Just curious, because every song has a treasure chest full of riffs

It really depends. We've spent 2 months and we've spent 6 months on a song. Now a days we usually only take a couple months to write a song.

we used to practice alot less than we do now, but back then we could have spent upwards to 6 months getting a song where we wanted it to be with all of the subtle nuances, transitions, and harmonies exactly where they should be. personally, i play alot more guitar now than i used to and consequently write more material in shorter periods of time... like andrew said --- typically a couple months per song is ample at this point.
i find the more i play, the better i get at connecting parts together in my head and because i go back to the material on a more consistent basis, the riffs stay fresh and stimulating for me, allowing the songs to kind of write themselves naturally and fluidly. songwriting has always been a form of mental architecture for me. i never really go to the guitar unless i have an idea circulating in my head first. i'm getting to the point where i can finally play alot of what i hear in my head, so in that regard i'm really looking forward to the next album and writing it in a far shorter period of time than we've taken with the first one.
