho when I interviewed Corpsegrinder a few years back he was the nicest guy... I hate to badmouth him...) I also have to admit I don't particularly care what the vocals are, as long as it goes along well with the music...
Musically I love Cynic, however the vocals annoy me... (check the band I posted above, Continuo Renacer, it's Cynic-ish WITHOUT vocals) this is the problem I have with a lot of prog-metal... the vocals... there's something about a guys singing like his nuts are crushed in a vice that I can't stand. Unfortunately prog-metal and that style of vocals seem to go hand-in-hand... (or should that be nuts-in-vice?)
Some of you will argue that growling ruins a lot of bands, obviously we all feel different about the music we love. Thankfully we have a choice to what music we like, and not everything is the same horrible crap the mainstream feeds us.

you big dutch bastard! you've used "bore" twice , and insulted two things i like!
this song sucks, it sounds like kelli meets alexi on vocals, and the rest sounds like finntroll meets dimmu borgir + sean malone
too gimmicky

It's true: I'm half Frisian and conceived before the marriage of my parents! :D
Nothing against early In Flames or even early CoB - I have all of that stuff and it's enjoyable, but it's gotten too repetitive, polished and there's no progression into new directions. I'm sure I'm a blase and elitist shit, but I like distinction and progression :p

Well I just checcked Necrophagist's myspace, and all 4 songs-"stabwound", "seven", "extreme unction", and "intestinal incubation"- had the cookie monster vocals im talking about. Pavor has them too (check those 2 clips I put up to hear them). I'm not sure if you were calling Akerfeldt a cookie monster or not, but I wouldn't. (The first Opeth song I heard was Credence, a looooong time ago, and I'm surprised I still like the song. I like the vocals and I was amazed the death metal singer and melodic singer were the same person.) These Scholomance vocals don't really qualify as CM, they're a bit mroe clear actually, and have that...quality to it. I wanna say it's 'saliva-ey' but that's not right. One great example is Deron Miller from Foreign Objects on the Universal Culture Shock album. Fuckin flawless vocals. Which guy from Cynic (Tony or Paul) do you not like? I actually liked Paul's voice on the RoadRunner demo. Do you listen to Canvas Solaris? ( www.canvassolaris.net ). Amazing prog. metal with some nice clean parts here and there. no vocals. They did in the early days though.
The keyboards did remind me a bit of CoB too, who I'm not into, but I don't really mind.

On a side note, if you like jazzy wierd stuff like Cynic, check out Continuo Renacer (Continuous Rebirth) http://www.continuorenacer.com/ they are a somewhat local band... you'll need to go to the Spanish version of the website to download the mp3... and sorry I can't provide a direct link the site is all Flash, and ONLY works in MSIE...
I have the full album, well worth the measely 10eur plus shipping that they're asking.
That fusion for suckers song is incredible. Can you buy it only from them?
