View Full Version : Your favourite GRINDCORE?!

In Vermis Veritas

Just gotta ask, who are your favourite artists from this violent speedy variant of extreme metal? Please list politically charged grind, gore grind, porn grind etc. Here are my favourite grindcore bands, as well as some of their records that I constantly play:

NAPALM DEATH "Scum," "Order of the Leech"
NASUM "Inhale/Exhale"
ROTTEN SOUND "MurderWorks"
PIG DESTROYER "Terrifyer"
TERRORIZER "World Downfall" (Don't do a follow-up!)
DEFECATION "Purity Dilution"

Ahh, the mere thought of these records makes me grin, want to drink, topple oppresive governments and fight for human rights! Or in the case of PD, stalk an ex! :D

If you're a fan, share the grind merchants that crush your brain.

Thanks dudes: some bands I've yet to check out on that list I'm gonna get on it.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but I love "Scum!" ;) It's very primitive and rough, but blunt and effective... and one of the main platforms for all extreme metal to come. If you want to get a better, slightly more crushing airings of "Scum" and "FETO" era songs with Lee completely apeshit, check out their "Peel Sessions" disc... very cool!
For their early 90's period I really recommend "Harmony Corruption" (but "Utopia Banished" is underrated) These guys slightly lost me with their late 90's Machine Head/Fear Factory groove experimentation, but they regained the impetus on the first "Leaders Not Followers" EP. "Enemy of the Music Business" is one of my favourite discs!

Rompeprop actually surprised me last night with how much I enjoyed their set.

Considering beforehand i'd only heard a few tracks and hadn't really been overwhelmed by them, coupled with the "i made this out of magazine cuttings" style 'art'work... i wasn't really arsed about them at all.
They put on a good show though so I have to give them kudos for that, even if one of them did look like a used tampon.

and their last album, i heard the track insane (or something along those lines), the vocals are horrible and the song too slow for my liking.

Obituary aren't even vaguely grindcore. Anyone that calls them such is just plain daft.

I know Napalm Death went from a very grind sound to a more mainstream DM sound, but Obituary - much like Cannibal Corpse - have been peddling pretty much the same stuff since their inception, just to less of a monotonous output as CC.

In Vermis Veritas
03-02-2006, 03:52 AM
Yeah Obituary are far from grind. To me like Possessed and then the more advanced output of Death (RIP), you have to acknowledge that Obituary laid the foundation for what would become death metal... not least for the more extreme vocal approach.
And yes, they were/are never super fast. From a dirge they might at most, hit a moderate thrash speed BUT when they were on, they were fucking heavy. And pre-Roadrunner sellout/nu-metal/cheap-breakdown-hardcore, Obituary laid down a tasty groove, and it was sweet.

My personal fave would have to be what was quite controversial back in 94, but it was one of the coolest things I heard when I was in high school, back when all was Candlebox, Collective Soul and Metallica STILL peddling the Black album: "WORLD DEMISE." This is one of my formative extreme metal cds, so I'll never deny it's importance, kinda like I'll never shun Priest and Maiden (I never have or will give a flying fuck about Black Sabbath minus Dio. No offense but = Bollox for Ozzfest pups who think they're making a "metal" connection)
The album got a bit of flack for its occasional use of synths and samples but they don't dominate proceedings and lend a great atmosphere to the album. I still endorse the title track, "Don't Care," "Redefine," "Solid State" etc. \m/
My one friend says that he if he ever sees Obituary live, he'll have to start smoking weed again to deal with the slow pace! :emot-LOL: I agree but it's good stuff... check it out.

Now back on thread: I've been rotating Anal Cunt's "Top 40 Hits" my fave record by these noisy grinders. Never has near incompetence sounded so thrilling. Would it have killed them to have actually produced the record?! I always find Seth Putnam's desire to offend absolutely everyone admirable. I have heard from a reliable metal fundi friend that on some side projects... let's just say his pig-ignorant, right wing, Hitler-loving persona goes way too far. If this isn't the case, fine.
If this is true, not to sound preachy, but I wouldn't cry if he self-inflicted brain damage the next time he OD'd. If anyone knows if this is true or spicy, let me know.

I'm a huge Grindcore fan. The whole hardcore punk, free jazz, grind, noise stuff.. i fucking love it. I could list a shitload of bands that i love but instead i'll just mention my favourite band:

NASUM - all their fucking releases, rule the earlier works like Industrislaven, Grindwork and all that plus the amazing Inhale-Exhale, Human 2.0, Helvete and Shift but for me "Helvete" .. this is like the Sepultura of Grindcore. It has one-two minutes masterpieces..not just cool, harsh blasts of grind-noise but cool harsh blasts of grind-noise that are musical masterpieces too.

Sometimes i think i have more in common with Grind than with Metal [i mean, that's another discussion, but in my opinon Grindcore is not really Metal, Grindcore is today's Punk]

i'll post more bands later.. because i don't have time right now.. I guess i could write a fucking book about the grind/hardcore punk bands that i like and why i like them :) :) :)

grind while musically extreme as most DM, thematically connects with the original ethos of Punk(RIP), before it became synonomous with whining and dudes with chick-fringe haircuts.
Tell that to the remaining members of Nasum (RIP Miesko), Regurgitate, etc...
:P

Lately I've been really getting into the likes of Mincing Fury And Guttural Clamour Of Queer Decay, and Rompeprop (the latter surprising me as I'd never been bothered about looking into them before i was due to see them live and enjoyed myself).

think about it... you said that grind bands connect more with the ideologies (ergo subject matter) of the punk bands - ie anarchist/ anti-capitalist etc - whereas there's quite a few grind bands out there that have all kinds of things from gore to sex for their subject matter. I did make a bit of a mistake with Nasum as they do occasionally dip in politics but they also make social things just as much a subject matter...

punk/hardcore bands tend to take the anarchic anti-capitalist spiel to 110% in both their cover art and their subject matter, which is how punk/hardcore is so easily definable from other genres.

Regurgitate for example, while it's undeniable the hardcore influence on them, "sing" about various different gorey kind of things - spawning song titles like 'Complete Rectal Prolapse', 'Parade Of The Decapitated Midgets' and 'Vulva Fermentation'... etc.

I'm also a big fan of the Crust genre, that rocking hybrid of Motorhead-Discharge-Napalm Death... excellent. I really like Disfear (all the best to Uffe, I hope he is really happy in his new band!) but at a push my fave crust album is "Gra Varld/Svart Tankar" by Swedish legends Skitsystem! I really wanna hear the new one as soon as possible.
If you haven't already checked it out, you have got to hear the debut album "Retroactive Abortion" by VENOMOUS CONCEPT, comprised of Kevin Sharp (Brutal Truth), King Buzzo (Melvins, Fantomas) and Shane Embury and Danny Herrera (Napalm Death). Fans of hugely enjoyable and violent old school crust/punk/grind, apply here! I hope it's not too long before we hear from these guys again!

Two-Finger "Outlaw Punk!!!" (Their self-styled genre... I like it!)

Fuck Yeah brother!! I love crust stuff too. I'm a huge Venomous Concept fan not only because i'm a fan of Kevin Sharp and all the guys in the band and all their other bands (Brutal Truth, Fantomas, Napalm, Melvins..etc) but also because the "Retroactive Abortion" absolutely brings back the fucking whole hardcore Discharge vibe and then some. Also Skitsystem and Disfear kick major ass even if only for having one of my favourite vocalists ever Thomas Lindberg doing the vocals on some albums.

Johnny- Yep, Indeed. Like any genre when done right, Crust kills! Disfear and Skitsystem are amazing musically, but it always helps to have Tompa do vocals (he's also one of my faves!) He's always excellent, but to me he sounds even more nuts and rabid when screaming and growling in his native Swedish! :emot-eek:

Johnny-Skinless

Yeah definitely. I could listen to pissed off hardcore punk and grindcore with those swedish vocals for hours. Like the Nasum songs, i mean ..Fullmatad, Nar Dagarna, Den Svarta Fanan.. how fucking cool does these ones sound :) First time i heard Mieszko screaming his lungs out in swedish i thought that shit was unreal!! Or stuff by Uncurbed, Skitsystem, Krigshot..Listening to Tompa's screaming on "Enkel Resa till Rännstenen" cd makes wanna punch the goverment in the fucking face.

In Vermis Veritas
04-04-2006, 04:45 AM
Right on dude! "Fullmatad" is definitely Bonkers.
All though I heard all the albums a while back, the Nasum albums I currently own on original are "Inhale/Exhale" and "Shift." I love these records. When I book over to London, I'm wanting to pick up more muzak- I'll eventually get 'em all, but can you please give me your lowdown on "Human 2.0" and "Helvete," the inbetween albums with Jesper on bass. How do they compare to the other two? Which one would you reccomend getting first etc.

My bud in the UK had the honour of seeing Finnish freaks Rotten Sound grinding minds live (there are many awesome bands out there, but with Nasum gone but never forgotten, these guys are the next-in-line Napalm Death heirs). They were supported by Swedish grindfreaks Sayyadina, which features bassist Jon (fucking awesome!) from Nasum... I hear they are very nuts and very cool, quite off the wall. Apparently they have mastered that Swedish art of injecting a touch of catchy rock n roll/old school punk into the proceedings. Check out their album "Fear Gave Us Wings."

And the big news: drum god Anders Jakobsen is crushing again with a new band- COLDWORKER!!! The other members are guitarist and vocalist Anders B. (Ruin), guitarist Andre Alvinzi (Carnal Grief) and bassist Oskar Palsson (Relentless). There own site is under development but you can hear the instrumental demos at the official Nasum site... Very Promising! While there is definitely grind in there, Anders has said the band is moving further out from the groundwork laid by Nasum; there will be more of a focus on what drives the darker side of human nature. It seems a brutal Swedish DeathGrind mix is there order of the day.

I cannot wait to hear the finished product. And they must tour with Cryptopsy like Nasum did to Japan in 2001! Which Coldworker must of course do, but go via London/Europe so I can see 'em both, HeHe!

Johnny-Skinless
04-04-2006, 08:37 AM
Ok First things first:

"Human 2.0" is even faster and more angry than "Inhale-Exhale". It's all a blur of smoking ultra heavy distorted riffs, pure fucking pissed off vocals, everything is played lightning fast tempos, truly redefining the concept of "grind". This is true fucking Grindcore. Of course there are songs and moments with slower tempos but they are totally full-on crushing brutality. It also has an atmosphere which reminds me of industrial pollution or something. There are also some hints of melody arising through the explosive violence of the cd like the solo from "Shadows" (which will make you cream your pants). Overall the cd has very very fast dirty, distorded, blurry and bone-crushing heavy sound. "Scum" by Napalm Death barely touches this one.

Johnny-Skinless
04-04-2006, 08:48 AM
"Helvete" - This is the all time grindcore masterpiece because of the outstanding musicianship. Each and every song is a standout with memorable riffs, drumming and vocal patterns. I want you to keep in mind one thing, one important fucking thing. When i mention stuff like amazing musicianship and all that stuff you may be thinking Nasum kind off "evolved" from grindcore writing longer, slower songs or some shit. Thats' NOT the fucking case. This is all ultra short, hyper fast type of pure grindcore. 4 or 5 out of 22 songs are longer than 2 minutes, with the longest song being like 2:35. This is what amazes me, the first time i heard it i was speechless. How can you cram so much amazing fucking music and perfect stand-out original songrwriting into 1-1:30 minutes of pure grind noise is beyond me. Overall it's even more agressive than "Inhale" or "Human 2.0" especially because it pretty much lacks in slower tracks.

I strongly suggest that you buy "Human 2.0" first and then "Helvete".

As for Rotten Sound. I fucking love those crazy guys. They carry on what Mieszko Talarczyk and Nasum started. "Exit" by Rotten Sound is one of the most vicious and brutal grindcore releases ever produced by the man himself. I also wanna check out "murderworks" some time. True abrasive grindcore mieszko style :) \m/ \m/. Sayyadina rules too. And yes, Hail Fuking Anders Jakobsen! Can't wait for his stuff.

Hey Johnny. Thanks so much for the insight into the Nasum albums... much appreciated, man!! :beerchug: Your love of the band and quality grind shine through.
Don't worry, I do know what you mean when you say a grind band has "evolved." Since day 1, Nasum astounded me by what great songwriters they are: It's amazing that most of their songs are blistering Grinds that often clock in under a minute... yet the songs are fucking heavy, catchy and have fantastic dynamics and MEMORABILITY. For this particular genre, this can often be a challenge.

I look forward to getting these records. I'm also crying in my office as I didn't visit my bud in London in time for the Rotten Sound/ Sayyadina gig! :emot-fail Hopefully something will turn up when I jam over there in September.

Thanks again for everything bro, chat soon!!

As a fan of all things Finnish, I wonder when we're gonna see a tour with Rotten Sound and Sonata Arctica...? :D

^ You put it a very good way, when I first heard them something clicked the music felt right. You know that feeling like when you hear a band you really like for the first time that spinal chill thats what I got and sometimes still get when I listen to !T.O.O.H.!

I love the vocalists scream he sounds like an over-caffienated psycho killer fuck yes!

New here but yeah, you've all listed some awesome bands! But my personal favourite is Nasum. So simple yet so powerfull. And the lyrics are so true! I realte a lot with them wich is why i love them so much... Although, can't deny the power of Napalm Death!! Agoraphobic Nosebleed are also extreme. They make you want to listen to their songs over and over again. And so many others but my favourite is Nasum... (Prosthetic Cunt is soething to laugh your ass at.. THEY RULE!)

Yeah dude, I 'm also into grind lateley. I was more into grind then I am now, but things are changing
But there aren't that many good releases now, especially in the goregrind scene. Have you heard the new General Surgery? Like half the album has older songs rerecorded, but the new songs kick ass. A must have.

Heheh, glad to hear. I personally can't go too long without grindcore.

Re. General Surgery: Unfortunately not... yet. I actually still have to hear the Sayyadina album (Jon on guitar, ex-Nasum). When I start buying originals again, I'll probably catch up on grind/crust; I've bought so much decent DM recently that buying any more will burn me out.

Currently, am spinning non-stop:
PIG DESTROYER - Prowler In The Yard
SKITSYSTEM - Gra Varld
