Review:

Upon hearing of the reemergence of pioneering Atheist drummer Steve Flynn, my curiousity was piqued immediately. I'd always appreciated his slippery brilliance behind the kit, forever giving the impression of struggling not to become caught in the tornado of bizarre rhythmic patterns he himself was creating. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that thirteen years between major recordings and immersion within the materialistic modern-day workplace had not dulled his creativity. In fact, his refreshingly brazen yet occultish approach to rhythmic structuralization is very reminiscent of his previous output, a fact which initially inspired hope. Further, Gnostic is composed of talented players. Former Atheist vocalist Kelly Shaefer produced the album. A concern nags silently: can this band escape the shadow of its predecessor? source (http://www.anus.com/metal/about/reviews)

Here is a much better review of Gnostic that I found.

http://www.seaoftranquility.org/reviews.php?op=showcontent&id=3157

Flynn is playing better and way faster in this stuff than he did in Atheist!

I'm not saying anything against his playing in Atheist by any stretch of the imagination. UP has long been one of my all time favorite albums. You can just tell how much he has progressed.

I wouldnt say faster, the Atheist stuff is pretty smoking. Its pretty hard to keep up with some of it. All of the reviews are great, I'm glad people have an opinion of the stuff. Its all good feedback and it makes us work harder.

The timing might be as fast. I'm talking strictly about his playing. His fills are faster, and his double kicks are nearly twice as fast as they were in Atheist. But yes Atheist was very quick.

Just thought I'd ask this here instead of PMing you, Corpse, but can we order the demo already? The order form isn't up on the site yet, is it? I'd love to get my hands on it and give it a couple of good spins before judging the (excellent) material by the MP3's only.

On a side note: you guys aware of this other band called Gnostic, who just released Hatewar 666 on Infernus Rex? Not that they sound anywhere near as good, with their simple and sloppy black metal, but the names might be confusing...

Kind of inevitable that there'd be another band with the same name... that seems to be the case for just about any single word named band out there, unless you invented the word of course, but even then there seems to be a lot of overlap.

I should have my review done soon... I've been slacking... (actually been really busy, and not totally satisfied with my writing)

It's just that I want people to try as hard as they can to avoid saying things like.... "Well, it's no Unquestionable Presence....therfore it's just not very good" That's unfair..... It's not U.P....nothing ever will be Those 8 songs were written over a 2-year period....almost 18 years ago....with completely different musicians...... Gnostic is just different and new.... And, I want people to like or dislike it by itself not as an extension of Atheist.
this is understandable...

Mind you, this isn't directed at you WhoCares....... just a general statement about the difficulty in critiquing and journalism in general....whether it's Mark Hamill who could never be anything BUT Luke Skywalker in people's minds....or a TV actor, or other artists known for a big accomplishment. Some are able to transcend their early success and transform.....Madonna has to be one of the best examples in music....though.... I'm no Madonna fan....but you get my drift. I may never be able to be part of an extreme/prog/metal band without it being compared to Atheist.....but Gnostic understands that that's part of the territory and we're cool with that.....
I've seen Mark Hamill's other (pre-star wars) work... and after his car accident he didn't have such a pretty face (which is why you only see him from far/one side in ROTJ) but yes, I get your point.
In fact, most of the reviews for Gnostic have been quite positive so far...with a few folks, again inevitably, saying..."it's not Atheist, but I'll keep an eye on them to see how they develop..." If that's the worst we can get as a review, I think we're in pretty good shape as a band.
Have you been snooping in my documents? that's almost what I have written :emot-LOL:

^ That's what I'm talking about!

As for the demo, is there an option with you guys to "purchase" it? What I heard on the website was killer (Steve - you have mail) but we all know the importance of fans putting their money where their mouth is. Bills don't pay themselves!

We are trying our best to keep it that way. We may, if it starts to get costly ask for overseas shipping charges. I dont see that happening for US requests. But yes the demos are available without cost and were in the process of having more duplicated. We want as many people to have a demo as possible. We do appreciate the offer for payment but none of the duplications where done professionally. The next demo is probably going to be a different matter. Enjoy!

I know this is not a Gnostic Forum and apologies to Kelly and the rest of you but I wanted to post this. We are scheduling our studio time back at Ledbelly in mid June to record our next demo. We'll keep you posted on the progress, and if any of you have a myspace account check our myspace web page at http://www.myspace.com/gnosticmusic

Thanks a lot Cod!!! I know everybody appreciates it. I'll pass your words along to the rest of the band. We'll put up some CD-quality downloads on the Gnostic website soon. The MySpace stuff just doesn't allow you to hear everything how it should be heard....(that being mainly the drums and bass as Sonny and his counterpart had to be the loudest fucking instruments on the recording this time.... ) A small penis will do that..... ;)

BUT, obviously, you've not had trouble hearing the vocals.... ;) Kevin left his spleen and one lung in the recording booth....

Thanks again man!!! we really appreciate it.

Thanks Opeth223, we are working on it but sort of busy with Atheist at the moment. We'll have some more time to work on new material and refine our sound after this is all done. We have a ton of stuff in store so I hope you guys keep us in mind. Thanks again for all the support.

HOLY STROMBOLI!

I've been a slack-ass in checking those new tunes out.

I simply cannot believe how GOOD this stuff is! I really don't know what to say!!! Major applause to Gnostic. You guys have really outdone yourselves this time. Just don't paint yourself into a corner. :D

Kevin is definetly one of my favorite vocalists out there. That boy needs to have a doctor check him out after every practice. Sounds like he's gonna blow a gasket!
